To each his own, I suppose

Everyone has their price point. Unfortunately the whole subsidized phone system is ridiculous. People think a $49 dollar phone must not have cost much more to produce, which is not accurate. We should all be able to choose our own handset and purchase service from a provider we want to do business with.

If you want a portable device with Wi-Fi and no data plan.

Have you considered a Sony PSP or Nintendo DSi? Just buy a regular cell phone and use the other device for Wi-Fi. (I think the Nintendo DSi will have a web browser.) Does the iPod Touch have Wi-Fi?

Yes, the touch has wifi

You can even install fring, sign up for a VoIP service such as Voipbuster, etc., sign up for an IPKALL # to make/receive calls on the iTouch. There are some helpful videos on how to do this @ youtube.com

So to clarify for me....

Is there anyway I can buy a Samsung Omnia without being forced into a data plan from Verizon? Would I have to buy an unlocked version or something?

I wanted to get a Omnia with the $39 nationwide plan + $15 text bundle. The $30 dollar data plan pushes me over what I am willing to pay. The Omnia has wi-fi, so if I need to access something online I can do so via Wi-fi.

dancing around the maypole again...

To sum it up, I'm not aware of Verizon selling PDA or smartphones w/o the data plan at least initially. You would have to call them up to see when you could (legally) cancel the data feature on your account. 'Unlocked' only applies to GSM/UMTS handsets (ATT or T-Mobile), not phones with CDMA/EVDO service (Sprint/Verizon/Alltel).

Pay as you Go plans?

by jtc324 - 5/18/09 4:22 AM In reply to: dancing around the maypole again... by Pepe7

Will Smartphone or Wifi enabled phones work with pay as you go from T-Mobile. I have a pay as you go account for my niece as well as a phone with a monthly plan...if i buy her a wifi phone or smartphone can she access the internet with it?

Post 37 of 54

Yes, yes and yes

by Pepe7 - 6/12/09 2:08 PM In reply to: Pay as you Go plans? by jtc324

Just call them up for the dirty details regarding data plan costs on top of the plan your niece has now.. The phone you bring in must have the correct frequency bands, especially UMTS 1700 if you want 3G on T-Mo. Otherwise she'll be limited to wifi or their EDGE network.

Scammed????

by ciscoborb - 7/3/09 3:05 PM In reply to: Annoying Verizon smart phone data plans by jdemory6

I have a Verizon family share plan, 5 phones, with unlimited texting. Recently two of the phones were up for free upgrades. I ordered two Verizon XV6900 phones for my kids. I have the phones set up for phone and texting use only with internet acces blocked. I don't need or want them for internet access, etc. I purchased them and then noticed by bill was higher. I checked to see what was going on and noticed the two new phones wer incurring data charges. I called Verizon and was told that the phones incur data charges when sending and receiveing picture or video texting and that I am supposed to have a data plan. I told them that when I purchased the phones I was not advised of this. After a long battle with them the best they could do was to block intenet access which does not allow either of these phones to send or receive videos or pics. I can't wait until my contract expires. Any suggestions as to which other company to go with????

Choose...

...the company that gives you the coverage and features you need for the lowest price. It requires a little due diligence on your part.

Thank you captain obvious.

Wow Pedro Pepe, your response is so helpful. Thanks for posting. We are all so grateful for your insight. Muchas gracias.

Now here's a real suggestion:

I have found a company called Page Plus that provides exactly what I need. They use the verizon network-- so great coverage. You can activate any old verizon phone you have(pda's included)-- no stipulations about required data plans. They have a variety of plans to choose from. And the best part-- no retarded 2 year contract!

Hope this helps someone. If not, well I tried.

And mentioning a prepaid service helps this person how exactly? (ROTFL)

WOW! You got them to put the internet block on? That's awesome! How did you do it? That's exactly what I need. So it is possible if you complain enough. ???

Has anyone tried signing up with Verizon for a regular non-data plan with a non-pda/smart phone, and then later asking them to switch your service to a different phone(pda/smart that you bought from somewhere else) with an excuse like your other one broke or something? Just give them the ESN of the new pda phone without telling them what it is. You may even be able to do an ESN swap online.

started with a juke

by Inkleined1 - 10/23/09 6:51 PM In reply to: Congratulations by fsb2cool2care

I renewed my contract 3 months ago. The salesman said I could not buy the omni without a data plan. I carefully quizzed him about getting a omni activated later because all I want is wifi. He did not tell me I would not be able to activate the phone without a data plan. I found out today when I took my new I910 fresh from ebay to be activated. It just wont work Ive tried Ive threatened. Now pride will win not Verizon. They wont get my money any more but I want get their service either snarf snarf

Do the research

by Pepe7 - 10/24/09 7:21 PM In reply to: started with a juke by Inkleined1

It's risky to make assumptions w/o first checking at a more specialized site such as Howardforums.com. None of the carriers will let an official upgrade to a smartphone slide w/o adding the data plan. I have not doubts my own loophole will go away by next year ;(.

assumptions are when your guessing

by Inkleined1 - 10/25/09 4:16 AM In reply to: Do the research by Pepe7

I went by what I was told thats not assuming thats listening to a dumbass I should have done more research. Any salesman who wants more money should be motivated to upsale not misinform the customer. Verizon store is where i went wrong, by the way pepewhatever you assuming when you read post. Replys are only necessary when you have a real tidbit of information. My advice to all who are not know it alls dont trust what some salesman tells you.
