Hi all,
It seems that my pc got infected with either a virus or malware that is pretty persistant and malicious.
I had a tech look at my pc and he ended up formatting my entire pc.
when I received my pc back, I noticed that I still was having problems. True they were tiny but I have been on a PC long enough to know that it was not working like a "freshly-formatted" PC
One of the symptoms was I could not access Internet Options tools in IE. I received the error that it was not available due to restrictions (or something like that)
I could not access windows update, and Flash would not work (no sound)
I turned off Windows Restore, and ran malwarebytes and it got rid of a trojan (or so it says), Ran AVG andeverything came up clean and everything was working as it should.
I turned ON windows restore, and all the problems suddenly re-appeared! So I had to turn it off again and re-run malwarebytes and avg, which cam up with the SAME errors again.
now how do I get rid of this????
I have a suspicion it is somewhere in my _restore file since the error only appears when I turn Widnows Restore ON.
I am at the end of my rope here, any ideas????
I got HJT if a log is needed
Hi,
What is your operating system, XP? I would simply re-install from scratch, use your original installation disks. As for taking it to a pc shop to simply format well a lot will simply rip you off! We all have had to re-install windows. A clean option is the only way i'm afraid, then YOU know it's totally clean! If after all of that your still having bother well i would be starting to think about changing the hard drive then maybe the motherboard! Of course the golden rule is back up yor data, oh and one final tip, format ALL of the usb sticks you got lying around, maybe a bug has crept in there?
If you hadn't, when you turn off restore feature, you reboot afterwords. Then try to use the system and run the AV pgms. etc., to clean it. Once done and clean, then turn on the restore feature. if the problem returns, then maybe you need a more aggressive action. If the trojan is active, find the name of it, then google away. A more effective AV tool that attacks such a trojan can be found. Most AV makers provide removal tools to better clean a system. If you have trojan-XYZ, Norton support website can provide trojan-XYZ removal tool. Run it and retest all over again. If the problem still persists then in some way the malware has access. Usually, in most case a true clean reformat and install of the OS will do. In this regard, once the OS is reloaded and all drivers and the whole 9-yards, be sure you don't use some old data disks to return data back to the system. Use the AV pgms. to test those if on CDs, or any other storage means, directly beforehand. The other poster offered you check your flash drives, is a good point. You should also post in the "spyware, virues, & security" forum where more users provide answers.

I can't believe I forgot to mention
yes I am running Win XP Pro
the darn thing was formatted with my OEM disc which is why this is blowing my mind. (this is a month old Lenovo, which came with vista home loaded)
I do know that the store ripped me off. (they promised they could fix it but did not mention that the "fix" was a simple format) I could have done that myself.
I will check in the other forum. (didn't know that was around thanks for the pointer)
