processor problem

by digiplaya2005 - 2/12/09 9:55 AM In reply to: Re: 11/05/04 Computer turns on by itself by mmjones

I'm going on a limb here, but the fact that mmjone's computer shuts off sounds like a nasty processor defect or motherboard defect to me. Typically Windows is cryptic and doesn't report everything in the detail that I want either.

Check with your computer manufacturer or the people you bought it from and see if you can get either a refund, repair or replacement.

Did that help?

Another problem could be, if you have a power outage your computer could be booting up even if it is turned off. This is because your computer is set to turn its self on in the event the power goes out. This problem can also be easly fixed. If this is the problem e-male me and I will give you step by step how to fix this problem. stevenpresley@aol.com

Re: 11/05/04 Computer turns on by itself

by jgharris - 11/5/04 11:01 PM In reply to: 11/05/04 Computer turns on by itself by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have the opposite problem discussed here. When I purchased my Gateway 700X PC it would automatically shut off when I would exit Win XP. However, for the past several weeks I have to manually shut down the system when I can audible hear a spin down of the hard disk. This is the only way to get the system to shut down. Is this also a bios problem? If so,, what can I do to return to the automatic shut down process that came with the PC when purchased?.

Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to your response.

I had an issue with my new PC. It would awaken from hibernate mode every morning. Since I am also running XP Pro with the Media Center Edition, I found that the TV Guide was turning my machine on to download the updates. I fixed it by setting it to manual updates.

I hope that helps.

Jim H... how about some more input?

by ThomasL - 11/7/04 2:45 AM In reply to: 11/05/04 Computer turns on by itself by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Jim,
As you can see there are quite a few things that could contribute to your issue.. Although i have yet to see a machine new enough to carry Windows XP actually run out of batter life (unless you upgraded, and that may contribute to the other issue as well).

And yes, shorting out is another issue. If your main power to the motherboard, for example, is somehow pinched or attached to the chasis, that too could be an issue. Although that usually causes a shut down and reboot with possible failure on return or failure to start after reboot. Shorting and static electricity do a lot of weird things to computers.

I recommend most people who set their BIOS to not allow it to be awakened by ANY device (unless you have an administrator who demands it).

I also don't recommend using the hibernation or sleep feature to most users... I've just seen too many problems with it, to out weigh the benefits for a standard home user. If you want to shut down your computer, just shut it down. If you have programs installed that will bring a computer out of hibernation or sleep, I would put a stop to that. Let it update when you decide to get on the computer.

But honestly, some more feed back would eliminate all this speculation. I give the best possible answer given the info you provide. Beyond that, please post to this column so we can get some sleep :).

Thanks,
ThomasL

My problem may not be the same cause as the other's.
I am running Windows Xp and the problem started when I would try to start my computer.Nothing would happen until about three minutes and then would start Boot up would boot up so far and then shut down after about three minute would try to boot up again .This would go as long as I would allow it to try and start.Replaced power supply and have not had any more problems.

This has happened to me on my grandchildren's, CTX computer, running Win98. It repeatedly went on and off; they replaced the motherboard and it was okay for a while, it did it again, then they replaced the power supply. It has only done this 2 times since. Does this sound like a wake on lan problem or possibly something else?

I'm running XPPro on mine and networked to theirs.

Thanks

I have a similar problem

by Josh Martin - 1/13/05 7:39 AM In reply to: 11/05/04 Computer turns on by itself by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Just build a new computer.
ASUS P5AD2-P mobo
P4 560
1 gig Corsair DDR2-5400
2 Maxtor HDs (non-RAID)
Radeon x800 Pro
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
Enermax 550w PSU

I am having the following problem:
One some occasions, the computer will power on after a shut-down. If it is going to happen, it will happen within 1 to 2 minutes of shutting down, and sometimes a bit longer. If I make it past 5 minutes, it will not power on by itself.

I have done the following:

1. Disabled all wake-on functions in the BIOS
2. Reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP Pro once
3. Made sure that it is shutting off and not hibernating
4. Replaced the PSU (old: 500w Ultra-X PSU, new: 550w Enermax)

I noticed that this problem only began to occur when I moved the computer from one part of the house to another - and therefore from one outlet to another. The computer is plugged into a high-quality surge protector. I am going to try plugging it into a different plug on the same circuit, and if that doesn't make a difference, a different plug on a different circuit.

If anyone has any other advice, I'd love to hear it. This thing has me stumped.

phone turns on computer

by solarcircle - 1/23/05 4:44 PM In reply to: 11/05/04 Computer turns on by itself by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had the same problem. Every time someone phoned, my computer would turn on - and it was completely shut down, not in sleep mode.
I went to my BIOS and made sure Wake on LAN and/or Wake on Ring were disabled.
Then I also followed the following procedure:
Control Panel \ System \ Hardware \ Device Manager
Expand the Modem area, right-click your modem
Properties
Power Management tab
Clear "allow this device to bring the computer out of standby"
Apply\ Okay your way out.
I still had the problem so I went back to my BIOS and went to Power Management, then to Resume by PCI PME and disabled that as well - END OF PROBLEM.
Sometime installing a new 56K modem will cause this problem and if you follow all of the above steps it will be solved.
I hope this helps!

Computer turns on by itself - HELP

by ahoher - 12/13/06 7:05 AM In reply to: 11/05/04 Computer turns on by itself by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

OK,
I think I've changed everything that has been listed, but still I have a computer that refuses to stay 'shut down'. It was fine until a few weeks ago. Don't know exactly when the problem started to occur, but there has not been any new software installed. I changed the BIOS (Wake On LAN was on, so I disabled) and I changed the power options of the PC. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
Ann-Marie
