"TOKYO (Nikkei)--Pioneer Corp. (6773.TO) will pull the plug on its loss-ridden television business and shift its DVD player operations to a new venture with Sharp Corp. (6753.TO) in a sweeping overhaul, The Nikkei reported in its Thursday morning edition.
The company had been planning to end in-house production of plasma panels by the end of March and outfit its TVs with Panasonic Corp. (6752.TO) panels instead. Faced with worsening profit margins, however, it has decided to end TV development and production altogether.
Pioneer will idle its lone domestic TV factory in Shizuoka Prefecture sometime this year. Factories in the U.S. and Europe are already slated for closure.
Sales of Pioneer TVs will continue for the time being. The company has not yet decided what to do when inventories run out.
Meanwhile, Pioneer will spin off its DVD player operations, which are equally steeped in losses, to a new company to be set up with Sharp as early as this spring.
The company plans to eliminate several thousand of its roughly 40,000 groupwide jobs in the year ending March 2010. Pioneer is likely to post a consolidated net loss of more than Y100 billion for the year ending this March, wider than the Y78 billion loss it forecast earlier"

When you see the new brighter, thinner, higher contrast ratio Panasonic plasmas, you're gonna forget all about Pioneer anyway.
Rusty
Even though that link doesn't say so, I'll bet they end up being 3-D ready also.
Only the purists are going to be worrying about this. The fact that some Pioneer technology will be combined with Panasonic's production ability is a win-win for plasma fans IMHO. Stay tuned for the good stuff to come! ![]()

THE ART OF PLASMA HDTV HAS BEEN SO REFINED, I TRUST PANASONIC TO SHINE.
RIVER.
Panasonic will pick up where Pioneer left off
I'm interested in purchasing an available elite pro 111 at my neighborhood BB at the new reduced pricing.
Have you or others personally witnessed the new v10 panasonics at CES? Recently available pricing for the Panasonic 50" v10 puts it $700 below the discounted 50" elite's price. Any subsequent thoughts on whether I should buy the current standard bearer (elite) now, or wait until May(ish) for the Panasonic???
and they are outstanding. They are thinner (2"), use 30% less power than '05 plasma models (wouldn't tell me how much better than '08's), the black levels are on a par with the Pioneers, they have 40,000-1 contrast ratios and operate at 600hz as opposed to the Pioneer 480hz. The main thing I noticed when directly comparing them to the Pioneers was that there was zero motion blur. In fairness, I had to look pretty close to see any in the Pioneers. I couldn't really tell if one had blacker blacks than the other but both looked about as black as you can get. I was told, possibly incorrectly, that you had to get over 500hz for 3d shutter technology to work. For sure, I think the shutter technology gives you a better 3d effect than polarized glasses and I believe it's a feature of the future people are going to want from their TV's. I'd say the jump in technology from 08's to the '09 models is quite a bit bigger than the quality jump from '07 to 08. I had toyed with the idea of getting a 58" Panasonic plasma when they got down to around 2000.00. After seeing next years models, I think they are worth waiting for and that they are better than the Pioneers. Who knows, might be cheaper too.
Rusty
Thanks Rusty for your response. If leaked pricing is correct, the v10 panasonics are cheaper than sale prices on remaining pioneer elites.
I Have just bought a Pioneer Plasma TV . They are fantastic. I am really dissappointed that they are going to stop making Plasmas

Pioneer has left one factory open in Japan that will continue to manufacture PRO-111FDs and PRO-151FD only. Supply will be very limited and deliveries to the US will not be on any particular schedule.
Pioneer had operated with regional assembly facilities in CA, Europe and Asia and now they are going to just keep one Japanese plant open. I expect we'll see very limited supplies or 111s and 151s till August '09.
Currently all models are very constrained.

then he added this, paraphrased:
I am 100% sure of the accuracy of my above statement. It came to me through my rep in an official email notification from a senior executive in top management of Pioneer USA, who I personally know well.
. . ., but I do expect it to open up, but very selectively, the limits include:
A. Continued spotty and constrained inventory supply
B. Considering the lower selling prices of especially the 50" and now a little more on the Elite 60" panels, inventory moves fast so sale prices and especially inventory availability will change rapidly for all retailers.
In other words we are looking at fluid market conditions all around with limited but somewhat continued supply till August '09.

Dont cry for pioneer, cheer panasonic!
Pioneer has been the gold stanadard in HDTV for so long, that people hardly noticed how close Panasonic Plasmas have come. In fact, with Panasonic you get far more for the money.
My guess is by 2010 Panasonic will have truer blacks and whites than Kuros ever acheived.
