Problem with AVG and "605 Warnings"

by ladywithlongredhair2003 - 2/6/09 4:24 AM

I from time to time load up AVG to let it do its magic keeping my puter clean from the junk (spyware and all the garbage a kid can manage to find) my kiddo manages to get on this computer. Yesterday I loaded up AVG and ran a scan....it took 6 hours to run (GOOD GRIEF) and I always unplug the cable to let it have peace and quiet while it runs. After waiting 6 hours it finally finished and said to have found 0 infections but it did find 605 warnings. I put them into the vault and went to bed. Tis morning I open the vault and find, Infections, Trojan horses, Virus Downloader, Adware Generic, Trojan horse Fake alert and Found Tracking Cookies. On each item I listed there are many of each. What is all of this? Are they real Trojans and adwares? After all it said if found no infections until i looked in the vault. And my friggin kid has no doubt loaded adware on here because she has managed to get some junk popping up when she loads her account up...I never have junk on mine until yesterday and all of a sudden i get some stupid IMESH wanting me to install it. I end up going to task mang to turn it off until i can figure all this out. I do have AD AWARE on here and ran it before AVG and it normally finds about 400+ things that are no biggie but i get rid of them and I know that ad-aware doesn't do a good enough job by itself hence the reason for loading avg and running it. This puter is getting old and abused (thanks to the kid) she is about to keep this one while mom gets a new one that NO ONE will be allowed to touch because i have never loaded a virus on any puter but until the funds are free i have to make due with this POS (piece of sh) It is a Compaq Windows XP and I use IE.
The reason I don't keep AVG on here is because of lack of memory, again back to thanking the kid. ARGGHHH I keep many of the unnecessary junk turned off because of lack of memory this also. I would say this puter is fragile and I do all i can to keep in some sort of working status until i can give it to the kid and let her truly see what a mess she makes of this thing. (boy that will teach her and self taught tech mom isn't going to have the invested interest in fixing it anymore because i will have a new one that stays locked up tighter than a fort Knox.) But in the mean time, I would like to be able to keep this thing churning along for me and I am a bit nervous to delete anything from the vault until i am sure what to do. I would like to go ahead and do what i need to do with it so i can delete the AVG program because i need the memory it is taking up.
Any help would be so appreciated. And i do plan on keeping the lil moron off a few days so i can enjoy it for a bit without having to fix and deal with this thing for a few days.......lol.
Thanks to anyone who can help here.....
Donna

Donna, I don't think that's a good idea

Not a good idea to remove AVG antivirus by avg.com or grisoft.com just because you need the "memory" it is using. Without antivirus, your computer can be in danger from many types of PC and internet threats.

As to removing the items in AVG vault... you can do that as long as you are quite sure that the system is running fine AFTER AVG put them in the vault. In short,as long it is not false positive, and confirmed bad items.

You mentioned that your daughter installed programs that you know as not good. I'm sure AVG found those and that's why detected as threats.

Donna, if you want to reduce the memory usage and want to see your PC load faster, please do NOT remove antivirus but kindly do the following:

1. Clean up the system from unnecessary and temporary files by downloading CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds
Scroll down the page then select to download the Slim with no toolbar.
Install the program then clean-up the system. The default settings is OK to use and when you're ready to be familiar with it, check the settings to configure it the way you want it to clean or follow the suggested settings below before using CCleaner to clean-up the system:

NOTE: You don't have to run the Registry clean-up using CCleaner. It's not necessary.
Suggested settings for CCleaner:
Open CCleaner>In Windows tab, locate "System" then Uncheck "Memory Dumps, Windows Log Files"
click Options>Advanced>Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
Still in Advanced section>Check the box before "Save all settings to INI file"
Click on Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program. Click OK to any prompts.

2. Scan the system again using your antivirus or other scanners. You can use Malwarebytes anti-malware to scan the system. This program do not install a service which means there should be no memory issue at your end:

Malwarebytes Antimalware (MBAM) http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
You can also download it from http://www.gt500.org/malwarebytes/mbam.jsp

Please update MBAM, run a quick scan.
Reboot when finished.

3. Download StartUpLite from:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php
Save it in your desktop. No installation is required to use this program. Open StartUpLite form your desktop. It will display any startup programs that you do not need to run or load or unnecessary startups. Let StartUpLite, disable the unnecessary programs.

To learn what are those items, you can search from the sites below:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/

4. Defrag your hard-disk. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848

5. Reboot when done. See if your system is better than earlier.

Donna,
Cool your a Donna too! Thank you so much for all the instructions. I will do all of this first thing in the morning. (to long of a day today to start a task this huge) Me asking for help is me at the end of my rope here. I have done all i know to do and I have learned alot over the past few years
I have McAfee on my system, but apparently it is not doing its job. As far as memory goes do you think it would be reasonable to remove the McAfee and just keep AVG? It seems that AVG works so much better than Mcafee. When it was just me on here I did not have these headaches,
I have Webroot window washer on here also, with the programs you suggested, could i get rid of the washer i have on here? And I defrag and clear the history out often. I have done all of that about once a week since I bought this about 6 or 7 yrs ago. I think i have done a fair job of keeping this thing going considering the brat being on here and her thinking she is downloading "free songs" for her IPod......i tell that lil idiot of mine that nothing is free unless it is given to you as a promo gift from a major corporation and then you still have to be leary. But dont ya know at 17 she knows more than i will ever even if i lived to double my age and i am 43 now .......teenagers.....reasons why animals in the wild eat their young.
But in the morning I will do all you suggested for me to do. If i did it all right now, I would more than likely blow this thing up. I will let you know how it all turns out. Again thank you so much. I appreciate your help....
Thanks!
Donna

Oh Donna!

I did not know that you have McAfee together with AVG.
Yes, it is best to remove McAfee not only to get back memory, space but it will also help AVG to do its own job. 2 antivirus running at the same will not help but will cause trouble. From performance to conflicts.

You can remove Mcafee using their McAfee Removal Tool
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
Direct download of the tool: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

I have tried using that tool when I got this desktop and that works like a treat in removing McAfee.

Before you will remove Mcafee, I suggest though to temporary shutdown AVG after disabling the resident shield. This is to avoid conflict while removing another antivirus program.

When you reboot, AVG should enabled itself again or just enable it manually (the resident shield).

No need to get rid of Window Washer because it works better than CCleaner, IMHO. You only stop Window Washer in loading during startup and then run the cleanup manually.

>>But dont ya know at 17 she knows more than i will ever even if i lived to double my age and i am 43 now .......teenagers.....reasons why animals in the wild eat their young.
Calm down, Donna. We need to understand they are curious often and having fun :D
But you're doing great job (you sure know already!) in trying to keep her and the PC a-ok :)

OK and good luck!

You're welcome, Donna. Nice to write "our" name hahaha :D
