Belkin N1 Vision and N1 adapter 2.5MB/s Blunder
by bmn_1213 - 2/5/09 3:03 PMHi , im after buying an N1 vision and a N1 USB adapter to improve wireless and wired access to my NAS. Two hundred euros later im only getting 2.3-2.5MB/s transfer rate
So i tried eliminating all the possibilitys for a start i rechecked the NAS throughput rate 12MB up and 25MB down over ethernet no problems there . I plugged out the NAS and set up a share using a shuttle K45 , Which gave the same transfer rate .
A bit confused i called tech support who told me to update the firmware [No changes] , Change the channels [No changes], Move the router around to eliminate interference [No changes even in the middle of the back garden] and finally to **** off [Their's nothing else we can do]
Ive tried installing different operating systems , Different protocals (FTP) , Ive disabled all security and relay on mac filtering but i keep getting the exact same thing my connection status says im connected at 270Mb/s 34MB/s but in reality i only get 1/10 of that bearly any better than when i started with my oem router and wifi .
Can anyone tell me what on earth could be causing transfers on my local intranet to be so horribly slow ?

So far I've been rather annoyed with most NAS speeds but many are connected with ethernet and run about 10 megabit or 100 megabit tops for just a packet or two then goes down in speed.
I will not dissect why this is so but commiserate that the only way I see any decent wifi speed to my NAS is via FTP. Try that.

Well thats the thing this is not a NAS issue , Ive connected a shuttle PC to the gigabit port the transfer rate remains exactly the same .
This is a bottleneck between the routers wireless n radio and the usb adapter . I should also mention ive tried netgears top end wireless usb adapter on it with the exact same rusults .
So im stuck wondering why in wireless n mode am i getting such terrible transfer rates
Let's dissect wifi a little.

Remember it's half duplex so the handshake to/from a NAS would wipe out speed.
-> Remember I know its not that great. There are a lot of reasons for it to be terrible. Let's add another one.
Let's say I use wifi to my wireless NAS. On top of half duplex I just halved it again. Why?
Laptop sends packet to WAP. WAP sends packet to NAS. All over a shared half duplex wifi airspace.
This is not going to fly.
