I really don't get it ...

by rranger1 - 1/28/09 3:00 AM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

After sifting through dozens upon dozens of posts in this thread, the general theme is that Vista is junk and you should either 1) take the plunge now, deal with it, and then upgrade to Windows 7 later, or 2) find one of the few remaining Windows XP PCs out there, live with it forever, or pay for a full replacement of Windows 7 later.

I work with XP every day at work. I have XP, Vista, and Windows 7 Beta installed on other machines (laptop, home machine), as well as KDE-based Linux. And, I have an iPhone (with its portable OS X OS).

And one thing I can tell you is that ALL of these are inherently stable and work just fine - including the much maligned Vista. In fact, XP is the most problematic (and that isn't really very much at all), giving the "End Program" notification every so often for programs not playing well with others.

I haven't seen a "blue screen" since Windows 95, and I really don't think I'm living a charmed life. I don't know of others personally who suffer this fate either.

If I were you, I'd go out and get the cheapest Core 2 Duo (or AMD equivalent) PC I could get with Vista 64-bit on it, and upgrade to Windows 7 later. This really isn't worth all of the hand wringing, since you can get a well-equipped PC that would run circles around your current hardware for @ $500.

I wouldn't jump into Windows 7

by geemayb - 1/30/09 9:15 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have owned and worked on systems with Windows 95, 98, XP and Vista and my favorite is XP. I think it is by far the most stable operating system that Microsoft has made. I found the most disappointing features of Vista was that a lot of my paid software would not work on it and after contacting the companies they did not offer an upgrade. In other words they expected you to buy the upgraded product that was made just for Vista. Also my Vista system freezes up all the time and the wireless printer I have on my network refuses to work half the time on my Vista system. This seems to be one of the dozens of problems with Windows Vista. I have not have any problems with my XP system even after installing the SP3 patch.

I wouldn't even think of buying a new system with a new operating system on it until the bugs are worked out. In my opinion the bugs have still not been remedied on Windows Vista and instead of trying to fix them Microsoft is simply releasing a new operating system.

Wait for WIN7?

by Lennygrt - 1/30/09 10:42 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have been running the Beta release on WIN 7, and my personal opinion is that its the best beta they have done yet. Very few problems, and it has got rid of a lot of the Vista Nag screens. Almost everything that works with Vista works with it, as its not a radical change. My only glitch was an antivirus that refused to load when it detected I had Win7. If you can find a copy of WIN7 now, download it and try it as a dual boot on your old computer, so you wont mess up anything if you have problems. I have had no problems with it myself. As well as the beta is running, I suspect MS will release it before too long, probably mid 2009. LEN

7 year old?

by TheManInDboX - 2/2/09 1:28 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Well for one, at 7yrs old i would think the basics should do. Which windows 2k was completely capable of doing. However if you are looking for a new machine i would suggest something out of the norm. I would stay away from Mac as there soaring prices are something of the rich and shameless. I would also stay away from windows (I am an MCSE (Microsoft), CCNA (Cisco), A+ certified (Hardware), Dell Certified engineer)I have been testing "7" since the conference in march, Ms-Windows 7 or vista 6.1 as it is called internally by Microsoft is just as bad as vista was, there are still way to many issues to think about buying it. Also, a general rule is not to buy anything with a windows sticker on it until service pack one, so that most bugs can be worked out. I would try to opt for windows XP as it is up-datable till 2014 and is far more stable and much better then 7 ever will be. But again, if you are looking for another option, i would suggest downloading and installing Ubuntu, which is (in new skin) much better looking and functioning then windows is, and is a much better OS, it runs cleaner, smoother, it requires less PC to run, It is free and there are almost zero viruses, it gets updates for free, and everything is much more fluid. Had i learned on a Linux machine (ubuntu) and grown with it, instead of windows i would be making double what i am right now. (with Microsoft)

RE: Should I wait for windows 7 or move to Vista now?

by rifeg2 - 2/3/09 11:50 AM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Like several of the other responses I agree with holding off on vista- If you do not have a 64 bit dual or quad core processor and anywhere from 2-6 gigs of virtual memory (depending on what programs/ applications you intend to run) I would stick with something less process intenesive. I purchased vista ultimate for just under $400.00 and chalk it up as one of the worst invetments I have ever made given my system set up. Basic questions you should find answers to before puchasing an OS are-
Will it run reliably with my current hardware?
Do my chipset/Mboard/bios/graphics cards have certified drivers that function optimumly with this OS?
In your case- If the operating systems takes 30gigs of space to function, do I have enough HD space to run and store all of my other applications?
Do i have the 2-6gig of memory required to make graphics intensive software/ apps run smoothly?

Research on what you are really after apps vs gamming, make sure you have the hardware to support it and waiting for accurate reveiws of software is the best approach. (Too bad i didn't follow my own advise.)

Re: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now?

by GinaPA - 2/3/09 2:31 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi Jerome,

I just bought a new laptop with Vista about a month ago. I had been going back and forth with the same thing that you are doing now and I even put off buying it for awhile! However, I couldn't wait any longer and finally took the plunge after talking to a few tech people. I have no regrets.

From what I was told, and also from what I read myself, the majority of people who have had problems with Vista had upgraded from a previous operating system, whereas many of us who bought a new computer with it pre-installed have had no problems. I had also been told that many of the negative reports about Vista were actually based on the new features people had to adapt to, and not based on Vista's performance. I've come to believe that; after all, we humans really don't like change and are 'creatures of habit!'

Also...I subscribe to a LOT of computer newsletters and, so far, many people who have tested Windows 7 feel it is just an update to Vista! I have not tried it myself, so I can only tell you what I read on that regard.

Another BIG drawback (at least some feel), is that Windows 7 does NOT offer Windows Mail or Outlook Express--Microsoft wants everyone to go with Windows LIVE Mail--their online email program! Because it's appearing that so many people are outraged by this, hopefully Microsoft will reconsider this decision before they issue the first official Windows 7 version. But for now, this is their goal! So, if you do not want to rely on a cyber email service only, you will have to BUY an email program if Microsoft stands pat on this.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents! As I said, at first I was afraid of going with Vista too, but I have had no problems whatsoever with it. There's always a few things you have to get used to when you go with a different operating system, but all in all, my experience is that Vista isn't so bad!....Gina

Windows live mail

by RW-1 - 9/5/09 11:07 AM In reply to: Re: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by GinaPA

You are only partially correct about WLM.

Yes, MS wants everyone to use WLM, HOWEVER - You are not limited to it being an ONLINE email program. You may configure it as you wish, it is the type of accounts you have that may dictate how you access it.

I currently use it for pop mail downloaded to my desktop on my main, non-MS account (my own domain hosted email), and it is setup on my laptop for IMAP (so that I do not run into duplication issues).

Now, you may not like the client (and I do not like the latest version of WLM, not boding well for contrast on LCD's), however you have an option because windows mail is definately gone.

Vista with SP 1

by manmur - 2/5/09 3:47 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi Jerome,

I did debated on getting a Vista laptop for a wile. However after my XP-home (UP-graded from ME) went to heck on me, I went and brought a laptop with Vista Home Premium. That was five months ago and I am happy with it.

I think that most of the user complaints has to due with up-grading from an older system. They have issues with the lack of drivers for Vista for their hardware like the Video card, sound card, and printer to name a few. SO naturally, they place blame on Microsoft for not supporting their hardware. Also they thought that the minimum requirements for Vista is too high, but it is on the high end of XP. They also did not like the new start menu, but were too stubborn to change it back to Windows classic. That is my opinion though.

I would advise to go with Vista. Make sure that you get the service pack one. Depending on your needs I would advice that you go with home premium. On a personal note I think that 7 is more if an up-date to vista (think service pack 2). you will have make sure that it has at lest 3 of RAM and dual core processor.

If you do decide to go with 7, I would advise that you want a year so they can get some of the patches out. However it sounds like your computer will not last that long.

I am impressed that your system lasted for 7+ years

Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now?

by PiniMoreno - 2/10/09 4:33 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

What would be the problem if you buy the PC with Vista? You can always upgrade to the new version of Windows if and when it appears.

Go with Windows XP with Vista disks from Dell

by rickhowe - 2/13/09 7:03 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I just confronted a similar issue. But I didn't want to mess around with Vista, so I went to Dell and paid about $50 more for machine loaded with Windows XP, along with Vista Ultimate disks. So when Windows 7 comes around and proves itself stable, I'll install the Vista Ultimate and take advantage of Microsoft's expected discount upgrade to Windows 7 for Vista users. I get to use the very reliable Windows XP, and still have the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 7.

No XP to 7

by baggage1 - 2/13/09 7:58 PM In reply to: Go with Windows XP with Vista disks from Dell by rickhowe

You will not be able to upgrade to 7 from XP. So in my opinion if you get a machine that will handle Vista in all of it's visual glory then it will handle 7 and XP standing on it's head. XP's days are numbered, I don't understand peoples relentless obsession with OLD XP.

XP to Windows 7

by waytron - 2/14/09 3:08 AM In reply to: No XP to 7 by baggage1

Not exactly true. You will be able to purchase an upgrade from XP to Windows 7, but you will have to perform a fresh install. Which is really no big deal seeing as it is never a good idea to take the upgrade path anyway. It is always best to start with a fresh install of any new OS. By the way, the days are numbered for Vista too. It is just a matter of how many days we are talking about. There is a large installed base of XP out there and is still being sold today, especially in the Netbooks. Updates and patches for XP will still be around for a good long time.

One Of the Better Hedge Your Bets Options

by cnetmessageman - 2/15/09 7:59 AM In reply to: Go with Windows XP with Vista disks from Dell by rickhowe

Yes, Dell does offer this option - PC preloaded with XP Pro and bonus Vista Ultimate discs for $20 more. And it's offered on Dell's Dimension 531s machine which starts at $399 but properly configured (without a monitor) runs about $510 not including shipping and taxes.

Dell has a number of variations (seemingly the same but at different starting prices) so you may need to go through the process of Customizing more than one of them to see which one provides you the better deal. You also may need to confirm that you are being shipped the actual OS discs since some configurations specifically state that you will receive OS discs while others do NOT (may just be an oversight but I wouldn't risk making that assumption).

Wow, it hard to believe that this thread is still active.

Better to have but not loved at all than to love and lost?

by ````` - 2/14/09 6:54 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I don't know which is worse: an OS that requires hardware AND software replacement to deliver even less usability or an OS that "automatically" stops installing its "automatic" security updates until every user accepts yet another license. To complicate matters, if your application refuses to run it is because the operating system was upgraded or perhaps because it wasn't upgraded to the super premium ultimate version. Well if we let a program perform and operation and it breaks the system, we're going to have to do a sytem restore anyway so why not just make a system restore point for every operation that could break the system; A: There would be too many. Back-up everything you already paid for- DRM keys, music, subscription keys to AV, the preinstalled OS.... TWICE. And once the old hardware is gone or data overwritten, ALL bets are off. Any upgrade supercedes all features previously paid for, especially the "free" one may mean updating applications/drivers all over again and paying mo money to reobtain beloved features.
