You're spot on cohnwj. I first had to deal with this problem as a result of itunes not playing nice with the other software on the system. It appears that itunes and anyDVD don't like each other at all! I've got a workaround for people who use those two programs, but that's for another thread...
i did not see any upper or lower filter, now what do i do jazacoop i can see the e drive when i go to my comp but it does not read any cd or dvd how cn i fix this?
Hi kbazemo,
This fix is designed for people who can't see their drives in My Computer. I'm afraid your drives not reading discs is another entirely different problem, so please don't use the instructions I listed as a fix.
Unfortunately the problem you're experiencing could be caused by any number of issues. I recommend you do a search of the forums and see if anybody is having the same problem as you. If you can't find anything, start a new thread listing you're problem in as much detail as possible including when it stopped working and what you did just before it stopped working. The more information you give, the more likely it is that someone will be able to correctly diagnose your problem and recommend an appropriate fix.
Bare in mind though that its possible the drive is broken and will require replacement, but it's better (and cheaper) to exhaust all other options before going out and buying a new drive.
Good luck ![]()
Thanks for the tip but I was a little slow and I went and brought a new one and that seemed to fix the problem.

Thanks You are the man Jaz, that worked first try. When I went to the windows 7 Beta it stopped working, I applied your fix it is up and running. All drives are now recognized.
Now can you help me get this system to recognize mt printers!
Nickao
Good to hear Nickao.
Re your printers - bare in mind that you should use Windows Vista drivers with Windows 7. If you put the time in and use plenty of help resources, you should be successful ![]()
All the best!!
I did this when it happened to me and all I got was that the cd could be read but coundn't burn.I then had to boot from disk to re-install Windows xp to get back my cd drive back again.I got this problem from installing Roxio Record now 9 and I was recording at too high of a sound volumn through my sound card.I lost my cd drive and almost lost my sound card.I re-installed Roxio and record now at a lower volumne from my turntable. It is working great now.MIKE
Sorry, recommending a restore point as a security for anything is not advisable because sometimes when you want to make a restore, windows takes the usual long time and seems to be doing the restore, but at the end it tells that the restore could not be done, to choose another restore point. What do you do then? Your data is lost for good.
Hi Straydog1st,
You're right in that sometimes system restore decides not to restore points, but if it is unsuccessful, your data is not lost for good. Even in a worst case scenario where can't get windows to boot, you can always connect the hard drive to another system and access the files on the drive.
There are also workarounds out there for manually restoring a restore point when windows can't do it with the wizard (the most obvious being selecting 'use last known good configurations settings that worked' from the boot menu before windows starts). There are much more advanced techniques out there also (do a little research if you don't believe me).
The fact of that matter is that creating a restore point is the easiest way to make a backup of the registry. It is used a precautionary step. The truth is that if people follow my instructions to the letter, they won't do any damage to their registry in the first place, but it never hurts to err on the side of caution.
tanks my cp is working now!!!!!!!!
There's a Microsoft Knowledge Base article on this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270008/
It happened to me after uninstalling MagicDisk
Sorry for asking this question, but did you mean your Hardware Drive itself (where you insert the CD & DVD's) is not being recognized by your PC anymore? The reason for my asking is : I had this problem (my PC stopped recognizing my CD/DVD Drive) for more than 6 months already BUT when I insert a CD or a DVD... once in a while, it works & play, but most of the time, it doesn't. It's a hit-and-miss.
So if my problem the same as your... good then, as I can find a fix in this forum. But if it's different, kindly anyone, please HELP me with a fix.
Hi ggand4,
I'm a little confused in understanding exactly what your problem is. If you can't see either of your drives when you double click My Computer, then this fix should work for you.
If you can see the drives, but when inserting discs you can't get the computer to read them, then you're experiencing a different problem.
Hope that clarified ![]()
I am yet another happy camper who found effective help from "Jazacoop", and want to commend him for his expert help with restoring my dysfunctional CD/DVD-ROM drive after I cleaned out my registry with a freeware registry cleaner. It worked as advertised but it appeared that I cleaned out one thing too many, and I was at my wit's end (almost) until I read your suggestion; it came in the nick of time, too. I dreaded messing with my registry and was looking at several hours, or possibly days' worth, of O/S and application re-installs , but you saved my bacon. YOU are the bomb, and a 5-star maestro in every way. Thank you!
thanks a lot .I am using a recovery file i am making reboot and thats it. THANKS ...
