TV Speakers as Surround Sound Fronts?

by rorywohl - 1/30/09 6:09 PM

So, I have this big beautiful Sony 46" LCD TV hooked up to my surround sound system, but the surround front left & right speakers are kind o' ugly. Is there any way I can use the speakers built in to the TV as the front left & right surround sound speakers? Or is this just a bad idea?

Now that's ugly, hehe. You sure it's not an amplifier problem?

They Don't Sound Ugly, They Look Ugly

The speakers are two big, rectangular boxes, whereas the tv speakers are built in to the frame of the LCD. The center speaker is fairly slim, so it's not as noticeable.

I heard the Bose companion 2 and 3 speakers. For the price of $60 and $200, I thought it sounds pretty good.

Well, my TV & A/V setup allows me to use the TV speakers

simultaneously with all the other speakers (a set of Paradigm in my case) which are controlled via the receiver (a Denon.) The result is two sets of speaker controllers. I would have to control all the Paradigms from the receiver & also regulate the volume level of the TV speakers separately. A bit awkward to me.

A temporary fix until you get a pair of non-ugly front L&Rs.

GREAT..I told him to give it to whenever he's tire of looking at it. Personally I rather have great sound than beautiful looks.

Bad idea, if you are unhappy with you current fronts, get different ones.....

Your TV speakers will not be voice matched with your center channel and other surround sound speakers so you will have tinny sound coming from your TV speakers for your L/R speakers and more rich sound coming from your surround sound speakers.
