Sony DCR-HC62 VS Cannon ZR930

by infromsea - 1/26/09 9:46 AM

I'm trying to decide between two camcorders and I've narrowed it down to these two. I have both spec sheets in front of me and they are dang close, here are the inputs for consideration.

Use- Home movies, my kids playing ball, that kind of thing, nothing very demanding

Price- Up to 300.00

Format- Mini DV

Still pics- Don't care, we use digital cameras for that reason

Transfer to a computer- Highly important, I copy family videos to the computer and then make DVDs for family living out of state.

Why I'm thinking the ZR930-
Cost, it's about 70 bucks cheaper than the Sony.
It has an infrared remote, that will make for very easy "copy to the CPU" sessions since I can just use the remote vs the camera controls
It's highly rated for a budget camera

Why I'm thinking about the DCR-HC62-

I've used Sony camcorders before (borrowed from a friend) and I really enjoyed the overall experience.
I can go pick it up at the base exchange so it's tax free (but still 70 bucks more) and I can more easily return it if I don't like it/it has problems
It has decent reviews on multiple websites

Specs:
DCS-HC62 ZR930

Price 299.00 (local pickup) 230.00 (online)

Sensor 1/6" CCD 1/6" CCD

Still pics Yes, 1 MG No

Video pixels 670K(16:9) 450K(16:9)

Optical zoom 25X 37X

LCD 2.7" 2.7"

Of course I've got all the other specs here but those seemed the most important. I'm leaning towards the Sony since I can pick it up locally and it has a higher pixel count for video. The question is, is that 70 dollar premium worth the higher pixel count, the fact that I like Sony camcorders etc? The fact that that the Sony captures stills doesn't help me so the extra cost for that reason is a wash. Is there anything else I'm missing? In truth, these will probably both work fine for what I'm doing but I love to analyze the heck out of these things.

Thanks in advance,

TW

in daylight the hc62 will have better quality due to a higher pixel count, but in low light it wont be as good as the zr930. the zoom on the zr930 will be longer, but the lack of good stabilization might not be worth it. the zr930 has no filter threads unlike the hc62. i recommend that you buy a $5 uv filter to protect the lens from dust

if you would rather have a sony take a look at the hc52. it has a lower pixel count then the hc62 and zr930, and a slightly longer zoom

Sony's(DCR-HC62) A/V connecting cable

by badri535 - 9/18/09 12:50 PM In reply to: hmm by chickenorfish

Dear All,
I would be grateful if you would quench my query: IS Sony's(DCR-HC62) A/V connecting cable unidirectional or bidirectional??? I want to record the audio only from the presenter with the help of wireless microphone without using(disabling) Sony's built in microphone. For this reason i am trying to connect with the A/V cable but haven't been successful yet. Could any one suggest how i could record the audio from the wireless microphone(SHURE) i have???
Regards
