Our PC (HP- a1330n pavilion) stops making noise, monitor goes dark(sleep) but on/off button stays lit. Nothing we do will bring it back and we can not turn off from switch(button), it must be unplugged from power supply and re-plugged in. We have our HP plugged into an APC power back-up/monitor both systems are around 3yrs old.
A few months ago I remember a message coming up saying the battery in the APC unit was old and should be replace, which was never done.
Any thoughts or solutions to this problem will be appreciated.
Thank you,

That sounds like a fault in the power supply. I had that happen to a system once, but I honestly don't recall if or how I fixed it.
Anyway, there's always a chance the UPS is sending a dirty signal to the computer and that's causing some internal failsafe to trip in the power supply. So, I'd start with replacing that battery. You want to get to it fairly soon, because over time those UPS batteries start to bloat, and trust me, they are NOT fun to try and get out when that happens. Give it long enough, and they will likely rupture, and that is REALLY something you don't want happening. UPS batteries use a lead based acid, and that would represent a serious health hazard.
Ok I just tried something, I plugged our PC into the wall outlet to by-pass the APC unit. The PC never shutdown for over 1hr. it did go into sleep mode w/ the power button blinking at which time I was able to bring it back by pushing the power button and was then able to turn it off w/ the same power button.
So now we will replace the Battery for or APC, it is only $29.99 via the APC web site.
Thank you for your quick response JG.
