First, let me say: I come to the cnet forums because the other people HERE are so much more educated than I am in personal electronics. I'm an expert at what I do (landscaping) and bow down to the experts that understand computers. That said, I hope that some kind individual will read this post and help me make the right decision, based on my needs.
I just saw, with LUST in my eyes, the Sony P series of wee computers that are just launched and reviewed by cnet. I want one! But, I don't know which one (there are two models.)http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644600396&parentCategoryId=16154#
This is what I need: a very small, very portable computer because I travel so much. All I ever do on a computer is answer emails and surf the web. I have two 17" screen laptops that are staying put; they are a bummer to keep lugging around the globe. On those two, I have my Zune music files and my e-Reader book files. And please, I do not want a Blackberry or any phone-type thing that has a 2" screen that I have to suffer reading emails!
Every once in a while I create a Word document and read a pdf file that someone has sent me but that's it.
What I do NOT do: I do not and never will do any of the following: watch Youtube or other silly videos. I will NOT Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, blog or any other waste of my time. I am forced, because of friendship, to follow one person's blog and that is all the indulgence that I will allow. I don't download tv shows or watch movies on my computers, either. Don't burn/rip music or burn photos onto any CD's (that's what my flash drive and back up hard drive are for.)
And before anyone gets snarky and thinks I don't "have a life" because I don't spend it in front of a computer, that's just plain silly! I just believe in actively particating in life, not passively.
So, here's Sony's 2 alternatives to the new P series:
The $900 dollar ones have this: Intel® Processor (1.33GHz)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic
Model Features: 8" display with XBRITE-ECO™ LCD technology, 2GB RAM, 60GB HDD, 1.5 lbs., GPS, integrated mobile broadband, glossy Onyx Black, Bluetooth® technology.
The $1,200 dollar ones have this: Intel® Processor (1.33GHz)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium
Model Features: 8" display with XBRITE-ECO™ LCD technology, 2GB RAM, 64GB SSD, 1.4 lbs., GPS, integrated mobile broadband, glossy Garnet Red, Bluetooth® technology
The only difference that I can see is the Vista one, of Home BASIC with 60GB HDD or Home PREMIUM with 64GB SSD.
Please, what is the difference between BASIC and PREMIUM Vista and what in the world is HDD and SSD??? It's only a $300 difference between the two and I've always been taught tha t"Bigger is better" but I don't know if the more expensive P series will just be a waste for what I want to do with this laptop.
Thanks to anyone who reads and responds to this query.
The 160GB version of the Acer Aspire One in Sapphire Blue.
The SSD or Hard Disk choice is nothing more than solid state vs. old hard disk technology. Both do the same job. I opted for the larger hard disk at the cheaper price.
I installed Open Office since it was easy to install over the web but later the office gave up a copy of Office 2003 and that runs just fine.
The Vista versions are slight changes listed at a Microsoft web page. For your use, either will do fine.
-> Sorry for the short reply but I really like my Net Book and am happy I paid just 399 for it on Amazon. The P series you listed are just a tad bigger and very nice.
Bob
I immediately went to amazon and checked out your new baby...sweet!
I can see the attraction and I'm glad that you're so happy with your choice. I have a very similar small Sony Vaio that I bought 4 years ago; can't rememeber model number but they don't make them that small any longer...has an 8" screen.
I appreciate your giving me an alternative to look at and also explaining to me what a SSD means.
The Sony Vaio P series isn't available until February so I still have a couple of weeks to dream and look at the possibilites. There's also a Sony store in Chicago so I think I'll go over there and see if they have a model for me to check out.
R. Profit: I don't know if you check back on forums but I wanted to thank YOU so much for referring me to the Acer Aspire. I did a lot of research and thinking after you posted to me; weighed everything about the new Sony P series and read hundreds (yes, hundreds) of reviews on the Acer Aspire. For the price, and what I wanted it to do, I finally ponied up and ordered a beautiful copper-colored model from HSN. They had it on 5 monthly flex-pays plus they had $600.00 bucks of additional programs that they gave you, for FREE! Now, with the almost $1000 that I saved from not buying the Sony, I can buy that 7" Archos 7 and DVR cradle that I've wanted so badly!
The killing stroke to the Sony was what many, many potential reviewers were siting: within a year, TOUCH SCREEN NETBOOKS/LAPTOPS will start making the entry into the market and if anyone is going to use this technology, it will be Sony. I have their e-Reader and almost every year they upgrade and change it (with a Buy Back program) so I'll just enjoy my little, cheap Acer until a touch screen Sony P comes along and then I'll snap that baby up!
Thanks for steering me in this direction and educating me to the Acer!
I like my Aspire One still and it's working out very well. But I did add the following to mine.
Logitech V450 Nano Mouse.
The little adapter never needs removing and this little upgrade for me was well worth it.
Enjoy!
Bob
The Aspire from HSN actually comes with a FREE wireless mouse, even a better reason for me to order it from them!
Feel good about yourself today, that you influenced a stranger by your words and knowledge. Your post promted me to buy something I had no idea existed. Thanks!!!
