I had the two power inverter boards replaced about a month ago and the picture quality is still great. They changed the firmware to 1003, which still allows full control over various user menu settings. Later firmware versions have several things grayed out.
If you elect to have this done be sure that they replace the version 3 blue boards with version 4 green boards. The first time they did the board swap on mine they put in the same type boards as what they took out. Naturally, the IR problem was not fixed.
To check your firmware go to the setup screen in the user menu and scroll down to the last option. It says something like "Update Firmware". Highlight that but do NOT press enter. After you have it highlighted press the INFO button on your remote and it will show you what firmware you currently have.
In case you haven't heard, Circuit City is closing. Announcement was made today: http://www.circuitcity.com/closed.html
It looks like returns/echanges can me made for the next 14 days. Extended warrantees are still valid as they are backed by a third-party insurer. Liquidation sales are expected to begin as early as tomorrow with all sales final.
First CompUSA, now Circuit City. If BB goes under, for browsing electronics we'll be left with the choice of Wal-Mart, or the other Wal-Mart in the next town.
If Wal-Mart was the only option I would never again buy new electronics. I will not step foot in one of their stores.
BTW, my local CC is doing quite a brisk business on the first day of their liquidation sale this morning.
I went to CC this morning and it was packed. 10% off everything, 20% CDs & DVDs, 30% some car-related stuff. However, I went over to BB and they were pretty busy too.
Unfortunately 20% on TVs NOT on sale still is not much of a discount when you look at prices online. I'm lucky I returned my 850 before they got to this point, it was a zoo in the store today. There was a guy from PC richards telling people to go there for better service!!! Classy! I did find one small sony for the bedroom that was a little cheaper but I was going to get it anyway. They are not accepting CC credit cards which I thought a little weird...its Chase not CC doing the card.
not just isolated problem, tried two 850s both had same problem, remote would not work with tv on even tried to shelter cable box from tv still would not work also had same problem with 750 ,but was able to push cable box to back and bottom of tv stand and remote worked fine, even tried firmware update for 850 with no results, called samsung support, she said they never heard of problem, but funny they had a filmware update for something she never heard of.hh.gregg had several returned and so did circuit city for same problem.
I called Samsung customer support and POLITELY told the fellow that there was a hardware fix for the 850 IR Interference problem, that it involved swapping out two "inverter boards," and he put me on hold to talk with the supervisor. After a couple of minutes, he gave me the number of the local Samsung repair man and I called and set up an appointment. This repair is very new, so many are not aware of it. But if you describe it, they'll find the info and fix it. A couple of days later the man showed up with the new boards--he was very nice and highly competent. Swapped the boards, problem fixed. Also, there was no impact on the picture quality at all. So, don't give up on this fantastic television picture. It beats all the competition in my view. Just get the boards swapped if you need to. Before the fix, all my remotes worked, except for the Time Warner HD cable box. Now everything works perfectly. Samsung is offering very good customer service, so complaints sound to me like moaning and whining rather than an adult seeking a rational solution. The extremely patient Samsung tech representative on this forum has provided a solution, if you care to pursue it. Here's what he says you should do:

Another approach for "an adult seeking a rational solution": do your homework (thank you CNET!), and buy a tv that doesn't require all those steps in order to work in a household environment.

Guys,
I'm probably the last guy qualified to sound like a monitor, but let's keep it real. We're here to help each other, not call each other out.

I know nothing about nothing, just saw 3 or 4 posts by him that referenced Sony being so much better than Samsung, so thought I'd inject a bit of humor with a reply.
Hmmmm...
Well, if it turns into a flame war, they come and lock the thread and this is one of those threads that I desperately don't want locked. (Please please please!!!)
All is forgiven. ![]()

Thank you for this post. I have been waiting for somebody to say this. I'll now schedule the fix.
Bob
So I followed the same procedure with different result. Called Samsung support last week and quickly got a transaction created. Next day contacted by Nisi (local Samsung repair outfit) and scheduled the fix. Tried to explain issue to Nisi person but she said she only schedules things ... wouldn't let me give her details. Tech showed up 3 days later as scheduled and thought I was crazy wanting to replace inverter boards. He made some calls and said he would order parts and in parallel confirm this was the fix. I then noticed on the Samsung support site there is now a page for this problem under "troubleshooting/other problems/when my tv is on, I am unable to control my other devices" - so I called support to see if they would direct the Nisi tech to the fix. After 30 minutes on the phone including a transfer to Executive Customer Relations everybody talked to me like I have 3 heads. Wow - very disappointing. If the Nisi guy doesn't come through in the next week I'll need to go the refund and buy a Sony route. Samsung guy .... can you help me find the right people at your company who can help?
