Downloaded and ready to install

by yosemite003 - 1/16/09 11:31 PM In reply to: Windows 7 beta testers, how do you like it and why? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have the Beta but I have my taxes that I'm in the middle of
therefore I won't run 7 until I push them out of the way. Hope to
get this done in the next week or two and then I'll get back to
you. But from what I have been able to learn so far there should be
no great transition problem. Once in place plan to use it with my
Graphics and general photo-restoration.

Windows 7 Beta build 7000

by ROCKER761 - 1/17/09 3:30 AM In reply to: Windows 7 beta testers, how do you like it and why? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I installed Windows 7 beta on my laptop and so far I like it,it boots my pc faster than vista and seems to run cleaner, you might want to call Windows 7, sp2 for vista!. I think microsoft has a winner here with Windows 7,we'll see.

It is a love, hate relationship

by davidjames24 - 1/17/09 5:14 AM In reply to: Windows 7 beta testers, how do you like it and why? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

So I have been testing out windows 7 since it came out, on my laptop.
I did a clean install. It installed all but one driver perfectly.
I love what they have done with the task bar are how you have icons for all programs running or anything you plug in.
I like the look and feel and I think it runs a lot faster and smoother than windows but....
I always close my laptop lid and put it to sleep or hibernate. when I come back to my computer so far it either has the blue screen of death doing a memory dump or it has shut down itself improperly.
But that will eventually be fixed and it may be a proplem wit one of my drivers so we will see
But otherwise I like it

Main concerns

by GUARDIANANGEL822 - 1/17/09 7:04 AM In reply to: W7 rulles! by zipias

I have at lease three main concerns before I commit to installing Windows 7 Beta.
1. Will my Internet service and functionality be compromised?
2. will all my documents and current programs be transferred automatically to the Beta version, or should I copy theses programs to a cd for re-install?
3. I have 250 GB internal drive, Should I partician a section of this drive for Windows 7 Beta to place it safe. ( Dual Boot ) I presently have Vista home Basis installed.
Basically, I just want to be reassured that I won't have to reinstall my basis software programs such as internet explorer 8, Registry cure and Windows advance system care pro. these three programs did one hell of a job stabilizing vista to a satifactory level of performance. the replies on Windows 7 are all positive to the tune of 98%, it is the 2% that concerns me. Please reply directly to jhaskins75@comcast.net Thank you, John

Concerns...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 1/17/09 11:47 AM In reply to: Main concerns by GUARDIANANGEL822

1.) Compromised? No. Interrupted? Doubtful but possible. Remember, it is a beta.
2.) No. If you read my forum sticky you'll note you should NOT upgrade your primary machine to the beta, and a parallel installation will not have access to your programs.
3.) Partitioning does NOT ensure you will not lose your personal files. Remember, it is a beta - read my sticky for the traditional warnings.

Windows 7

by Karada_uk - 1/17/09 6:33 AM In reply to: Windows 7 beta testers, how do you like it and why? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I got hold of the unofficial Beta release to try before the official one came out. Both are the same build. The first machine I installed it on had no problems with the install but after the final reboot continually gave a "Signal out of range" message on my monitor (a 19" TFT). Since then we have loaded the official version on a Laptop and it is working fine. The most noticeable thing about 7 is that it is much leaner and less hungry for memory. Vista Ultimate on the Laptop used 1.2GB RAM when idle on the desktop, 7 uses 450MB. A vast improvement. We have also virtualised the AMD versions for 1 and 2 core processors in both 32 and 64 bit versions to run under VMWare and most things work well. Video playback was a bit slow on my machine (AMD Athlon 3500+ but it is a bit ancient now) and the video drivers in VMWare don't do full justice to the video output. So far the only problem we have had was running Google Earth under virtualised 7 which caused a catastrophic crash of all systems, 7, VMWare and the host XP.
Apart from that most programs appear to run although there are problems with the security systems in some programs which don't recognise 7. (Not surprising really!) The 64 bit version appears to run well on AMD dual core and is again very lean on resources.
Even virtualised on XP it seems to be much quicker than Vista.
So far, 7 looks like the O/S that Vista should have been.

I like it ...so far

by fernandovd - 1/17/09 7:05 AM In reply to: Windows 7 beta testers, how do you like it and why? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I am testing W7 in my secondary machine, an old PC with an old Nvidia card, slow processor and only one- more or less- positive feature: 1 G in Ram, already a somewhat obsolete advantage as much today computers comes with 2 or more.
I had a Vista Home Premium loaded in that machine and though patch after patch and specially after SP1, Vista became a rather workable, OK OS, with W7 I had got a better system. It is lot faster in the booting, in the deployment of dialogs and even it is somewhat more beautiful. Exception made for my Zonelab firewal and a Chessbase chess program, Fritz 11, everything else run OK. I suppose both program will deliver sooner or later some kind of upgrade, so no problem at all.
Then, as a resumé, to date I can say I like it and I presume I still will in the future.

Win7 Beta MUCH better

by gregguillot - 1/17/09 8:06 AM In reply to: Windows 7 beta testers, how do you like it and why? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have Win7 Beta 64bit loaded on an AMD Athlon 64 X@ 6000, 4 GB RAM, 80GB HD and an ATI 4850 Video card. The beta loaded quickly and is VERY fast compared to Vista. The test was video games - I am playing Call of Duty 4, Team Fortress, and HL2 with no problems. I am very impressed. Of course, 64bit does not help much without 64bit applications and more RAM, but just to start with the config I have and have it perform so well is a very pleasant surprise.

I was tired of my old xp home edition

by skinsman61 - 1/17/09 8:09 AM In reply to: Windows 7 beta testers, how do you like it and why? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

and my wife's new HP with vista sucked
so I seen the Windows 7 beta was out and downloaded it burned it installed a spare 20 gig hd it did take some time to install on this Sony Vaio PCV=RS630G with 2FoI was completely suprised to find it installed my printer drivers as well as my webcam's
My Starlogic has always been needy in color performance but again
I was so suprised for the first time the colors were brilliant and shiny
This OS was really going fast I took about 3 hrs to browse it and read how it worked then I looked in my network and seen it already had installed my wife's and both my childrens computers to network
Again WOW
I did have some trouble with third party software and I havent yet got my vpn to work (still reading) but all in all

This is a very Remarkable Upgrade to the vista premium and what you would expect out of Microsoft corp.

I would like to mention that my 2o gig hd only had like almost 2 gigs left free but thats ok for me for now.

I guarantee when Windows 7 is released I will be first in Line
any questions send to me skinsman61@hotmail.com

Have a great surfing day B-)

Win 7 Ultimate Beta.

by Johnny Bramham - 1/17/09 9:16 AM In reply to: I was tired of my old xp home edition by skinsman61

I have to say that my initial experience with the 64-bit W7 was a bit of a disappointment; to begin with, it wouldn't install on anything other than a SATA drive, and then only after a lengthy scanning process.
However, after an installation that was creditably swift at one hour, eleven minutes from start to finish, and I then began looking for all the normal configuration utilities to set the system up in my preferred style.
The setup is so close to Vista in so many ways, and also incorporates many little touches that obviously are "borrowed" from Linux and Unix, but the main impression was one of 'bittiness' and lack of cohesion in the GUI that had me scratching my head when looking for Folder Options (and other apps!)
After four years learning where it was under XP, I was less than happy to find it "grouped" under a submenu in the apps folder.
Overall, it was stable enough and loaded fairly quickly; however most of the changes seem to have been made because they could be made, rather than because they needed to be made.
Likewise, the new bells and whistles that have been added seem to have limited use or functionality for most people; who needs to click back on a browser tab when there's a back button on my mouse that does the same thing?
Yes, I'm sure that the relocated bits and bobs can be learned over time and with use, but the point is why do we have to?
I will persevere with it and maybe get used to it as I did with XP, but it does seem to me that this OS is the answer to a question that nobody apart from Microsoft asked.
JB.

Re Release of Windows 7 Beta Not Too Late

by Nomadica - 1/17/09 11:20 AM In reply to: too Late by GUARDIANANGEL822

Just read a feed in regards to MS closing the Beta after 2.5 million downloads. There was a report MS has left the download open due to the fact of the heavy download upon its release. So if you have not got it yet return to MS and download it. Traffic may still be heavy but persevere
