PC fails to recognize CD and DVD

by OGKhan - 1/17/09 5:13 AM In reply to: My PC stopped recognizing both my DVD and CD drives, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

90% Solution that has worked for 10+ years for me.
Check power supply connections.
Check all other connections to include any cards.
Check for driver updates.
If devices are not still recognized, reinstall one at a time and pay close attention to any lights activating.
If device light fails to activate, replace the device.
Did you replace either a power supply or motherboard and these device recognition situs appear?

Cables and drivers

by will_mansfield - 1/17/09 5:19 AM In reply to: My PC stopped recognizing both my DVD and CD drives, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

There are a number of reasons for your computer to stop recognising you optical drives; ranging from corrupt registry files to loose cables.

First you best of going into device manager. I usually right click on "My Computer" and go to "Manage" then select "Device Manager". There should be a selection on the right-hand-side that says "DVD/CD-ROM Drives". If you expand this we can see the state of your drives. Double clicking on a drive will give you its properties, and you may find that the drives have been disabled or need the driver reinstalling. If this is the case the driver properties window will inform you of this.

However if you find that there are no "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" in the device manager then it is likely that a cable has come loose. You may think that you have no moved you computer so how could this have happened. Well it happens surprisingly often, I put it down to gremlins. So you're going to need to crack open your computer. Many people use wires to conduct static away from you hands whilst working with computers insides, but I find hugging a radiator and making sure I not wearing any clothing that is prone to static build up works just as well.

Open your computer by undoing a few screws at the back, the big ones usually not the little ones near the fan. And you'll usually have to slide the case off. If you look at the back of the DVD/CD-ROM drives and make sure the cables are in tight on the back and on the motherboard. You might find they seam very tight already and think you have done nothing, but you make well find your CD drives working when you next boot up.

Drives doing a disappearing act..

by k9fe - 1/17/09 5:43 AM In reply to: My PC stopped recognizing both my DVD and CD drives, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

More likely than not the drives are chained (master/slave on the same cable) and this is fine. However the motherboard end of the cable probably looks correctly seated but is not. I have had cable creep cause problems also. Carefully reach in as not to disturb any other cabling and remove the connector to the cable associated with the mystery drives from the motherboard and re-seat it. Be gentle but firm and while you are at it check the other connectors on the motherboard for fully inserted cable connectors. The reason for removing it rather than just pressing on the connector is to WIPE the contacts in the connector with the re-seating action. This can clean possible oxidation from the pin/socket that can also cause the drives to vanish.

If you do not feel confident about this simple procedure, ask a techie friend to do this while you hold the light for them. Once you see it done you will be able to accomplish it the next time it happens.

Good luck, Mike

PS. Be sure you computer is OFF and preferably unplugged when you do this repair.

Re-install your drivers.

by Redbeard46 - 1/17/09 5:51 AM In reply to: My PC stopped recognizing both my DVD and CD drives, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The same thing happened to me. Doing a system restore never helped, and I was pulling out my hair. I went to my manufacturers web page, grabbed the updated drivers, re-installed them, and it seems to have done the trick for me. Also, if your computer came with specific Cd/DVD burning software, you might want to try Re-installing that too. Sometimes manufacturers will require certain software (that came with the computer)be installed for the drive to operate normally.

DVD-CD Drives

by jwbashura - 1/17/09 5:54 AM In reply to: My PC stopped recognizing both my DVD and CD drives, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Before you take it to an expensive store for repair here are a few things to check out on your own. (1) Make sure you check that all cables-ribbons are attached and not loose on these items. (2) go to your My Computer and see if they are listed there, if so right click on eject to see if it will eject. If they are not listed in My Computer check to see if they are Listed in your system under Device Manager. If not listed there you should check the Bios to see if they are Listed there. I hope this is of some assistance for you. Good Luck Jim

1.Check the power connection in the pc to make sure the dvd drive power is plugged in correctly, then check that the CD Rom Drive is plugged in correctly.
2.Check the flexible cable connecting the dvd rom and cd rom are fixed correctly .
3Check the Termination on dvd rom it could set to master, slave or cable select.note neither the dvd rom or cD ROM SHOULD BE SET THE SAME WAY.
4. the Dvd rom is set master then cd rom should be set slave so that they work well. Thank you

Could be the CD drive or the DVD drive

by grmertz - 1/17/09 6:02 AM In reply to: My PC stopped recognizing both my DVD and CD drives, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I would open the system and asuming that both drives are on the same ribbon cable, unplug the ribbon cable from one of the drives. There are jumpers on the drives alongside of the ribbon cable connector and one drive would be set as master and one drive set as slave. I would unplug the master drive first and see if the slave drive works. If it does not work, remove the cable form the first drive and then set the second drive for slave and plug the cable into it and test that drive.

by mjones2758 - 1/17/09 6:14 AM In reply to: My PC stopped recognizing both my DVD and CD drives, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have this problem often. I have a Possessed Compaq Presario that used to run Windows ME but has been upgraded to Windows XP. I find that if I go to device manager and delete the 2 drives then reboot Windows will find them and they will work for a while

CD not workiing

by kaufmansteve173 - 1/17/09 6:15 AM In reply to: My PC stopped recognizing both my DVD and CD drives, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Recently my daughters CD player stopped working so I had the same problem. Hers would not even open the drawer and when the PC was turned on there was no access light that came on so power was my first thought. I reseated the power cable and all was well. You don't say if you think it is a power problem or not so I started here. If reseating the cable had not worked I would have taken a volt meter to the power plug to see if the voltage was present. If not then it would most likely have been a bad power supply.

If not a power problem and the drawer will open but your PC just doesn't read the cd then since you say it affects both DVD and CD I would suspect either a bad logic cable or try to reseat the connections on the motherboard and both drives.

If all of that fails I would think you do have a bad motherboard but one last thing you could try would be to swap your hard drive cable and the cable to the CD. ONce you have done this put a bootable CD in the drive and see if your PC will boot. If so it really does sound like a motherboard problem.

pc stopped recognizing cd/dvd

by jwhenderson1234 - 1/17/09 6:20 AM In reply to: My PC stopped recognizing both my DVD and CD drives, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

put the xp disk in go to device manager probably have question marks on the dvd/cd drives - click on them and update drivers from the xp disk. A simple start without having to take it to the shop. Hope it works! If not, try the roll back the driver option.

drivers stop recognizing programs/printers, etc....

by Bobemakk - 1/17/09 6:32 AM In reply to: My PC stopped recognizing both my DVD and CD drives, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I don't have the answer, but a comment. If you recall, Windows XP when it first came out had mega problems. There was service pack 1, then 2 and now 3. I just bought a new Dell Inspiron 530. The computer works fine but Vista is now taking over as the next operating system not recognizing other programs. I wonder when service packs will come out for Vista. It is just like the FDA putting drugs on the market with side effects, now Microsoft has side effects with Vista, and we have all the aggravation.
