First, try restoring DVD/CD-ROM drivers by opening the control panel and open system, click on hardware tab, click device manager and look for DVD/CD-ROM drives and try to re-install drivers or:
Second, use Sony VAIO recovery wizard to re-install DVD/CD-ROM drives or you may need to do a system recovery to re-install factory drivers.
You don't have to recover the hold system. Hope this helps!
Hi. I am not a computer genius like most on this site but I had the same problem twice with a new HP Pavilion laptop twice after "automatic updates" by HP. When I did online tech support, they were able to correct the problem. If you updated your PC you may have lost the drivers. Tech support for your PC may be able to correct the problem. Good luck!
The same thing has happened to my computer, and still does everytime i connect my ipod. Not even the manufacturer could solve this problem without taking my pc for two weeks!!! I found in internet the way to do it everytime and keep my computer with me. It only takes a minute. You must erase the upper and lower filters from the next address:
Write regedit at start in windows. Then go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Erase the filters (if there is only one donīt worry). Restart your computer and you are all set! Easy huh?
Hope this works with your pc and solve the problem.
Best regards
Have you tried removing the upper and lower filters from the registry? This sometimes works when you have a yellow mark in device manager and cannot read the discs, Try the following:
1: Click "start" and then "run"
2: type in "Regedit" into the box
3: Then open up the following folders from the left hand side starting with "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
4: Then "System"
5: Then "CurrentControlSet"
6: Then "Control"
7 Then Class
8: Now locate and click the folder:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
9: Two settings on the right hand side of the screen may say "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters", Right click on each one and press DELETE and click YES.
10:Exit the registry and restart the machine.
Try booting to a bootable cd and if it does then it is a software issue. Check the bios too to see if the cdrom drives are shown.
Hi Gary,
I lost my D & E drives (way back) when I tried to install Windows Player 8 on my new Dell 8100 with Player 9 already installed!
How dumb can a person get, you might ask? (I didn't like the look of the player and the accuracy of stop & rewind, etc.) Excuse me!
Anyway,I downloaded Windows Player 8 and when I tried to install it, an error message came up that, 'Windows has found a newer version of the program already installed'. I accepted that news but when I went to find the Windows Player 9, none was listed and goodbye to D and E.
You wouldn't think that could happen!
This is what I call 'Microsoft Punishment'. When you do something that offends the MS Version you're using, it screws up something on your computer to remind you who's BOSS! No retro allowed unless you know the trick to it. I sure didn't.
Well, I did find a link on google that some kind person posted to get D & E back. I clicked on it and they came back. It was a long time ago but it was scarey to screw up a new computer.
I know a tech will help you if they haven't already.
Everything will be okay.

Gary,
Your problem could be 2 things
1. You have a glitch with your XP Operating System, you did'nt state whether HOME or PRO.
or
2. You unstalled some type of burning software which took out some drivers.
I had a similar problem, I have a Acer Aspire 9425WSMi running a Pentium 4 (2 Ghz) Duo Core Processor, running Vista Home Premium, To fix my problem i had to re-install the operating system, Hope this helps you.

My HP with Vista stopped recognizing the dvd player after QT was installed. Apparently QT is an Apple program and was thought to be needed to view certain videos. After I uninstalled QT, my dvd started working again.
Have you tried looking for help at Microsoft's help and support site? I had a similar problem with my floppy drive a couple of years ago. It stopped working and disappeared from My Computer. The solution that worked for me can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812489. If I remember correctly there was some reason to believe that the problem may have originally been caused by a ZoneAlarm update. Once I made the registry changes recommended by microsoft everything worked fine.
I had the exact same problem after experiencing a power surge. You need to reset the BIOS to its default state and clear VRAM.
To reset the BIOS-
- During system startup, enter the setup (F2 on most machines)
- When the setup screen appears, press the Alt + F keys at the same time to load the factory defaults.
- A beep will sound to indicate that the factory defaults have been loaded.
- Reset the time and date if needed.
- Change the secondary drive 0 setting to auto.
- Ensure that all USB listings are set to 'enable' or 'on'.
- Exit setup and save changes.
To clear the VRAM -
- During system startup, enter the setup (F2 on most machines)
- Press the 'caps lock', 'scroll lock' and 'num lock' keys to light up all three keys.
- Press 'alt' + 'E' at the same time.
- Press 'alt' + 'F' at the same time.
- Exit setup and save the changes.
This work4ed for me on a Dell PC.
Hope it works for you too.
Gary,
You may need to see if "lower filter" or "higher filter" are contained in your registry. I had the same problem after uninstalling a CD/DVD burning program. Go to the link below to fix the problem. It's easy and worked for me.

Is your CD and DVD drives are connected with the same data cable?? if this so then check this problem with the replacement of the data cable and if isnt then check ur CD or DVD drives on Bios with the new data cable... if ur CD and DVD drives are shown in bios then u have to reinstall the windows... it think it will help have a nice day....
Assuming you've changed nothing there can be a lot of reasons for this. If the drives are IDE and jumpered incorrectly you can get strange things happening in Windows XP. If the drives show in the BIOS then it would seem the are connected correctly. If there are two devices connected to the IDE cable, assuming these are IDE and not SATA drives, try jumpering to CABLE SELECT. Sometimes the device does not show, but if you insert a CD with Autoplay it will play it. Sometimes a cable works loose, so check these after turning the system off. Check that Device Manager and My Computer both don't show the drive. Perhaps the Operating System has been corrupted somewhere and you may need to repair or reinstall if you find you can boot to the CD drive. If the drives are both on the same IDE cable, remove the device connected to the middle connector, check that the remaining device is set to cable select, and reboot. If the remaining device is detected correctly it would seem that something is amiss with the removed device or the IDE cable. If the problem lies somewhere in the software this will need to be narrowed down, but in any case if one of the devices can be made to work it may be better to leave the other disconnected until you can fully resolve what's going on here.
I hope you can understand my Dutch, go to uitvoeren and than ms.config., and in services is your problem, second way of solution set your computer back on a date that the stations were still be recognist by your computer,

If you are using ROXIO, that is usually the case. Just simply delete Roxio and install NERO, its user friendly or any other DVD/CD copy software except Roxio.
