Trying to listen on Ubuntu

by kiminigin - 1/13/09 9:05 PM

How can I pull the BOL podcast onto an Ubuntu machine? Right know I'm working with Listen, but if there's a better podcast grabber I'd like to know.

Note: I just want the podcast. For some reason the flash player on the blog crashes Firefox and the download doesn't work.

Ubuntu Podcatchers

there are a range of good podcatchers out there, I used gPodder for a while but did not sync to the ipod correctly, so i used gtkpod. Both you can download with other podcatchers in ubuntu by opening the terminal and typing

apt-chache search podcast

and you will get list of all the avilable podcatchers on ubuntu, then choose which one you want then type

sudo apt-get install (software_name)

and it will download to your computer.

Podcatchers

If you just want a good podcatcher and don't care so much about synching to the ipod, gPodder works great for me. I haven't actually tried to use it to sync with an iPod though, so on that issue YMMV

Why use extra software?

by KevinDupuy - 1/14/09 12:37 PM In reply to: Trying to listen on Ubuntu by kiminigin

Others have recommended separate software to listen to BOL, but why, when Ubuntu comes with a music player that has a podcast functionality built in?

Open up the music player, called Rhythmbox. There should be a podcasts section (it's been a while since I've used Ubuntu), simply take the RSS feed and subscribe in there.

If you find that you don't like Rhythmbox (as I did), there is another music, movie, and podcast player available. Try Banshee from Novell, at www.banshee-project.org (there are simple installation instructions there). It's the default media player for openSUSE, and it is an amazingly slick application.
