Hi gang; I, like many, have a "hybrid" house with both Windows machines and Macs running. I'd like to get my hands on a NAS solution that supports Time Machine and will serve as the storage location for all my media (photos, videos, etc.). Redundancy is important; I've had a disk failure in the past that I'll probably never fully recover from.
Initially, I was leaning towards the Drobo/Droboshare solution due to its supposed ease of use and scalability; however the price makes me gag. Recently I've been reading a bit about the Thecus N3200PRO and N3800 (basically the same, but the N3800 looks like it has HDMI out and a remote so that it can be hooked up directly to a HDTV). Does anyone have any comparison advice or pros/cons of going one route (drobo/droboshare) over the other (N3200PRO or N3800)? Any experience with the Thecus kit?
I have the M3800 and have been having continuous problems without resolution from support. 1. Cannot copy or save files 1-gig or larger to server which means no PC backup to server and no uploading movies to server. Two backup programs, Ghost & Migo both time out waiting on server. Downloaded a Beta firmware upgrade at suggestion of Thecus support, did not resolve problem. M3800 does not recognize mp3 files, the most prevelant audio format on the planet. I did, at the suggestion of support download a third party module that is suppose to recognize mp3 files. Mp3 files now are displayed in itunes (Unit supports an iTune Server, have not realized the benefit of that since you cannot transfer files to or from the server in iTunes) but the server still will not recognize mp3 and play them. File transfer speed is incredibily slow. I am ready to remove my three 1-teribyte HD's and place them in a Media PC. The headaches, so far are non ending with the Thecus. What even more disapponting is that read many reviews about the M3800 prior to purchasing. What I am discovering is most reviews are "surface reviews" not in depth.
