It is amazing to set here and read "Vista is garbage", Vista crashes constantly, Vista is no better than Xp, and on and on it goes. The fact is that lots of these people posting these statements do not even own Vista and never have sat down at a Vista computer. They only know what they read. People as a whole do not like change. When XP came out, the very same things were said. I deal with computers on a daily basis and repair them each and every day. The truth is Vista is superior to XP if you have the hardware to run it. What are the negatives you hear about Vista? "It is a resource hog", & the "UAC in Vista is constantly nagging you". Both these statements are true. If you do not have sufficient Ram then don't even think of running Vista. The UAC in Vista can be turned off so that negative is a mute point. Upgrading an XP computer to Vista was a bad idea from the start, and that was Microsoft's fault. They should have never recommended that. IMO, if you have the proper hardware and a minimum of 2 GB of Ram, Vista is superior to XP. XP cannot do one thing better than Vista, and that is a fact.
Well jerome, I seriously think you should wait for windows 7.
One reason being that Vista is an awful system.
So i expect microsoft not to make the same mistakes with 7.
Besides if 7 is better you can always go for it when its out.
But, If you don't like 7, theres always the possibility of price cuts for vista.
Only thing is that ur old laptop should stick on.
I hope you already have a complete backup of ur data.
And why not consider an new MacBook Or MacBook Pro ???
I think they are way better if you have the cash.
But if your not into multimedia windows make sense.
Hope you find it useful.
Vista has like motorcycles..you either like it or you don't. This does not take into account those who change there computers OS just to have the latest and greatest. I have come to believe that the relationship between VIsta and the new Windows 7 is a lot like the relationship between Millennium and XP. That is XP finished what Millennium started.
No matter what the folks at MS tell me I always take it with a grain of salt. Each time they introduce a now program like an Operating System they claim it is better, faster, safer, etc. The bgest advice I can give you is:
1. if it ain't broke don't fix it. As long as you do not need to change it don't. When you have a real reason like new software requires it, then consider changing it.
2. Remember that all the same steps you have made in the past you will have to do again. Also there may be new graphic, device, and other things to consider also.
So it is simple....If you don't have to change then don't. I will wait till at least the first service pack befor I change to any new system.

Everything I've heard about Vista screams out "don't do it". Here's my suggestion. Wait for Windows 7, assuming it comes out on time. The early reviews for Windows 7 are not as bad as for Vista. If your PC can hold out, that would be best. If you have to buy a new PC, look for your old Windows 2000 disks and load that onto the PC until Windows 7 comes out. Of course, you could always install Linux instead, but a lot of your old PC software would not run without adding an emulator.
A 7 year old machine running W2K is past its useful life expectancy. You are living on borrowed time as it is. Waiting for Windows 7, which has an unknown date now, and subject to MS delays, is only inviting disaster. Plan for the worst and hope for the best. Try and find an inexpensive XP machine to use until Win7 comes out, even a Vista machine.
The one thing you don't want, is for your current machine to die, lose your data, and then be forced into a decision.
I dont find Vista user friendy. It also consumes a lot of speed and space of your PC. Use XP its the best Windows based OS or the OS you are currently using. I think you should wait for Windows 7.......
My free and honest recomendation is WAIT. Wait for a while, maybe a few months after to release the first edition. Microsoft had a good reputation, and always had a lot of bugs to modify after to lunch a new version of windows. Your actual version like WIN 2000 and XP R2 is some stable. If your interest is a new hardware, go out to the store and look the best hardware, don't look in OS, because you don't see other thing more than WIN VISTA. If you bought a new PC; trying to install your version of WIN 2000 or XP. Actually, I mix between WIN and Leopard. I have 22 years working PC and windows, from DOS, WIN 3.1 and actually XP; and I've see anything, good and bad season of OS, and no one OS is the unique or best option, but you always can mix the best of each OS. Looking in your garage, may be you have two cars, the familiar car and the personal car (maybe an sport car) or the other side a all terrain and the city car. But, I hope you follow your feeling. Thanks and enjoy.
J think from my own experience that the Windows Vista is crap so you should either use the Vista until the Windows 7 comes or you can use the beta version of Windows 7 until the original version comes. J personal dislike the Windows Vista but J like the Windows 7 so it is up to you.
why you dislike Windows Vista and like Windows 7? That would be very helpful for anybody considering the switch.

Abetter bet is to buy a MAC with an Intel chip in it. You can partition it,
install Windows in the second partition using the MAC Bootcamp software
that comes with OSX 10 (Lepoard). Then you have both an Apple computer and Windows.
Like WinXP before it, Vista had a little bit of a rough start mostly due to 3rd party driver issues, but most of that has been worked out. As a general rule, wait for Microsoft products to hit SP1 (the first Service Pack), if you want most of the bugs and usability issues fixed. I bought a laptop with Vista SP1 this summer and (once I removed all the manufacturer-installed crapware) it's been working wonderfully. Now is a good time to get Vista or XP, Win7-SP1 probably won't be ready for a while.
get windowa 7 beta now it is awesome !
Wait for Windows 7.
Hi,
If I'm going to be in your situation, I would wait windows7. I will support my old system with some extra RAM, if it seems to be slow and waiting windows7 is worth and better than Vista.
