Just say NO to Vista

by Marsdave - 1/9/09 9:35 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've been using various operating systems since the 1960s (mainframes, mini's, PC's, and simulators), and Vista is the worst OS I've ever seen. About a year ago, I used it for 6 months on a brand new computer with the OS pre-installed, applied all the maintenance, upgraded to a higher version, etc, then purchased a different, customized PC with Windows/XP. I would have converted the Vista PC to XP, but the vendor said it was impossible because XP wouldn't support some of the hardware chips.

I don't remember all the problems I had or even a fraction of the problems (other than being on the phone with Microsoft for 11 hours during an attempted upgrade - even the tech was mystified). I just remember that it was so stupidly designed, it was almost unusable for me except for the most basic functions. I constantly had the feeling that Vista had been designed by terrorists.

It was a ripoff, and all I now have is an unusable computer and missing patches of hair. I wasted hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours.

I didn't tweak the OS or do anything "funny". Everything Microsoft was out of the box purchased at a store, or downloaded from the MS website.

If all you do is e-mail and surf the web, it might be just fine for you.

Vista- OK

by msgale - 1/9/09 10:21 PM In reply to: Just say NO to Vista by Marsdave

I have been using Vista for about a year, mostly 32 bit, now 64 bit with no problems. Mainly, I run Visual Studio, MS Office, Maya, and Adobe Creative Suite CS4. On Windows 2008 Sever, I run MS Office, Visual Studio and SQL Server 2008, again with no problems. I also "cut my teeth" on old mainframes starting with MCP 8 on a B5500.

Old Vista vs today's Vista

by rockinbaja - 1/9/09 11:45 PM In reply to: Just say NO to Vista by Marsdave

I purchased my Vista OEM computer in June 2007 and screamed everyday I used it, for months. Then SP1 came out and now no problems at all. To me, Vista combines the power of Windows XP with the easy, user-friendly UI that was Windows 98.

I would recommend giving your "unusable" Vista computer a second, updated try.

If your pc ran vista, I can not think of a reason it would not run XP.

I honestly think your vendor was a con artist.

Would be interested if you could go back to your vendor and ask for a full explanation of why you could not, in detail do what you asked, and then come back and post it here.

SP1 plus latest Drivers ... a must for Vista

by cnetmessageman - 1/17/09 2:10 PM In reply to: Just say NO to Vista by Marsdave

Similar experience to Rockinjaba with Dell Dimension 531 system purchased in July 2007, although not as "rocky". With 2GB of RAM, average dual core CPU (AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+), and a average dedicated video card performance should be fine with latest driver updates and SP1 installed. Of course, I shutdown the Sidebar which was an unnecessary resource hog.

You can also avail yourself of excellent free utility called, Thoosje's Vista Tweaks, to optimize a number of features and eliminate some annoyances.

Yes, there is a bit of a learning curve but given the power of the Search Bar in the START Menu and other new features, there is a much to like if you take the time.

While Windows 7 will probably be a far more polished version of Vista, it is inaccurate to place Vista in the same category as ME.

wait till June or July if possible

by justchuck69 - 1/9/09 9:39 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

wait till June or July if possible because about that time micro$oft will be including a update to windoze 7 with all pc

Vista is not bad now as they have fixed most of it but windoze 7 is reported to work good on 512 of ram and vista is still a bit of a resource hog especialy when compared to windoze 7

so if your need for a new computer is real bad then get a machine now but if you can wait a bit then try too
hope this helps you
good luck and take care

Windows &

Hey systems are good enough to last until windows 7 pops up. However consider this. Windows new release will be buggy partly because it will be "tuned" to the new hardware on the market. Do you have new hardware? Then maybe you want vista. I would speculate an old machine will require some upgrades to run vista and/or Windows 7. So the real questions is will you work on your hardware bugs while Windows 7 works on theres' ? Just Imagine running windows 98 on a current machine. Now imagine putting Vista on your old Amiga machine..??? Doesn't make much sense.....

she is thinking of buying a new computer

by justchuck69 - 1/9/09 10:35 PM In reply to: Windows & by combatbob

"My 7-year-old computer running Windows 2000 Pro is on its way out and I’m ready to buy a brand-new system to start fresh with new hardware and operating system."

so i assume the new computer will have new parts ( hardware ) and he would be able to check it out at a brick and mortar store or look at the specs on the web
the original post did not say anything about an upgrade of the computer

vista is the beta of windoze 7 and it is much leaner then vista and should have most of the bugs worked out even the beta of windoze 7 is better then vista is

In my opinion...

by Ed-duh-win - 1/9/09 10:08 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I would tell you to wait. Why?

If you have managed to survive with a Windows 2000 for this long, then you certainly can hang in there for another year. If you bought a system now, yes, you will have it right now, but then you've got to consider that when you want to upgrade to Windows 7, you'll have to go through the upgrade process every time the computer needs a reformat. It does get tedious after a while, so I just recommend that you get a system with Windows 7 preloaded.

Of course, if the Win2k machine is on the verge of collapse, its a whole another story...

P.S. Vista or 7, either is great for a new machine - you can't really go wrong with either. But I, as a beta tester of Windows 7, consider Windows 7 a more refined Vista and will be going straight to Windows 7 given the opportunity.

WAIT!!! for Windows 7

by JiMiZnHB - 1/9/09 11:17 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

WAIT!!! As a Certified Technician, The ONLY other Microsoft OS I have ever run into since Windows 286/386 that was as BAD as vista was Windows ME!!! vista CRASHES ON Every Computer I have ever Worked on, I have made some of them Stable enough to USE, but vista in general is nothing but JUNK.

I will be WELL Worth the WAIT for Windows 7!!!

Just keep Windows 2000 running for another 9 Months, YOU will be VERY HAPPY YOU DID!!!

.... excuse me !!!?

by Merlin_Magii - 1/17/09 12:29 PM In reply to: WAIT!!! for Windows 7 by JiMiZnHB

I personally agree with your comments on Vista. However ..... what has me gasping for breath is the dismissive ... "wait for Windows 7" .... how in the name of all that's sacred, will this help IF users of the BETA 7 are to be believed that Windows 7 is merely a facelifted Vista? So don't install Vista - wait for Vista ? Hmmmmmm ! I'm hanging onto XP till it drops ! After that, I guess I will have been forced into the Linux camp. I still have clients running Win2K Prof VERY successfully !

Win 7 vs Vista

by rockinbaja - 1/9/09 11:21 PM In reply to: Should I wait for Windows 7 or move on to Vista now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Do Vista now.

Windows 7 (I am a Beta tester) is built on the Vista platform. Prior to SP1, Vista was a pain in the neck, but now it is a smooth operating system with an easy and aesthetically pleasing UI. Vista works well with all forms of media and social networking and setting up a home network with other Vista computers takes only seconds!

Windows 7 will have some really neat improvements over Vista, but at its core, Windows 7 is still Vista. Upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista should have few if any glitches for both your computer hardware and any application software that runs with it.

Going from Windows 2000 to Vista is a big jump, especially for 2000 software applications that may not function in Vista, not to mention the various peripheral hardware drivers (printers, camera, cellphone, etc.) you will need to update. Do it now with Vista and you should have a very smooth and enjoyable upgrade experience a year from now.

No, your not a beta tester

by link48010 - 1/9/09 11:45 PM In reply to: Win 7 vs Vista by rockinbaja

Kind of hard to be a beta tester when there is no "beta" that's been officially released yet. Currently Build 7000 of Windows 7 is still considered "Pre-Beta" and hasn't been released out for testers yet, unless that is you thieved it off a pirating site or something.

That is not correct...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 1/10/09 12:04 AM In reply to: No, your not a beta tester by link48010

There has been an ongoing 'beta' program with pre-beta builds for specially-selected individuals, including myself, and build 7000 is officially Beta 1, which if you read the forum sticky you'll find was released to the general public today.
