Use disk cleanup

This will however keep the latest restore image and delete the rest. This should recover a lot of disk space. Follow the following steps. Disk cleanup does not delete the restore images by itself, you gotta do it yourself...it just gives you he option.
Go to 'Computer' and right click on C: drive. Go to 'Properties' and click on 'Disk Cleanup'. It will ask 'Which files to cleanup'. Click on 'Files from all users on this computer' and elevate to administrative user (you should be logged in as administrator). It will now check for files to delete. When it is done and you see a window displaying available options, click on the tab 'More options'. Under this you will find 'System Restore and Shadow copies'. Click on the 'Clean up..' button and confirm. If there are lots of files then it will take some time to delete.
Also, do you have hibernate on? If you do have it on, it takes about 2gb space in vista. This can easily be deleted by disk cleanup, just tick mark the box next to this and cleanup. This will however turn off hibernate feature and if you want to use hibernate then you will have to switch it on.

You have Bill Gates and Windows to blame for eating up space
on your C: Drive. When you install a new program
(even if you direct it to be installed on a drive other than C:)
there are .DLL files and some other files written to the
C drive and even if you uninstall the program there are usually
some files left in the C Drive.Also other data files are written to your C drive with no option to write to another drive.
Over time, your C drive just keeps getting bigger and bigger and
your computer slower and slower.
I have never had it explained to me why Windows has to do this.
If all files needed to run the program were installed in the
program directory it would be a simple matter to delete
all the files if you wished to uninstall it and also if you
wished to make an image of the C: Drive for backup, you would
find all your installed programs would work with the backup.
But no one ever said Windows was user friendly.

I feel there are much easier and significant tasks to perform prior to looking at this, keep it simple and homogeneous (multiple machines / os's), installing quality apps, version <= n -1, separation of os, apps and data OR use one big bucket - note redundancy.
Reliability > performance.
Do you have a specific instance you would like to illustrate as a test case?

i'd like to help you with your problem here.
Well, there may be any of the reasons in the whole world of operating sytems to get your hard drive a hard time and you as well. i'd suggest few of the possibilities and you can get rid of your problem hopefully.
PROBLEMS
1: starting from the softwares part, you may have some malicious softwares installed by you that you use and may not know about.
2: next your windows xp as you mention may also be infected with certain keylogger-trojans that use any of your personal datas for a hacker. also, which may not be detectable to your antivirus if it's outdated. evenif you used a better firewall, you are not protected as hackers break into practically "anything".
3: if not any of those mentioned above; you should be using application softwares used for downloading(Bit-comet, Limewire).
4: if not softwares mentioned above then yo must be using some hard drive freezing soft wares like (Deep - freeze).
5: well, even if not the softwares of any kind as i mentioned above, then you must have a faulty hard drive that has been infected with some sort of application virus that restores your xp configurations.
SOLUTIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
1: first of all, backup your precious datas at once in another storage medias.
2: if you could then download even the free version of (AVG 8.0/ SYMANTEC) and as a must (tuneup utilities -08/09) and uninstall all of your softwares thatyou mentioned and try what i said.(tuneup-utilities-1-click maintenence will work)
3: if not all of these disconnect your internet connectivity to your pc and install win-xp sp2(remember sp2) 2002. and then format all your partitions after you backed them up.
4: even if you do not want any of these ways then do ask me frankly

When you delete the files from your hard drive, all you are really doing is moving them to the trash bin. You need to empty the trash to remove the files from your disk and free up space.

Clean up

I personally prefer the Comodo Firewall but if you're using the latest ZA firewall, it should be ok.
I also prefer AVG antivirus (free.grisoft.com)
I like SpywareBlaster which works very well.
I wouldn't use Spybot of windows defender.
I suggest to move all documents, music, videos to partition D:
To clean your hard drive from junk files try Ccleaner available from www.ccleaner.com
Another good cleaner is the WiseCleaner available from www.wisecleaner.com
To defrag your hard drive I suggest Smart Defrag -- at www.iobit.com.

Just Defragment It

If your computer's built in defragmenter fails to defragment the hard drive saying that it doesn't have enough space then try defragmenting it with a downloaded software Auslogics Disc Defrag which is free. Hope this helps you.

I ran disk cleanup to remove all but the latest restore point, I now have 210 Gbytes free, therefore I suggest that run disk cleanup and remove all but the lastest restore point.
Eating up hard drive problem

I don't know if this is your problem but I will tell you what I found out when it kept happening to me.
I noticed you have "Zone Alarm". I had a 160GB hard drive and kept getting messages that I am running out of hard drive space. I checked everywhere and could not find anything. I ran across a program that would show me everything that is taking up space on my hard drive. It is called "Sequoia View". It showed up files that are hidden and I would not have found without it. It showed that system restore was taking up 132GB. I then saw in a forum that some other people were having the some problem with "XP & Zone Alarm". One of the replys had a link to a "Zone Alarm" forum where other people were having the same problem. I wish I could remember the link, but maybe somebody on here can. It showed that "Zone Alarm" was setting a restore point every 3 minutes of every day for 3 months. At the end of the article it stated the only thing I could do was to uninstall "Zone Alarm" and wait for an update to fix the problem. I uninstalled "Zone Alarm" and had to manually delete every restore point I could. The problem went away and I have not had the problem again. I hope this will help you in determining what your problem might be.

well Marie, that's an every struggle to keep your C drive lean and clean, if you want to run your pc as fast as she can. you don't say how large this drive or drives are, nowadays 500 GB are peanuts and are very cheap per Gbyte. that's one point. another is get all you data from your systemdrive (C) to this new (D) drive of yours. if you do not have a second drive in you pc, get one and call it Data Drive or My Data. so when you get a crash and want to restore your old reliable system back, please make a backup of C on your new D. check if it does, this is very critical. get a program called Tuner Utilities or Auslogic Boostspeed to clean your C drive and system registry. there is a rule that says that you need at least 25% space free to run a diskdefragmenter. that's all, have fun Marie and best wishes for 2009. I suggest You to check your memorycards,maybe not enough space,
and I can recommend not to use so much security programs.
try to use just 1 antivirus software with Internet Security,would be enough.
otherwice You can clean and defragment the drivers just open each with right click and than You can see what to do.

I had the same problem with a Dell laptop computer. It was an integral fault. I had to uninstall the whole thing and re-install it. Contact your computer manufacturer and they will direct you to a patch to stop the leakage. Good luck
