I suggest you try spacemonger. try ver. 1.4. I suggest you eliminate partition d. it serves no purpose at all. second partition is on the same drive. if the drive fails, the second partition will be toasted too. furthermore, if the c partition is getting full, the space on d will be able be easily be used. you have to re-partition the drive. how big is your total drive?
I had 10% free on C: and 53% free space on D:. So I just ran Partition Magic and enlarged C:, borrowing 4 gig of space from D:.
Also, for old files, backup files, most music, and old photo albums, I transfer them to a large external hard drive. This HD is left turned off most of the time, to extend its life.
Well, I think it is best if she backup data and re-format. Not just it will get rid of the space problem but it also will get rid of the junk that xp accumulate and make the machine faster!
Hi Marie,
I use a Program called SpaceMonger, a small Utility that shows where ALL the space on you hard Drive is Allocated.
It is a FREE Utility that Really Helps a Lot in situations like your. You can find it at
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spacemonger.html
with a Review.
Good luck ![]()
yes windoze updates do not clean up after themselves (well in windoze 7 and after sp2 in vista they will but not win xp yet) and you might be able to regain about 4 gb or so ( depends as many updates will have the update and a uninstaller but they might be in different folders)
don do the restore thing unless your comp is running good and i would just turn it off and then turn it back on ( a reboot might be necessary but i am not to sure about win xp)and that should net you another 3 to 4 gb (usually system restore will use up to 10% ( i think that is the default setting but if it has been changed it could be more))
what i find takes up most space on my drive is videos and the second is music
but like someone posted new hdd are getting pretty cheap 50 to 70 bucks for a 500 gb model here in canada
if you want to see the usage in a more visual manner try one of these tools as they color code the file types (ie vids will be purple and music green i think)first one is a portable app and both are made by the same company i think and both are free and also the portable app will not eat up any of your limited disk space

To who ever can use this:
http://www.returnilvirtualsystem.com/
I have been useing this and when I reboot anything that I had down loaded is gone. I got this from kim komando news letter.
It uses a virtual hard drive . I down load games and play them when im done I just reboot and they are gone.
and another good uninstaller is revo uninstaller. it hunts and removes all files connected to what ever you are uninstalling .
I hope these are of help to some one catlady9tails
THE IDEA OF USING A VIRTUAL-SYSTEM TO KEEP YOUR PC FREE OF ALL TYPES OF WASTE-WARE (which use-up free-space), IS SIMPLY GREAT! AND IT ALSO FREES A PC FROM THE NEED OF A FIREWALL.
PERHAPS ALL PCs (USED ON THE WWW/NET), SHOULD'VE HAD SUCH A VIRTUAL-SYSTEM INSTALLED BY THE MANUFACTURER BEFORE SALE.
__ ANOTHER SIMILAR WAY THAT I'VE FOUND TO PROTECT YOUR PC, IS TO SET IT UP WITH DUAL-BOOT Operating SystemS!
WITH TWO OSs, A PC CAN THEN HAVE TWO PROGRAMS OF WHICH NORMALLY ONLY ONE INSTALLATION CAN BE RUN (ON A SINGLE PC)! FOR EXAMPLE, YOU COULD HAVE TWO DIFFERENT MAJOR ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAMS, ONE ON EACH OS! THAT WAY, IF ONE OS PICKS-UP A BIT OF MALWARE, YOU CAN THEN REBOOT INTO THE OTHER/ALTERNATE OS AND USE IT'S INSTALLED ALTERNATE ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM TO CLEAN-UP THE DRIVE WHICH PICKED-UP THE BIT OF MALWARE. THUS, YOU'RE NEVER WITHOUT THE FULL USE OF YOUR PC, AND YOUR DOWN-TIME IS KEPT TO A MINIMUM.
SO I SUGGEST THE FOLLOWING...
INSTALL YOUR OS TWICE, (only once per partition). THEN INSTALL & RUN A VIRTUAL-SYSTEM ONLY ON JUST ONE OF THE TWO OSs, (the one which ends-up on drive C). THEN ALWAYS USE THAT OS WHICH IS ON DRIVE-C FOR WEB-SURFING, AND, ALWAYS TRY TO AVOID USING YOUR ALTERNATE/2nd OS FOR WEB-SURFING.
THEN THAT WAY, YOUR ALTERNATE OS SHOULD ALWAYS BOOT-UP & RUN LIKE NEW (FOR ANY IMPORTANT WORK)! (SO LONG AS YOU DON'T INSTALL MUCH POOR-WARE ON IT!)
to Good-PC.Guy, from catlady9tails
I am 82 and not that good a pc's. so how do you get a dual- boot?
ill need a blow by blow answer lol.
i am a trial and error person. that is how i got the VIRTUAL-SYSTEM
from kim komandow's news letters. I have gotten most of my protection from her ans so far great.
glad I could give some help to some one marge
WELL Cat9, I'VE ACTUALLY KNOWN ABOUT THE USE OF A VIRTUAL-SYSTEM SINCE ABOUT 2003 BUT, I'VE NOT NEEDED TO USE ONE BECAUSE I'VE BEEN JUST FINE WITH MY USE OF DUAL-BOOT SYSTEMS!
__ WITH HOPES THAT YOU KNOW YOUR WAY AROUND PCs EVEN MORE THAN IT SEEMS THAT YOU ALREADY DO...
__ TO GET SET-UP WITH A PC THAT CAN 'DUAL-BOOT' (boot to dual OSs), IT'S BEST TO FIRST INSTALL A FRESH HARD-DRIVE. THEN YOU CAN USE YOUR OLD HARD-DRIVE AS A SLAVE/SECONDARY HARD-DRIVE.
__ YOU'LL NEED (at least) YOUR CD-COPY OF YOUR OS, WHICH YOU CAN USE TO PARTITION YOUR PC'S NEW MASTER/MAIN HARD-DRIVE.
FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONs GIVEN BY YOUR OS INSTALLATION CD, DIVIDE YOUR MAIN HARD-DRIVE'S SPACE INTO (at least) TWO PARTITIONS BUT LEAVE ONE UNFORMATED, THEN GO AHEAD AND INSTALL YOUR OS ONTO A FINISHED PARTITION. THEN GO THRU THE INSTALLATION PROCESS AGAIN, EXCEPT INSTALL YOUR OS (this second time) ON THE PARTITION THAT HAD BEEN LEFT UNFORMATED DURRING THE FIRST OS-INSTALLATION.
NOW FROM THAT POINT FORWARD, YOU PROCEED AS HAVING DONE A (single) STANDARD OS INSTALLATION, AND THEN YOU'LL HAVE TWO SEPARATE OSs TO CHOOSE FROM, EVERY TIME YOU RE-BOOT.
__ HOPE THIS RUFF INFO DOES IT FOR YOU, CUZ IT'S MORE THAN I KNEW WHEN I FIRST TRIED IT!
__ IF YOU DO INDEED HAVE ANYMORE QUESTIONS, THEN PERHAPS I OR SOMEBODY ELSE WHO KNOWS ABOUT DOING DUAL-BOOT PCs, MAY FILL YOU IN.
AND IF THERE'S ANY REALLY EXPERIENCED TECHs OUT THERE WHO KNOW OF ANY SERIOUS DOWNSIDE TO HAVING A DUAL-BOOT PC, THEN PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT YOU FOUND, SO I CAN BE MADE AWARE BEFORE I CONTINUE-ON PRAISING (only) ALL THE ADVANTAGES!
to good-pc guy
thanks, I do know a guy that is a wizz on pc's. he built his own, and has gotten me out of trouble 3 times now . he has been working on them since he was 9. he is 29 now. he is a friend of my grand son in law.
the last time I screwed up, trying to reinstall . he fixed it.
he told me to back up the pc which I did. I found this in one of kim's news letter.(paragon drive) as windows backup system wouldn't put it on a cd.
I sent him a copy of the info you gave me and I asked him about it and how to go about it. I don't trust me to do it lol.
ill let you know what I find out if anything. thanks again cat9
Good-pc.GUY Dual boot pc is all well and good as long as you have no heavy attackers, but what about a rootkit that knocks out your bios, memory and you can't boot up. Even witht the pc turned off, what do you tell the people out there then, boot up and swithch over. Don't think so, obviously you haven't come across some heavy hitters, like microsoft , aol, yahoo, etc. When you catch them stealing believe me they are no happy campers, and out for destruction.
Just to keep you informed as we speak microsoft and a virtual rootkit will compete believe naxt month, forgot all the details but sure can find them again, so what do you tell the people when the virtual rootkit shows up in there computer in about a month, it will hop on your dual boot system and enjoy the ride, it will be ok as long as you don't get it mad like I do. Because I have already dealt with the vicious and destructive regular rootkit, and guess what won because you see the information I find out, doesn't stay on a hard drive, I am a little old fashion, find pen , paper, and mail works the best. Maybe there is a genious on the computer, but I will guarantee that I do know how to get information, and where to sent it. So why do you think they hammer me so hard.
Hello catlady9tails, I was the one who mentioned superantispyware, and wanted to thank you for your response. Was going to get back to you sooner but didn't get to it. See you found one that I was going to mention to you , been using returnil for couple years now. Like it seems to take care of most things. Also couple other programs going to mention to you are revo uninstaller, one reason like it is because it takes care of all the left over items like registry items broken fragments etc. all in one uninstall link to it is
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/revouninstaller.html
Another programs I use to test to see if my browser has been hijacked which comes in handy is trendmicro hijackthis link to it is
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html
You are using the one I like the most is returnil, just want to say reason I know most of these programs is I have no problem downloading, them and trying them, then I check to see what they do to my system. Also want to say way I operate is run just a basic operating system, and anything I want to save goes into an outside source such as hard drive, cdrom, flashdrive etc . Only run basic operating system and that is usually slimmed down, don't like most of what is in microsoft so put a few programs of my own in, in xp was running about 30% microsoft products with 90% free space, in vista which I had a year before anyone else since I was in beta, and trial period try for a year. I was running about 50% vista with about 80% free space and returnil for protection. But as we speak they have a new rootkit out which will run in total vitual enviroment and only load when you start your machine so that should be interesting. Since I just had reported a rootkit and it was in 3 states running 4 businesses and stealing informaion on the net. Needless to say they weren't too happy and as one guy put it it is a malicious piece of work. So again want to thank you for your response and glad to see you found returnil. You seem like a women who is intersted in maintaing her machine keep it up. I do what I do because I don't like to be bothered when I am browsing online, so I go after whoever, and since I test lot of products, I get hit a lot because there is a lot of junk in most of it. Thanks again for your response and keep up what you are doing maintain your computer
To: nightrome2004
Thanks for the response, it is good to know i am doing some thing right lol. I am 82 years old (as friends would say going on 12)
like you say i do a lot of checking out things and downloading to see if they are of use to me.
I just told my sister in law in AZ. about revo (she wants to uninstall Norton) and ccleaner to clean house on her pc.I have a Dell inspiron 530, I believe she has a dell also.her son advised her to replace norton with AVG (which I have also)for my virus and zone alarm for the firewall. She knows about cleaning the cache(prefetch) and disk clean, I also sent her info on updateing drivers etc. when I find something new and handy . . I got rid of adaware(lavasoft) it took too long.I kept spy bot search and distroy. and superantispy I like.
she asked me about running ccleaner, I just run it as it is but she has a bussness and files on her pc. . I said she might want to uncheck (recent documents)
well here I go blabbing on thanks again. I,m called cat lady as I have 11 as of now. hope to find home for some soon lol
Hello Again catlady9tails, will address every issue you have here maybe tomorrow, but for today, would want to say, a must get rid of norton, now not sure if revo uninstall will uninstall it. Won't get into much details today but for now, it may or may not because it is considered a virus. If it doesn't I will tell you how to delete it. Next response will tell you more on how to check and what to expect, but for now just run returnil, is your best option and will get into what you are trying to load and pro's and cons. One suggestion to your sister, is if she is doing business with her machine, DO NOT PUT IT ON HER OPERATING SYSTEM. Any outside source other than her operating system, and definitely get rid of norton, done away with that about 10 years ago.
