This is my setup. Samsung LN40A750R, DTV HD-H22 Receiver with RC64 remote control. After reading all these IR problems with Models 850, 750, etc. I tried the ENERGY SAVER option on TV turned OFF and DTV STB seems to be working fine with my remote control. its been working flawlessly for the past 20 minutes now. I want you to try it and post your comments. Thank you and kudos to these forum. Thanks CNET too!
My LN46A850 was delivered yesterday. I am happy to report no problems with the SA 4250 box or remote from cablevision.
Im happy to report i had my LN52A650 replaced with another one today and i'm having no issues with the IR and the IR with my Digital HD Box. It seems its only a issue with a certain percentage of them.
I have the Samsung 850 and a Bell expressvue 9242 hdtv pvr.
Same problem with the remote not working while the tv is on.
Didn't even realize the tv was the issue until I read it here.
I'll have to figure out something since I do like the tv.
I'm not surprised by any new issues now, i got my newly replaced Ln52A650 yesterday only to find out during the evening that some of backlight is brighter in 2 of the corners which is distracting during dark scenes in movies, tv shows etc. The only wy to make this issue seem less obvious is to turn the backlight down to 1 or 2, and then turn the brightness up.
Is there any one else finding this with Samsung sets?, and is there a firmware to fix this?, maybe the frequency needs adjusting i think???
I'm surprised you had an IR issue with the 650, glad that you got a replacement. I've seen this on a few LCD TVs, I have an 42" LG in my office a friend has a 46" Sony and my since returned Samsung 850 had similar issues The backlight bleeds through a dark or black screen inconsistantly. This really is only noticable when the room is dark and the image is dark. I tend to think that this is the main drawback with LCD technology I haven't seen the same issue with LED or Plasma TVs (LEDs have some other issues) which is why I am looking at a pioneer kuro as an expensive replacement for my departed 850.
Just wondering if all is still good with your LN46A850? I'm considering taking the plunge, however, after reading all the IR issues posts, I'm quite apprehensive. I will have the same cable box, the SA Explorer 4250HD you have, however, I can get a great price on the LNA860. My understanding is the two models are essentially the same TV, except for color, warranty, and an additional port. Most of the issues are directed at the LN46A850.
Does anyone have an LN46A860 with a SA Explorer 4250HD cable box that they are happy with?
Please advise - thank you.
I've surfed through several pages of this thread. I've owned an LN52A850 since September. Initially, it caused an IR problem with my DishNetwork 722 STB. I temporarily solved the problem by taping a piece of Post-it note sticky paper over the center IR port of the satellite box. You can get it in a variety of colors for those of you who want to color coordinate it with your room decor. ![]()
After a few weeks I mounted the STB inside an AV cabinet, which shielded it from the Samsung. I then used a Hot Link Pro IR repeater and tweaked the target so that my remotes would send signals to it but no interference from the TV.
Anyway, I've read where some people are giving up on this TV for other models or brands. IMHO, this IR thing is something that can be overcome with a bit of research and is not a reason to miss out on such a beautiful picture as what this TV offers. I'm glad I did not return mine.
Thanks for sharing...Mine as well have them come out and update the part as they've done for a couple others here.
To get this straight, what other hardware fixes have been tried for this IR interference issue? Just the back light inverters? I also have the LN52A850 with the IR inference. Fortunately, I do not have a problem with my Comcast HD box (Motorola DCH3200). It's my older Denon receiver that cannot be controlled for about 15-20 min.
I called Samsung and was told that they were sending me the firmware version 1004 "that will definitely fix the problem." Imagine the response I got when I told the young lady that I would bet her a new TV that it wouldn't. Who else can I talk to at Samsung that really knows what's going on?
By the way, why is it that my 850 (purchased from Circuit City on 12/20) has firmware version 1005 on it? and when registering this product online, serial number shows a build date of 12/30/08?
FWIW, I bought my LN46A850 online from BB and when I registered it showed a build date of 12/31/08. I, too, have FW 1005. Don't seem to have the IR issue with the Motorola QIP6416(FiOS)or a hodgepodge of bordering-on-ancient av equipment from Pioneer, Sony, Panasonic, and Harmon Kardon.
I bought a Hot Link Pro and will give it a try. I sure don't want to give up this fantastic TV picture, so I'll do what I have to for the remote to work with the cable box. By the way, according to the Hot Link Web site, all LCD and plasma TVs radiate a lot of IR noise. They have some interesting info at:
http://www.hot-link.com/pages/plasma_and_lcd_compatibility.cgi
Among other things, they say "Plasma and LCD monitors and TVs emit spurious Infrared (IR) pulses across a large spectrum of frequencies and at light wavelengths that are the same as those used for remote control transmissions. These monitor types interfere with a wide band IR remote control repeaters."
Take a look at their site.
If it will save you some time I've tried mounting the target at the location behind the TV as shown on the Hot Link website. I have plenty of RG6 coax and compression fittings to experiment with. It didn't work there on my LN52A850. The little blue "active" light on the Hot Link Pro glowed constantly, meaning it was always receiving an IR signal from the TV.
The little blue light is what I used to tweak the target. When the TV was cold I would turn it on and rotate the target barrel until the light went out. Then I'd operate a remote to see if it would still receive a signal. After moving the target to several locations and rotating it a bit I finally got it right.
I'm not sure what you mean by the TV being "cold" (or why it should be)?
Also, what do you mean by "rotating the target barrel?"
Anyway, thanks for the hints.
I tweaked my Hot Link Pro when the TV was cold (just turned it on after having been off for a long time) because the IR interference goes away after the TV is on for several minutes. If the TV was already warmed up I could not accurately tweak the target on the Hot Link Pro.
The target (also called the "eye" or "receiver") on the Hot Link Pro is a little round barrel shaped sensor. There is a window on one side of it. You can rotate the barrel so that the window does not "see" the IR interference from the TV but it will still receive commands from the remotes. It does not have to have a direct line-of-sight to receive commands from a remote.
Here's a link on the Hot Link website that shows the eye at the end of the cable. You can see the little dark colored window on the side of the barrel in some of the pics.
