Sansa e

by phoenix60 - 7/27/08 5:58 PM In reply to: mp3 player with bookmark by Twig319

I ended up buying the Sansa e250, even though it doesn't have bookmarking. I've been very happy with it so far. Not having bookmarking is a bit of a pain. I'm hoping that someday the manufacturer will get smart and provide this in a firmware update or that Rockbox will develop a version that works with the v2 models. Given all the problems I had with the Creative Zen V and Zen Micro, the Sansa is great! It has never frozen, needed resetting, etc. And it has a user-replaceable battery, which seems to be a rare feature these days. The radio also gets much better reception than the Creative products. I just have to remember to write down where I am in a book before I use the radio or transfer or delete new books.

best mp3 for audio books

by Twig319 - 7/27/08 6:42 PM In reply to: Sansa e by phoenix60

I find the Sansa e260 which I have is a pain. When I stop I have to go back to the beginning of the part...and how often can you stand that. Otherwise it is a fine device...but bookmarking is a must for me.

I too find iPod a brilliant platform for spoken word

by Toryhere - 11/20/08 3:04 AM In reply to: How to best rip CD audio books to an iPod by rikp

I agree with you that the steps you mentioned above, which I too discovered through playing around in iTunes, are more complex than they sound. iTunes is very easy to use, and iPods have great bookmarking capability.

I have to say that I don't listen to books as much as I do to drama, both from CD or from the BBC.

Somebody once told me that you can overcome the problem about forgetting which "disc" or episode you are on by using the playlist function, buit I haven't really bothered with that. SOmtime when I have a radio play with more than one chapter, I use a freeware tool which merges the files into one file and puts chapter marks in for each of the old files.

My iPod nano 3rd gen is a great little player which I have had for a year or so. It is light and much easier to operate when I am on the bus or in the train, than any other mp3 player I have ever used.

AudioBook Covers

by otrpu - 1/6/09 6:28 AM In reply to: How to best rip CD audio books to an iPod by rikp

I'm assuming that after I copy the cover .jpg to my desktop, then place it in iTunes Audiobook image area for the cover, that I have to leave it on my desktop for it to find it. Or after syncing does the cover .jpg end up in the iPod? Thinking a bit it must cause there's no communication tween puter and iPod after unhooking. Sorry for wasteing your time. DUH
Cheers,
otrpu

iPod graphics

by rikp - 1/6/09 8:59 AM In reply to: AudioBook Covers by otrpu

You don't even have to put the image on your desktop. If you find an image say in Amazon that you want to use, you can drag it from the screen to the graphic area in iTunes. It will accept it and put it in some secret area of it's own. If you do have it on your desktop, you may delete it after putting it into iTunes.

Sandisk E 380

by javajoe37 - 7/8/08 2:48 PM In reply to: Best Cheap Player Audio Books by nypl

Is this player compatable with Netlibrary and Overdrive and does it have bookmark capability?

Post 623 of 668

Yes and no

by phoenix60 - 7/8/08 2:52 PM In reply to: Sandisk E 380 by javajoe37

Yes, it's compatible with Overdrive. No, it does not have bookmarking.
NetLibrary? I don't know. My library is no longer offering NetLibrary. There would not be any problems with the files, but I'm not sure if the Sansa has full time stamping. Long books from NetLibrary can be a real pain without full time stamping.

MP3 SIMPLICITY, Cowon, OVERDRIVE etc.

by wwwgjsnet - 7/8/08 10:12 PM In reply to: Yes and no by phoenix60

I'm considering getting a COWON. Anyone have ANY bad report on it?
All I've seen so far are rave reviews. Is this player THAT good?

I hate proprietary software or being held hostage to any ONE computer or software scheme with ANY content, I convert everything into MP3 files for compatibility with ANY common player. For spoken word, I have trouble telling the difference in quality between 128, 64 and 32 KBS bit rates - so many of my files are 32 KBS. Although converting above content requires real time (with my technology at least) , this can be done when I am away doing something else away from computer.

Does anyone else feel as I do about Overdrive, Audible, etc, etc?

I've two Motorola M25 players. I paid $125 for the first and $25 for the second (now discontinued). Although the specs claim compatibility with one (1) GB SC memory cards it actually works fine with 2 GB cards (now very cheap). One nice thing about these players is that they run off of one AAA battery (alkaline or rechargeable). I also have a Sansa 8 GB player. All of above can be used with files on ANY normal computer without the hassle of having to install propitiatory software. Even though MP3 is not the most efficient with respect to memory required, this is much less of a problem today with cheap memory anyway. Does anyone feel as I do about Overdrive, Audible etc?

Just started using COWON D2

by sbogucki2002 - 7/9/08 7:02 AM In reply to: MP3 SIMPLICITY, Cowon, OVERDRIVE etc. by wwwgjsnet

And am pleased to say I think it's great.

I had a sansa e250r (BEWARE THE "R" - crapulized rhapsody/bestbuy conspiracy software), and got tired of searching through long book files when I lost my place. The D2's touch screen allows you to slide or simply point to where you think you were - and finding your place FAST. It also has bookmarks and lots of other features.

My only complaint is that my eyes are getting old, and it took me a while to get a font color that I could see consistently. If they could offer larger fonts and variations on the display for us old codgers.

As for overdrive - I thought their catalog was thin (I listen a LOT in my car.). Between OD and NetLibrary, I couldn't find much to be enthused about. I haven't tried Audible, because I haven't exhausted the library's books-on-CD yet, although sometimes it looks like I'm getting there. (You have to pay for Audible, right?)

Buy the COWON D2. I'm sure you'll be pleased too.

Cowan D2 - very, very happy

by tlhughes2 - 7/9/08 10:16 PM In reply to: MP3 SIMPLICITY, Cowon, OVERDRIVE etc. by wwwgjsnet

I love my D2. Great battery life. Always resumes from place where stopped and turned off. Will not resume from several locations like ipod but who cares, over 100 books marks possible. Bookmark your spot, go to next book, want to go back, check your bookmark list, tap and you are there.

My husband can hardly change a lightbulb, but I bought him a D2 for his birthday. He doesn't care about bookmarks since he only listens to one book at a time. But he loves his D2 for the resume feature and the battery life. We tried Creative - a horrible experience.

I am starting to try and transfer Audible content to the D2. I am having difficulty getting the books in folder format in the "audible file" but am working on it. Remember, if you get the D2 and download overdrive media then set the D2 to MSC. For Audible set to MTP. (You may have to reverse this setting as I have only started switching back and forth and may be confused.)

You can easily set the unit to "sleep" and it will automatically turn off in 10 min. increments.

I do agree with another forum member that bigger fonts for the middle aged would be nice.

I bought my unit from Amazon and had to get a friend to update the firmware because I couldn't do it. I bought my husband's unit through Cowon and it came with the latest firmware installed.

I also purchased a clear hard plastic case for the unit through iriver which I like. I have dropped the unit several times on a wood floor and so far have had no problems so it seems pretty stable. Get the D2!

Creative Zen NO MORE

by landri - 8/2/08 8:20 AM In reply to: Cowan D2 - very, very happy by tlhughes2

My husband and I have gone through 4 Creative Zen's in the past year and a half. Last night I spent hours trying to find a human to speak with on their web sites - they don't post any phone numbers and trying to contact them via the internet is a joke. We have shared the same problems as many of the postings here - frankly I think these blogs are better than the tech services! BTW - I use an earring to reset the Creative - no more, I'm convinced to try the Cowon D2. thanks everyone - but another piece of technology to learn. Yowzazz!

My experience with Creative Zen and Cowon D2 & iAudio MP3

by M Butterfly - 8/2/08 8:39 AM In reply to: Creative Zen NO MORE by landri

Friend, I had so many issues with the Creative Zen freezing up, stopping, not being able to reboot. I gave it up and did not look back. It was a toy that didn't work. I threw all my energy into Cowon. I have purchased & returned two of them. iAudio and D2. The iAudio had an unreadable and slippery interface. I am an audio book listener and didn't have a use for those super complex sound controls. The D2 was even a greater disappointment since CNET held it up as the best player. There is a fatal flaw in the software that kills the player with the white screen of death. It is a known anomaly by the company but they ingnore mentioning it in their users manual. There was no contact # but others acknowledged that they were selling them with this issue. Korean junk quality control and responsibility. So I rebought my iPod nano which I returned bc of the proprietary issues and have been using that easily with Audible.com books ever since.

Cowon D2

by landri - 8/2/08 9:18 AM In reply to: My experience with Creative Zen and Cowon D2 & iAudio MP3 by M Butterfly

Wow! you just saved me a headache. I went to the Cowon website and got a bit suspiscious when you can't order from them. No retail stores in the area. I was just about to order the Cowon from Amazon when my computer crashed - when I rebooted there was your message. My kids love their Ipods too, despite the proprietary issues - so perhaps I will visit the Apple store. Does the Nano work with NetLibrary? I use that and Audible. Many thanks,
Linda

Samsung YP-T9JABY - multiple bookmarks within a track, variable play speeds, great for running. 'Nuff said.
