I think about it every day. I've been on board since the middle of October, and has been a top priority issue with me since Day 1.
My apologies for those who I haven't been able to help yet. But I'm not giving up.

I just picked up this TV about a week ago from CC in Jersey City. I just wanted to sum up what I've heard so far and if someone can correct me that would be much appreciated.
Seems like this is only happening in the 8 series only. Is this correct? At the amount I paid I really can't work with any hacks or workarounds ..i.e changing the angle, position, putting the receiver on a diff floor, doing the rain dance or anything like that. It should work fairly well right out of box.
I just called Samsung tech (1/4/09 @ 4pm ET) and they told me that the new firmware addresses this. Doesn't seem to be true based on what I've read here unless something changed overnight. Please let me know if anyone else has heard the same thing and if that is a true statement.
What's also interesting is that the 9 series are not ultra slim. Does this design for the 8 series have anything to do with us all experiencing this issue? I would think if it's a good design they all would be going in that direction for furture models. My overall concern is that this is probably something which can't be addressed by firmware and more an overall design flaw and therefore not worth holding on to. Being in tech I can understand the need for updated, but if that doesn't solve it then it'a an unacceptable issue. Also surprised that Samusng hasn't even identified or come forward with what is the actal flaw.
I have to say the picture quality is amazing. Sad to say I'm leaning towards returning it. At the moment backup plans are either 52XBR6 or 750 if this issue or anything greater doesn't manifest itself there.
Thanks for any guidance you all can provide.
Wondering if anyone (particularly Samsung) knows whether the more pricey 950 series takes care of some of these issues. Samsung, has there been explicit testing for this IR interference issue (and shadowing), in the development of the new set? Don't want to invest even more in a Samsung set and have all these same problems.
I had the same apprehension so I ended up getting the Sony XBR6 tonight. Amazon is running a promo right now where you get $300 towards a qualifying blu-ray player. I ended up getting $30 off the TV in accepting the blu-ray player (which ended up being free).
The Sony has better sound out of the box (I don't have a sound system right now). And the bezel is nowhere near as reflective. It also looks less plasticy and modern and more classic. Sure it's more money but with the blu-ray offer it ends up being the same.

Everything I have read, which has been a lot, leads me to believe that this issue is isolated to the 850 series. 650, 750 and 950 appear not to be affected.
It is MY OPINION that this issue is directly related to the 850 slim design. It is also my opinion that the solution will require a hardware change, and won't be solved with a firmware update.
John
I just bought a 650 and it has the same IR interference issue. It only seems to be an issue for the initial few minutes after the Tv is turned on. I wait about 10 or 20 minutes after i turn it on and then the IR signals seem to be sent to my cable box, but very slowly. I talked to a tech guy from logitech and he told me that IR codes may be very similar and this is a issue Samsung should have known months before releasing the TV's.
Apparently they dont do quality control after assembly???? This issue should be fixed though by simply changing the IR codes and doing a remote control call back.
Why Samsung is the only TV company to have this issue is weird!!!
I returned my 46A850 last night at Circuit city, after trying each firmware release, tape over the IR sensor (works with the STB but not the DVD and Amp) and adjusting energy savings/backlight levels etc... I'm sad to see it go and had to resort to my old CRT last night for TV and DLP projector for a movie. After watching a few movies in a dark room on the LCD I think I might prefer the consistent image of a plasma TV.
So are you saying there is no fix for this issue? I am having the same issue where if I turn my Samsung on the direct tv remote is eliminated. After spending 2500 for this new tv, I am finding that I was better off with my 720p Toshiba from 8 years ago.
Samsung after 4 phone calls has basically told me that I have to wait for a technician to be scheduled for 2-3 week from now, and then it would be out of the return period. I guess I will be visiting BestBuy again tomorrow and getting out of this whole ordeal. I will never buy Samsung again. Having an awesome picture is one thing, but having this box eliminate the ability for people to hook equipment to it is rediculous.
In this thread, it's noted several places where there is a fix for this issue. It's a inverter replacement.
I apologize for your frustration, but the fix is available. I announced it on the threads a little over a week ago.
I'll leave that decision to you. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Sometimes a really, really beautiful girl requires a little extra maintenance at first. I had the same problem you had; now it's fixed. And I'm very glad I didn't trade in this extraordinary television, the 850, for, say, a Sony. Sony picture quality is excellent. This Samsung is breathtaking. And if you add a Samsung 2500 or 2050 Blu=Ray player, you won't believe how fantastic even your old, ordinary DVD's can look. By the way, at the store they told me the 2500 has been discontinued, so I got a real bargain on their store demo model.
Hi,

I love my tv.Had it 3 weeks Feb.26.09. Problem with my bell remote for at least 3 min. after tv is turned on. Then it will work fine. Contacted sam. they say to turn off powersave.I will try it, but I shouldn`t have to waste power because of their problem. Might have to return it. Any advice? Thanks
mofwmofw,
Why not call the service center in Canada and see what your options are regarding having the unit fixed?
