Ear Force AK-R8 Cannot Install Drivers (HELP!)

by AidenPryde - 12/28/08 1:54 PM

I recently purchased the Turtle Beach Ear Force AK-R8 and cannot for the life of me get the included driver disc to install.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826502009&Tpk=ear%20force%20AK-R8

I insert the disk, and choose install apps and drivers and when it prompts me I insert the SRM card into a free USB port (I have tried multiple USB ports).

I then have it inserted and press "yes" to continue, but that same window keeps popping up as if I do not have it connected. The green light on the SRM lights up so the SRM is drawing power. I don't know if there is a driver conflict or not, but I even followed a FAQ on Turtle Beach's site which suggested installing the latest RealTek Audio drivers, which I did. And still no luck.

Now the computer recognizes it, as when I go into the device manager it is there as "USB Audio Device." These are my current system specs:

OS: Windows XP Media Edition SP3
MB: ASUS Striker Extreme LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX
RAM: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
HDDs: 2x Western Digital Raptor X WD1500AHFD 150GB 10000 RPM
PROC: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Kentsfield 2.66GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775
SOUNDCARD: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer 7.1 Channels 24-bit

Now I know that Windows will not allow two audio cards to be present at the same time. So the first thing I tried was disabling the Sound Blaster via the device manager, as I can live with having to restart every time I want to switch to speakers.

I would rather not have to remove the Sound Blaster from the case and just be able to switch between the two.

I emailed Turtle Beach about this and they haven't gotten back to me for a week. I have thus far spent 10 hours searching the net for help but have thus far found none.

Has anyone else had this issue or any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. As doing a Newegg RMA and paying the stocking fee is really a pain when there were no disclaimers.

Trying to get help

by AidenPryde - 12/29/08 3:44 PM In reply to: Same problem by JHornsby

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1033518908&posted=1#post1033518908

I started this thread. I haven't had luck with what they've suggested, but maybe you will. There is a link to another thread in there that has you go through a rather complicated extraction process that didn't work for me.

I'm going to have to buy the HPA2 In-Line Amplifier with USB Connection to get it to work, as the headphones themselves are pretty standard and TB sells them in various forms w/ various SRMs.

http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/efhpa2/replacementparts.aspx

Near the bottom.

I'll give TB till Wednesday to respond to my now two emails. If they don't I'll have to buy the In-Line Amplifier and forgo the SRM.

Didn't work.

by JHornsby - 12/29/08 4:45 PM In reply to: Trying to get help by AidenPryde

I have tried everything that they have suggested multiple times and cant get anything to work. I have even reinstalled Windows just in case it was a software conflict and it still doesn't work.

SRM Drivers

by Meely#1 - 12/29/08 3:59 PM In reply to: Ear Force AK-R8 Cannot Install Drivers (HELP!) by AidenPryde

Try downloading and installing the latest drivers from this link:

http://support.turtlebeach.com/site/kb_ftp/533.asp#drivers

Also, try turning off Windows firewall when installing. I think this causes problems on some systems.

Link is Rubbish

by AidenPryde - 12/29/08 5:27 PM In reply to: SRM Drivers by Meely#1

That link is rubbish unfortunately. Why they have to bundle in all these crappy apps with it and not just offer the driver I don't know.

I even redownloaded it. I turned off Windows Firewall and its not an antivirus program running somewhere because I just reformatted and my Symantic Anti Virus sub has expired and I have yet to get a new one (No anti-virus installed).

I'm never buying a Turtle Beach product again.

Not your fault and I know you were trying to help but it is really really frustrating to spend $100 on something that won't even work with no customer support at all.

SRM Problem

by TurtleBeachGuy - 12/29/08 6:16 PM In reply to: Link is Rubbish by AidenPryde

Aiden... I'm from Turtle Beach and I ran across this thread. I'm really sorry you're having this problem and would very much appreciate if you could help us figure out what's causing it.

Please email me at webmaster@turtlebeach.com and I will arrange to have someone from customer support contact you about this. It sounds like an elusive problem that we need to dig into to find the root cause. We can't reproduce this on our test systems which all install fine, so it must be something unique about your system. I'd like to figure out what it is so we can help other customers who might have the same problem.

Hi, I, too, purchased an EarForce AK-R8 that was delivered today. I am having the exact same problem Aiden is having. Would you please have someone from customer support contact me, too? Extremely frustrated at this point.

Just Chill

by JDog2pt0 - 12/30/08 4:57 PM In reply to: Same problem here by sgoodboys

Just chill guys, it seems to be a pretty local problem, a possible bug in the installer, the guys at turtlebeach are hard at work on the problem so just give 'em a little time something about our computers is different than everybody elses. BTW I have found out how to get the add new hardware wizard to pop up, only thing is I was still unable to install off the disk or even install off the download from the website. simply go to C:\WINDOWS\inf OR type "inf" into run under the start menu. Then what you do is go to file "wdma_usb.inf". Open said file, Scroll down to after the first line, an acutall line and it should be something like this

[USBAudio]
Include=ks.inf, wdmaudio.inf
Needs=KS.Registration, WDMAUDIO.Registration
CopyFiles=USBAudio.CopyList
AddReg=USBAudio.AddReg
KnownFiles = USBAudio.KnownFiles

just add something before the "Include" and windows will no longer be able to access its POS generic usb audio driver. ex.

[USBAudio]
NO USE Include=ks.inf, wdmaudio.inf
Needs=KS.Registration, WDMAUDIO.Registration
CopyFiles=USBAudio.CopyList
AddReg=USBAudio.AddReg
KnownFiles = USBAudio.KnownFiles

again, this didn't help me in the slightest but I figured I'd throw it out there anyways. I DO SUGGEST BEFORE YOU START PLAYING WITH THE WINDOWS FILES TO CREATE A RESTORE POINT "Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System restore" select create restore point and name it whatever you want. I'll post updates as I get more emails unless the guy from turtle beach beats me to it. Just hold out guys, I bet in a few days time we'll have our AK-R8's up an running and pwning no0bs out the ass.

They are indeed working on it

by AidenPryde - 12/30/08 6:45 PM In reply to: Ear Force AK-R8 Cannot Install Drivers (HELP!) by AidenPryde

I've been in contact with both their CS department and webmaster and they are working on a fix with the programmers as we speak. I can't post the specifics here as I don't feel it right at this point to give out what might be considered confidential information.

I will ask them if I can post any fixes here so that anyone in the future with the same problem can get it resolved.

Happy to Hear

I am very happy to hear that they are actually working on this. I was worried for a while but as long as they are working on it we should see a fix soon.

SRM Problem

by TurtleBeachGuy - 12/30/08 8:56 PM In reply to: They helped me fix it by AidenPryde

Hi everyone... Turtle Beach here. Apparently a bunch of units were inadvertently shipped with the incorrect VID/PID programmed into the SRM memory, so Windows won't recognize it. We have an easy fix that I can send if you email me at webmaster@turtlebeach.com. I'm arranging to get this posted to our support site, but it won't be until after the New Years holiday. Until then, you can contact me directly and I'll send you the PDF instructions and program to fix the VID/PID.

Thanks for being patient. If you have any questions about the SRM, just email me at the webmaster account and I'll try and help.

AK-R8 Installation problem

by billhmoore - 12/31/08 9:35 AM In reply to: SRM Problem by TurtleBeachGuy

I am having the same problem and called turtle beach cs yesterday and reported the difference in the VID/PID but I have yet to get any reply though the person I spoke with assured me that I would get something before the end of the day.

Since I working in the software industry, I understand their situation but I don't know why they don't provide some minimal information to their customers?

Same driver problem - very frustrating

I'm having the same problem loading the drivers as all of you. Has anyone received a satisfactory fix on this from Turtle Beach Guy?
