Scanner driver problem in vista - can you help?

by ko220 - 12/29/08 12:51 PM

Hi, I just got vista and my Acer 640U scanner driver won't load. I've tried VueScan, which has been recommended over at Microsoft, but when I open it, it says there's no scanner connected. Vista tells me it can't install the driver, that there's not enough room (?!) Anyhow, I know I may have to buy a new scanner, but if anybody has a workaround, I sure would appreciate some help. --Katie

I See No Vista Driver For That Scanner..

There is an XP driver for it at the link below:

http://www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/file/information/1670/

or

http://www.softwaredriverdownload.com/acer_640u_scanner_driver.html

Have you tried it?

Hope this helps.

Thanks, that's the driver I already have that didn't work. Also, I have an old hp697c printer with only a parallel cable, and I'm beginning to think I may have to get a new printer/scanner combo just to be able to deal with the vista thing. Now I just have to decide which printer/scanner.

Recently Had To Do An Extensive Search For A Printer With..

...a parallel port. (We've got a few old dbase programs which require the parallel port to print to Lpt1.) There aren't a lot of new, commercial ones around with such a port.. And if you get a printer/scanner combo, you'll most certainly need to connect it with USB cable.

Hope this helps.

Vista and older scanners

by Joliet Eddie - 1/5/09 7:57 AM In reply to: thanks I already had that one by ko220

I had a similar problem and just went ahead and bought a new scanner.

On the other hand, I have an older HP printer (722C) that is a parallel port printer. Bought a parallel-USB cable and the darn thing has worked just fine in Vista.

Given the prices on these things, though, you probably can get a new USB Vista ready printer/scanner unit for not much more than a new little scanner.

Thanks for all your help

Thanks for all your help and advice. Here's what I ended up doing: I bought a Canon MP240 printer/scanner, which does a great job, is nice and small, and works with Vista. I decided to just take the plunge, and I'm really much happier with it. It was only 64.99 at Best Buy, so all in all, it was a good workaround. I also had a cable from the old scanner which I realized will work with the new printer (since none of them come with cables anymore). I'm keeping my old hp printer & old scanner for use with the old computer, if I ever need it. Thanks again for all your help!! Katie

Vuescan

by tomrlumsden - 2/26/09 4:29 AM In reply to: Scanner driver problem in vista - can you help? by ko220

Vuescan works with all scanners: all you have to do is go into 'Devices' and uninstall your scanner and then reboot and the 'Vuescan' program kicks in and your model will work.
