Just got a laptop and would like to share files with my desktop which is connected to a router via ethernet cable. The laptop connects to the router wirelessly. The router is a microsoft mn-700 and both computers run windows vista. So i went into the network section of control panel and turned on file sharing/media sharing/ etc. on both computers. Then i go to see the other computer (it shows up btw) and then when i try to click on it to see the files it gives the following error:
"MY COMPUTER NAME" is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Logon failure: user account restriction. Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced.
I then checked the windows firewall settings and clicked "exception to file sharing" and still the same error.
Can someone help out? Thanks.
If this is enabled, you will need an identical user account on all machines -same name and password.
how do i make an identical user account on both machines? Do you mean same username on both machines? I currently have both set to "Derek" with no password when i login to windows. Is this what you mean?
Right Click on Network - Properties
Network and Sharing Center will open.
I have my LAN as "Public Network"
Under "Sharing and Security" Network discovery - oN
File sharing - ON
Public Folder Sharing - ON
Printer Sharing - OFF (as I dont want to share printers)
Password Protected Sharing - OFF
Media Sharing - OFF
My Computers are in Same workgroup too.
Then Right Click on the Drive which you want to share.
Select properties, Under security Settings, give Full Control to User "Everyone" And Now you can share the Drive without Access Denied issue !
