CD/DVD drive
by judysims - 12/22/08 11:04 AMI have a Toshiba A135-S4427 with Vista Home premium.
This is my last ditch attempt to find out what the problem is with the CD/DVD/RW
It still recognizes and plays any CD but it suddenly stopped recogizing DVD's.
When I look in windows explorer and click on the D: drive, a window pops up asking me to insert a disk. There's already a disk in it.
I've tried several, all movies, even some I've run before. Nothing.
In the device mgr, its listed as a CD and no mention of DVD.
Please tell me there is some other way than replacing the whole drive. Any help will be appreciated.

by judysims - 12/22/08 11:16 PM In reply to: CD/DVD drive by judysimsNow I'm more puzzled than ever. I happened to leave a DVD in the drive, opened and closed it (which normally starts the WinDVD) and as usual, nothing was happening. I left the laptop on and left the house to run errands.
when I came back, the WinDVD was open and waiting for me to start the movie. Of course, I watched it, just because now I could. 
This makes no sense.

You might want to use an after market software for burn/playback. Usually that type of problem is software related but not always, it could be the drive. The first thing to do would be to try to upgrade the driver, that can be done from device manager.

The first thing support would ask is that you reinstall the drivers.
The second thing they would ask is that you reformat the computer and try with nothing else installed.
You are headed there anyway, so you might as well back up your data and roll up your sleeves and get too it.
This will tell you if you have a defective drive or not.
