Firefox 3.0.5 missing windows

by JJ - 12/18/08 9:12 AM

I have Firefox 3.0.5 running Windows XP Home and it doesn't show all the windows open in the task bar. I did some settings changes in about:config but I don't know what is causing it. My browsers is set up to open in a new window since I hate tabs. Tabs take up real estate. Does anyone know how to correct this issue? Thanks, JJ

Group similar items?

The Taskbar Properties has an option to group similar taskbar icons together. Is that happening with Firefox?

Did you have the same problem before Firefox 3.0.5?

Which about:config settings did you change?

That is not it. My other browsers work fine. What it is, when a new window opens for Firefox it shows in the task bar I only have one Firefox window open. If I minimize the browser window that is showing the other browser window shows up in the task bar showing two grouped together. My other browsers I use always show all the browser windows grouped together, but not Firefox. "Did you have the same problem before Firefox 3.0.5?" I don't know if it is this release or the settings I change trying to speedup Firefox. "Which about:config settings did you change?" I do not recall. I wish I printed the settings so I can change them back. I did change back to default the ones that I believed that I have changed. Is their a way to save all my Firefox bookmarks so I can uninstall and reinstall Firefox without loosing my bookmarks? Thanks, JJ

Saving Bookmarks.

Yes, saving the Bookmarks file is easy.

Just goto Bookmarks > Organise bookmarks, and in the menu options along the top, goto Import and Backup. I would choose "Export HTML", and export the bookmark.html file to a safe location, eg the Desktop as a temporary place. Then when you uninstall/reinstall, you can return to Organise bookmarks and Import that file.

Before you go ahead, have a look at John Wilkinson's "Sticky" post in the forum about uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox. You may find it useful.

But before you do that, :) . Have you tried reversing the option you chose to open new pages in New Windows, and go back to new tabs? I know you prefer new windows, but it may reset something.

And finally, (for now), in about:config, if you use the Filter option at the top of the page window to look for tabs, you may find one of the settings you changed.

Good luck.

I did the save bookmarks and the un-install/re-install route but I have the same problem. It looks like to me that my settings change didn't cause the problem and it must be when I upgraded to Firefox 3.0.5. What do you think?

All I can say is that 3.0.5 seems the same to me.

I wonder if this is a fault you need to report to Mozilla.

But when you uninstalled, did you delete everything, including the Profiles, and then reboot the computer?

I did reboot the computer but I didn't delete the other things. Maybe that is why.

Possibly.

We find that if someone needs to remove Firefox and start again, then they need to remove all traces.
