Upgrade ideas

First- as cheap as memory is-max it out (another gig) then find someone or learn how to clone your hard drive to something like 100 to 250gb, the rest of it- you're glued down until new laptop time. (Maybe a DVD burner but externals are cheap enough now-why bother with having your old one lay around after a swap.)

I have a few upgrades in mind

by DComander1 - 12/14/08 7:35 AM In reply to: Upgrade ideas by tcantrelln

they are mainly a 2.8 Ghz Celeron, 2GB of ram, though those are iffy upgrades, since it will take an expert that knows the chipset and laptop better than me to answer that question, and im planning to get a 160GB hard drive partitioning it in to a 10 GB for Ubuntu, 5GB for the restore partition and the rest for windows. im also trying to find a dvd burner for my laptop, but since its so old, the connector on it is different, so its hard to find a compatible one.

Upgrade RAM & HDD

by austere_sly - 12/14/08 9:23 AM In reply to: I have a few upgrades in mind by DComander1

IMO, you are better off with Pentium M 2.4 Ghz than with Celeron 2.8 Ghz. As someone has suggested add another 1 GB ram, or if possible you can get 2 x 1 GB faster RAM, though don't know how much it shall benefit. Also you may try higher capacity 7200 rpm HDD, before buying check if its compatible, though it should be.

I can't see other other possible useful upgrade you might do with this laptop. Hope this helps.

RE Upgrade Ram and HDD

by DComander1 - 12/14/08 9:42 AM In reply to: Upgrade RAM & HDD by austere_sly

ive used a 2.8 ghz celeron based SFF HP desktop with a ton less memory than this (504mb), and its light years faster than this, just because its a celeron doesn't mean its going to be a PIII in terms of performance, yeah, it doesn't have all that much features per price/performance, but being this is a business laptop, i don't care about the extra features, thats why i have my desktop for, so i have my eyes set on it, and i desperately need to know if my laptop supports it or not, and im planning to up the ram to 2GB and my IDE hard drive to 160GB.

Solid State Hard drive

by DComander1 - 1/14/09 9:42 PM In reply to: RE Upgrade ram and HDD by DComander1

Can my system run one of these? if so, cool, if not, i guess i have to go with conventional hard drives.

Post 8 of 12

You will probably find that (Re-SSD)

by tcantrelln - 1/15/09 4:51 AM In reply to: Solid State Hard drive by DComander1

You can run one, but the cost up front will make you call the paramedic squad. The current size per $ is still way out of line. As I first posit'd, max out the memory that the motherboard will hold, maybe a new-big-very fast conventional laptop hard drive-clean up your OS install-Optimize, etc. Check the drivers for newest and best, then live with it. Or get it into nice shape and sell it and buy new technology, the major companies are really pushing their sales now and you could be the winner. Careful choosing and you could still find XP pro or MCE on one. (I did on a Inspiron 9400-Love it!)

T30 Screen Replacement

by DComander1 - 1/15/09 3:48 PM In reply to: You will probably find that (Re-SSD) by tcantrelln

ok, i accidentally dropped my laptop while trying to plug it in, and now the screens dead, so, how can i replace it, and can i replace it with a A21m screen?

Post 10 of 12

Yes-you can replace it, but

by tcantrelln - 1/15/09 4:24 PM In reply to: T30 Screen Replacement by DComander1

The problem may be with the Inverter board rather than the screen. Or even the graphics system (Onboard Intel-or maybe a Nvidia or ATI), power it up and connect an external monitor to it, hit the fN, plus whatever key to switch to external and see if the Thinkpad graphics still work. The LCD is easier to replace than the Inverter board, prices are close to the same, (Staggering) It must be the correct screen though, and nothing else. Prices I found were between 150 and 225$, If that fixes it-you're out lucky, in my exp- the inverter boards are usually BURIED, and you need to be very adventurous to change one. JFWIW, your decision about upgrading it may have been made for you.

RE: Replacing T30 Screen

i already have the laptop connected to a external monitor, so its the actual LCD Screen that is damaged, and so, ill see about replacing it, and i am an adventurous type, since i now have the correct tools for it.
