Need Help with Hard Drive Clean Up

by marysdolls - 12/5/08 9:41 PM

Hard drive is at capacity! I've deleted old files, old programs, etc. Have run registery cleaner, compressed drive for space and run the disk clean up. I can't run the DeFrag properly because I'm getting a message that I don't have enough memory to do so. After going through all these steps, I still can only get 5.67 GB free. I went into the C://Windows file-folder and there are a lot of TEXT FILES going back to 2005 when I purchased the computer. I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with 71.7GB capacity and 66.0GB is used. A sampling of the text docs are KB953838-IE7.log modified 8/13/2008; KB873333 modified 8/5/2005; WindowsUpdate text document is taking up 1407KB .. ii6 text document is taking up 1866KB .. this is just a small sampling. My question is (finally ;) Can I delete the Text Documents??

Thanks for your help!

Cleaned Out This Yet?

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 12/5/08 9:47 PM In reply to: Need Help with Hard Drive Clean Up by marysdolls

Do a search for *.tmp files.. Delete all files with a .tmp file extension that come up.

Also, navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\Yourusername\Local Settings\Temp folder.. Delete all files inside..

And no, not all .txt files are safe to delete. Most yes (cookies.txt, etc.), but not all.

Hope this helps.

When you ran Disk Cleanup,

by MarkFlax Moderator - 12/6/08 4:06 AM In reply to: Help Cleaning Hard Drive by marysdolls

did you goto the More Options tab?

In there is an option to remove all but the latest Restore Point backup files. Selecting that could recover you a whole bunch of disk space.

These are System Restore backup files, and if your system is set to use System restore, you could have a large amount of backup files that is taking up disk space. If your system is otherwise running smoothly, then you only need the latest backup, and so removing the others should be safe enough.

Does that help?

Hard Drive Clean Up

Yes Mark, I've done that ... I did notice in my Add/Remove programs that I have 4 different Java programs taking up space and am wondering do I need all of these?
J2SE Runtime Env 5.0 update 11 using 120MB
Java 2 Runtime Env, SE using 136MB
Java (TM) 6 update 2 v.1.42._03 using 111MB
Java (TM Runtime Env 6 update 1 using 134MB

No you don't need all those,

by MarkFlax Moderator - 12/6/08 1:13 PM In reply to: Hard Drive Clean Up by marysdolls

but removing the older versions isn't going to create that much more space as they are only a hundred MB or so each. You only need the version 6 Java, although I notice they are down as updates. I would be hesitant removing any in that case unless anyone else here confirms you don't need the others.

Do you have any video or music files on your computer that you can burn to CD or DVD? They, especially video files, are the largest files you can have after the main stream software applications. If you have a large number of photos as well, they could be transferred. Image files are not overly big, but a large number of them could make a difference.

Remember though, if you move any music, video, or photo files to CD/DVD, and delete them off your hard disk, those CD/DVD's cease to be backups because they are the only copies you have.

I am surprised that, after uninstalling all the programs you no longer need, you are still struggling for disk space. A 70 GB drive is not large by today's standards, but it is still plenty big enough for an OS and quite a few necessary programs.

Thanks for your help Mark. I don't have any video or movie files on the drive. I do have my iTunes music and have already backed up those files and have removed most, taking it down to the bare bones using 4.00KB; and have moved all my photos to photobucket and disks. My programs files are using 3603.11MB. I just can't see anything else to remove.

Hard Drive Clean Up

by drbooth - 12/12/08 7:46 PM In reply to: Hard Drive Clean Up by marysdolls

Marysdolls,
There is a program you can search for called JavaRa. It is actually created by the makers of Java runtime and it is designed to remove old versions of Java. You should find it easily by typing
"javara software" in your search bar. It is a small file and usually is compacted into a .zip file. It works very well. There is also a great cleaner package known as "ccleaner" which can be found at filehippo.com
or snapfiles.com. Download this software and run it and I think you will be surprised at the internet garbage it will clean up.
Good luck with your system.

When you ran disk cleanup...

by morninglory - 12/18/08 8:43 AM In reply to: When you ran Disk Cleanup, by MarkFlax Moderator

Hi Mark, just now getting around to reading my newsletter (!). I would like to remove all but the latest restore point but cannot find how to do this. I have created a new system restore point. I don't see where I can delete previous restore points. Please help.

Merry Christmas!

That will be Disk Cleanup

by MarkFlax Moderator - 12/18/08 10:03 AM In reply to: When you ran disk cleanup... by morninglory

Goto Start > All Programs> Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.

A window will open. If you have more than one hard drive you will be asked to select one. Usually the C drive. Then the next window will show "Checking, compress old files", or similar. This may take a few minutes as Disk Cleanup checks the compressed files.

Then the main window opens, and you will see a tab named "More Options". Click that, and you will see an option to delete all but the latest System Restore Point.

I hope that helps.

Mark

I have used this utility before but had forgotten about it. In fact, I looked everywhere for it and couldn't remember where it was located and I use disk cleanup everyday (duh). Anyway, thank you very much.

Thank you, but in reading the info on that program, it's way too technical for me .. Ansi, Unicode, etc., I wouldn't know what to delete or not to delete. Thanks for the info anyway.

Help with Hard Drive CleanUp

by marysdolls - 12/6/08 6:38 PM In reply to: go with unicode by mementh

Well I ran the windirstat program - it's showing that Windows is using 80.4% with 48.5GB and 30,234 files! My program files are only using 7.7% and my documents/settings only 8.8%. Don't know what to do with this.
