My wife needs help picking a new digital camera...
by hmm2005 - 12/1/08 6:56 PMShe would like for it to be able to take very large, high resolution pictures, and have a very brief lag time in between shots. Also, the technical operations of a camera escape both of us, so the camera taking very crisp pictures on its own without our manual assistance is important. I'm not really set on a particular price range at this time.

So you will see difference between top of the line point and shoot camera Canon G10 and EOS Rebel XS. Click on both pictures to zoom in.

BUY A GOOD KODAK OR OTHER POINT AND SHOOT around $99.00. make sure it has lots of features that you can use to learn the stuff you will need to know. for now keep all paper work and box. after you get to know what this camera will do and how to operate it. go look at the nikon D40 camera. Now put the P$S back in the box with all the paper work IT NOW IS A VERY NICE GIFT FOR SOME YOU LOVE

by SerengetiValley - 12/8/08 5:22 AM In reply to: My wife needs help picking a new digital camera... by hmm2005I recently bought a Panasonic Lumix FZ28 as a gift for someone else, but I had the opportunity to use it extensively for a week, and I must say that it is an *excellent* camera. It has an impressive optical zoom range of 18x, good ergonomics, lots of scene modes (which seems to be what you want) and even a fair degree of manual control if you go down that path in the future. Focusing, menu response, settings etc are quick and responsive (for a P&S). It even has a rudimentary 720p movie recording mode.
Its major weakness is the low light capability, but honestly, this extends to all point and shoot cams. None can match a dslr in this arena.
I never thought I'd like a small Point & Shoot camera, since I use a full blown Pentax K20D DSLR system with really good lenses, yet this little panasonic hugely impressed me. The biggest asset of the FZ28 is its excellent Leica lens which gives beautiful colors and sharpness across the zoom range, with minimal distortion. I never had as much fun using any camera (my K20D included) as I did with the Panny 
While it will never replace my K20D for 'serious' hobbyist shooting, I am going to snag one for the holidays as my take-everywhere P&S cam.
Try out the FZ28 once before you make a decision. You won't regret it.

I am very excited to jump into photography, so all of your comments has helped a lot in steering me to the right camera. I am still looking and would appreciate any further suggestions.
