I ,too, like Norton, but can't agree that it is best. I have a question of my own about the Norton Uninstaller. Internet Security 2008 advised me to run the Unstaller to rid my computer of remnants of past Norton installations. When I did, it unstalled ALL exe files so NOTHING would run on my computer, requiring a reinstall of the OS and all programs. As I was unprepared for this event I did not back up quite a bit of stuff and lost it. NOT happy with Norton on this account!
Why did this happen?

Don't forget this is not about a anti virus and which is best. It's about a freezing windows install. But I will say this I had a Toshiba laptop that had the same problem. I also had McAfee installed on it. With that laptop I narrowed the problem down to the over heating problem. But like more and more people are having a problem with McAfee. It seemed a trend of freezing pc's emerge with McAfee. Personally I have never seen McAfee finish a scan. I would say to test the system uninstall McAfee and see if the problem still occurs.
The point is, a common troubleshooting steps is to always remove whatever Internet security software that you are currently running. It does not matter which brand you have, you can have problems with any one of them. It is probably a good idea to uninstall and reinstall your security software every once and awhile anyway.
is junk besides the fact that upon trying to renew subscription via phone, they banged my bank card triple and it took 3 weeks to get the scum to repay ,so's tryin to make up for tryin to scam me they send out free disk and upon install/uninstall proceedure I had a similar experience as one of the other posters, ended up having to do complete reinstall of OS and all the norton tech folks could do was say they were sorry got that junk off of all my systems and will never use it again it's junk

WHY?
It uninstalled my exe files also.
Don't forget that there is also a STARTUP folder under START | PROGRAMS.
Check if laptop manufacturer has online testing for hardware. I have a Compaq laptop and can test all the hardware components online.
1.Update Windows.
2.Update your drivers.
3.Update your programs.
Note if freezing when using specific programs or not.
Download HDTune for free, test your hard drive.
Download Memtest test your ram.
Try an online test of your software and hardware, at www.pcpitstop.com it's free. It will give you a complete report of hardware, software etc.
Find a tool that will monitor hardware temps, such as cpu or video if either is overheating, that is your problem.
Reference "My Computer freezes and runs slow", I went to "Event Viewer" and clicked on "System". I have a lot of "Error" and "Warnings" with a number such as 1706 and other numbers. I ran a Regustry and Disc Cleaner but they are still there. Can I delete them without causing problems to the computer?

In the last 2weeks the problem started, then it becomes win32 svchost problem.
solution: if freeze,
1st step: Remove from network the computer and @ comand
2nd step: prompt type "cmd" and press enter, then type "netsh" enter, "Winsock" enter, then type "reset" this will clear all the communication ports. You restart the computer.
3rd step: Connect to network and patch everything windows including XP-SP3. Remove computer from network and restart.
4th step: start computer without network, do Scandisk/Fix of C, clear Java caches and reduce from 1000 to just 50 clear caches on IE and control your antivirus.
Hello,
I am having a similar problem in that mine is locked as it acts if it is thinking thus freezing the mouse. Ctrl, Alt, Delete does nothing abut it will turn off manually. Then when I turn it back on it goes through the reboot process but again acts like it is thinking, screen saver is up with icons showing on the desktop but again the mouse if frozen with the 3 finger salute not working as well. Can't navigate the programs or start menu to do anything as the mouste is frozen. Tried to connect USB mouse but it does not recognize it or anything. I have not used it in a few months as this was going on and forgot about this mess I am having. But before it got in this state I was using an external mouse in the USB port but then it got acting up not working right, then not at all but the touch pad ,mouse still worked. Now I cannot get it booted up since it freezes and could I get some help with this or just junk it and get another? THANKS for any support I could get with this as it was a very nice laptop.

Hi Lee,
I had this problem if it is a problem when ever Mcafee gets and update and then "Scan the computer" after the new Dat/updates are installing. I think it may be part of Mcafee to get full control over the CPU to update the installation. But usually after the update is installed I get control back with out having to reboot or shout the computer down to get control back.
The updates take several minutes to install making the computer very slow to re pond, so when a new updates comes in Ive lean to shout down all other application and let Mcafee take over I usually get an Arrow moving in a circular motion down on the Task bar when a new update is downloading. The system freezes or becomes slow when it is scanning and updating Mcafee.
To be shore you don't have a problem with your Mcafee installation why not run the"Mcafee Virtual Tech" and let Mcafee look and your McAfee's installation and see if there is a problem with it. If the is it will try to correct it or offer some sort of fix.
I running an old machine Perm II class so this take several minutes for the updates to install.
Hope this Helps

Here's an old school suggestion, and it just might work.
1. Clean out your windows "temp folder".
2. Clean out any temp folders located in your windows profile
3. Remove all "Temporary Internet files"
4. Remove all cookies
5. Degrag your computer
6. Run "Scan Disk"
7. Try letting windows manager your memory.
