Look at other discussions on this.

You left out some key information as well as what your research at dell.com turned up. You would tell if the drive is SATA or PATA and tell what OS CD you have to work with.

So is it SATA or PATA?

As to the OS in use, I didn't ask that. I asked what version of the OS was on the CD. This matters if we are to go over 127GB.

I find stuff on dell.com but won't look until the basics are out of the way.

Yup.

The issued XP CD must be XP SP1 or later for you to install to larger than 127GB drives proper. There is some other way with old "XP" but for most they end up at repair counters if they have "XP" which is why I now insist on checking that CD.

It is XP SP2

But I am not sure if my system would support more than 120GB or even 120GB. Thats what i want to be sure of

A rule that is working for me.

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 12/6/08 10:32 AM In reply to: It is XP SP2 by vineet.garg

1. If XP (no SP) then less than 127GB.
2. If SATA, no limit save item 1.

Some seek assurance that this will work with that. As with all computers there is no 100% assurance. Dell, others may issue a BIOS that is limited, where the prior was not. You'll never know till you try with your machine.

Good luck. At least you have the right CD to start with.

Dependencies

by vineet.garg - 12/6/08 10:46 AM In reply to: A rule that is working for me. by R. Proffitt Moderator

So you mean it depends upon OS and BIOS only (with PATA only). e.g. if I have XP SP2 or SP3 and interface is PATA then it will depend upon my BIOS only??? or are there other factors too?

Post 11 of 13

The factors are very small.

BIOS, interface, version of the (base) OS.

More at http://www.48bitlba.com

If your BIOS is from 2007 or later I'd get the drive. You have the right OS.

One more question: Any idea how to check BIOS system to see the max capacity it supports?
