Is Norton 2009 really lighter on your system?

by Jman787 - 12/2/08 4:33 PM

I know that previous versions of Norton was very taxing on the system, is 2009 really different and worth a try?

Thanks

Jman..

Scattered within the 6 page thread directly below, should give you some of the answers you're looking for.

"Norton 2009"
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21078454-Norton-2009-Product-Line-Now-On-Sale

And more:

"Norton 2009 Seems to be showing promise"

I generally like to go the software's forum, to see if user's are reporting an inordinate amount of problems and complaints:

Hope this helps..

NIS 2009

by michhala - 12/4/08 4:19 PM In reply to: Re: Is Norton 2009 really lighter on your system? by Carol~ Moderator

A week after its release, a friend needed help installing NIS 2009 and required assistance from a Symantec tech who installed it remotely. He has IE7 and XP SP3. There were problems involved and he was told that SpyWare Blaster, Spybot S&D, and Adware had to be removed and were not necessary because the Norton AV was protection enough from malware....it would make me uncomfortable to depend only on Norton as I use all three of the aforementioned programs.

Having said that, after reading the DSLreport reviews provided by Carol, I might upgrade my NIS 2008 to 2009 when my defs subscriptions expires in 30 days.

Not for me!____

I will never, ever, run another Symantec product on my computer, after all the problems I had keeping it running after my Internet Security just "decided" to spontaneously cancel my subscription several times in the course of one year.

I had to uninstall and reinstall the program several times, which included having to edit the registry.

The only thing good I can say about Symantec is that they taught me how to use RegEdit fearlessly.

ive been using it for a couple of months now. the virus definitions download and install faster, the program uses less memory, and loads faster at system boot. Norton is great for a firewall and virus protection, but i would use some freeware software for spyware cleaning.

Questions for sonymaster101

by michhala - 12/6/08 1:26 AM In reply to: yes by sonymaster101

I am thinking of upgrading from NIS 2008 to 2009 in a month and have questions. What version of Windows and browser are you using? To quote a Norton tech, AdAware, Spybot, and SpyBlaster conflict with 2009 -- what software are you using for spyware?

I am cautious because NIS 2008 had serious problems with SP3 which were rectified after two series of patches.

My thanks.

Norton Internet Security 2009 and AdAware

by blusmk - 12/6/08 12:04 PM In reply to: Questions for sonymaster101 by michhala

I have Norton Internet Security 2009 and AdAware 2008 installed on three XP computers ( a Pentium III and 2 Pentium 4's and haven't seen any problems. The new NIS 2009 is much better than previous versions and my computers are more responsive now. As for AdAware 2008, it seems every new version has gotten slower and slower. I used to run it everyday, but now maybe once a week because it takes well over an hour to do a Full Scan and close to an hour for the "Smart Scan".

The only Norton products I've had trouble with are Norton SystemWorks 2006 and Up and Norton 360 Version 1.0. Norton 360 Version 2.0 may be better now, but after what I went through with that program, I'm not about to take a chance.

Norton SystemWorks started storing a tremendous amount of JUNK files in the "Nprotect Folder" that Windows could not remove. I had to use a program called "Unlocker 1.8.7"(FREE on Download.com) to remove them. One computer had about 33 GB of files (35,000+ files) like that. The OS and all my programs only used 28 GB of space.

Hope this helps'

blusmk -- Yes, it does help

by michhala - 12/7/08 1:11 AM In reply to: Norton Internet Security 2009 and AdAware by blusmk

Although I am happy with NIS 2008, it does slow things up a bit before and after a download. For that reason and to better manage working on the computer, I have NIS configured for popup alerts when downloads are available and download at my convenience. So....2009 using less resources and being more responsive is a good thing methinks.

I have AdAware SE Personal free and never upgraded to the 2008 version. I do a quick manual download from their website and the full scan is quite fast.

Other than NIS, I have always stayed away from the Norton suites because they had reputations for being troublesome.

Are you using SP3 or IE 7 on any of your three computers?

My Norton subscription expires in 32 days and rather than renewing , it seems wiser to upgrade to 2009 which has a reputation of being an improvement over 2008 and will come with a free one-year subscription. Only one thing will hold me back......my neurotic reluctance to install new software on my computer :)

I appreciate your help......thank you so much....

Norton 2009

by maurice--2008 - 12/13/08 12:27 AM In reply to: Questions for sonymaster101 by michhala

Norton certainly runs faster than previous versions. I have used it since September & it works flawlessly on my PC with:
Malwarebytes Anti Malware (paid for version 1.31)
Ad - Adware 2008 Professional with Adwatch permanently on.
Norton Anti Bot
Overkill I know but I have never had any type of problem.

Good news, Maurice

I think I will take the leap and upgrade my NIS 2008 to 2009. I would say you were cautiously sensible and not in "overkill".

I dumped Norton

by Manfred Schwermann - 12/6/08 8:25 AM In reply to: Is Norton 2009 really lighter on your system? by Jman787

A previous version of Norton slowed an older machine to the point it took a full 10 min to get running. My new machine came with the free version of AVG, and I soon upgraded to their whole suite of protection. It is great! Fast, and they upload new virus protection each day.

Ditching

Get rid of Norton. To bad at detection. The best is Kaspersky!!!!!!!!!! http://www.kaspersky.com

My experience has been a good one....

For 9 years (knocking on wood as I speak so as not to tempt the fates), I have had very good luck with NAV and NIS. Although few and far between, Norton blocked those viruses that tried to enter the system, some of which were serious trouble.

Comodo Internet Security, Comodo BOClean 4.27 and two that had conflicted was Ad-Aware 2008 with Spybot S&D but no problems now since I'm using SpyBot S&D version 1.61.38 Beta. 3 are for spyware & Comodo Internet Security 3.5.36968.437 is always updating and informs me that there are updates for the Firewall. ALL are free.
