I have a Gateway, 2.2GHz GT4010 with Microsoft XP Version 3 and Internet Explorer 7. I have Spyware Doctor, Malwarebytes, CCleaner and Privacy Guardian. I also had Deluxe Shield running.....I have since removed the program.........maybe having that along with Spy Doctor was overkill...
I just now followed all the steps you listed about how to remove unwanted "things" from your computer which you posted a few years ago......you suggested using "search" to find .tmp files. I found a bunch of files.........DF7390.tmp, DF332D.tmp. wrl7215, and om21tmp, MAR16 tmp, etc. etc. a total of 77 files. Can I really delete all of these files? I have alredy gotten burned as you will see below and now am a little gun-shy.
I did have I-Oribit version 2 and then upgraded to Version 3. This is where I ran into problems.....it suggested I update my NVIDIA drivers which I did and boy did things go wrong. I had to call Gateway and pay for the assistance to get me out of the mess I created. Anway, the agent told me not to run a registry cleaner because he said they can foul up things. I had been running a cleaner from PC Tools. From everything I have read on the forums, I thought you were supposed to run a registry cleaner, now I am all confused and don't know if I should or not. Was thinking of downloading the free AVG program and remove Privacy Guardian ........however that could be overkill also.
I personally think I-Orbit Version 3 is more for folks who are more computer wise than me. I only use my computer for searches, e-mail, simple games like Mahjong, Bejeweled (I am not a "gamer")
Can you please advise if I should run a registry cleaner and also about the items I think might be overkill. Anyone else please feel free to share your experiences about using Registry Cleaners and I-Orbit V 3.

Yes, as long as you have all programs closed, you can safely delete all files that have a .tmp file extension. They are temporary in nature only.
In my opinion, especially for those that are unfamiliar with which registry entries are safe to remove and which ones aren't, DON'T use a registry cleaner. Unfortunately, because they automatically remove lots of entries, it's tough to know which ones are OK to remove and which ones aren't.. Generally, I remove registry entries manually, one by one, when necessary.. Yes, I use registry cleaners occasionally but I don't recommend them for those who are uninitiated.
Next, as to all the computer optimization tools such a s Iobit, I just don't use them.. Just my opinion, but once again, I don't like the tools that do everything automatically. A program which recommends downloading and installing updated drivers when things are running just fine is something I don't like. If it ain't broke.... Something goes a little wrong with a tool like that and your computer has issues.. Windows already has a defrag program that will serve it's purpose when used occasionally. The same with Chkdsk. You can also fix other problems as they come up but in my opinion, those tools do very little to actually optimize performance.
