Jasper Xbox 360 question. Can you tell?

by berbar - 12/1/08 7:26 PM

Hi, does anybody know if the Xbox 360 carrying the new Jasper motherboard is already in the market? If so, how can you tell them apart from the Falcon ones? Can you tell them apart from the sealed box?

Thanks.

From what I understand

From what I understand, these systems are still very hard to come by, and probably will be until at least after the holidays. But check www.xbox-scene.com regularly, and if someone figures out a reliable method of figuring out how to determine a Jasper system from Falcon, it'll likely be posted there.

Also, from what I've seen, the new Jasper systems don't have the 65nm GPU like they were supposed to, or at least not all of them do.

And if you're worried about the RRoD problem, that should be mostly taken care of by the second revision of the Falcon motherboard that halves the number of RAM chips in favor of just using higher capacity ones to still come out to the same 512MB all other revisions have.

If you can wait until Feb or March to buy a system, then you can probably be pretty certain almost any system you pick up off a store shelf will be a Jasper. If you don't want to wait that long, there's really nothing wrong with the Falcons. Most of the noise comes from the DVD drive, and even that's not quite as bad with the newer BenQ drives. Though I can't quite claim to know what other drives sound like.

What about the GPU?

Thank you Jimmy. Is my understanding that the Jasper also has a new 65nm GPU, was that an improvement over the Falcon or does it already have it?

It's supposed to

It's supposed to, but some of the early Jasper models people have managed to get their hands on don't necessarily have the new 65nm GPU. But that really only means Microsoft can cut down on the amount of active cooling needed and include a smaller (capacity) power supply.

The thing that seems to have been causing the RRoD problem is heat buildup. In particular, too many components were apparently located directly under or around the CPU and GPU which overloaded the capacity of the supplied cooling. While this sort of thing should never have happened in the first place, and some credible rumors place the blame on Microsoft trying to cut corners to be the first out of the gate in the next-gen war, there were also some soldering issues with some models from the sound of it, Microsoft has been moving things around in an effort to eliminate the problem. The second gen Falcon systems should be pretty safe. Most of the stuff that was located under the GPU has been moved elsewhere. The Jasper models might be even less prone to problems, but you have to remember this is Microsoft we're talking about here. They have problems enough with just software, why should their forays into the land of hardware be any different? Some of the last 360s to roll off the assembly line will likely RRoD for some unlucky people, and they won't be able to get replacements as easily.

Thank you

I've waited for about 3 years, I think I can wait two or three more months to get the Xbox.

Thanks for all the advice.
