I will be honest. HP printers and great, HP Desktops are great, HP cameras? dunno, HP Plasma and LCD TV's? dunno.. But HP Laptops? I must reiterate that I find they are just not worth the price. Like someone said earlier, my "ugly" IBM Thinkpad will outperform all of the HP laptops that I've helped sell and now try to help fix.
Agreed on the IBM laptops. Those things are SOLID! I used to work for them and they gave me one to use for work at home. You could do pretty much anything to them and they performed well.
Lenovo makes them now so I'm not sure about the quality. But I'd definitely buy an IBM laptop over an HP.
made Lenova (ASUS).

Wikipedia: original design manufacturer
An original design manufacturer (ODM) is a company which manufactures a product which ultimately will be branded by another firm for sale. Such companies allow the brand firm to produce (either as a supplement or solely) without having to engage in the organization or running of a factory. ODMs have grown in size in recent years and many are now sufficient in size to handle production for multiple clients, often providing a large portion of overall production. A primary attribute of this business model is that the ODM owns and/or designs in-house the products that are branded by the buying firm. This is in contrast to a contract manufacturer (CM).
This model is especially used in international trade, where a local ODM is used to produce goods for a foreign company which sees some advantage in the transaction, such as low labor inputs, transport links or proximity to markets. This is also used where local ownership laws possibly prohibit direct ownership of assets by foreigners, allowing a local firm to produce for a brand company for either the domestic market or export.
This type of business is part of "outsourcing". An example is Compal Electronics, which makes notebook computers and monitors, and operates as a mass producer for numerous brand companies, assisted by low labor costs, low-cost transport, and the near commodity nature of the physical inputs (in Compal's case, computer components).
The market research firm iSuppli issued a report in 2006 which demonstrated that 82.6% of PC notebooks are made in Taiwan by Taiwanese original equipment manufacturer (OEMs) and ODMs.
Well i did find out Asus doesn't make the Thinkpad it's either Compal or Quanta but they are still ODM's.

Nice post. Seems we need to skip any maker that goes all ODM and won't stock spares.
...as when IBM owned the brand. Now Lenovo owns it, but practically nothing else has changed.
All the engineers and designers who worked at IBM...work for Lenovo.
Have questions about Thinkpads or Lenovo, go to the source:

The guys who design, build and support the products will answer your questions.
What I run into are the no-names with no spares.

I set this site up to stay in touch with other HP customers who've had the same problems... and how to get solutions for them.
It also has the latest updates any class action lawsuits coming up.
I just started the site so there isn't too much there but it's slowly growing.
I bought this hp dv9008nr for 899.00 after a short period it fails to even notice my wireless and wireless assistant software. I have tried everything from reseting bios updating bios and all the drivers associated with it and nothing. The screen has also cracked on the outer casing as most everyone else whom bought this model. Is there any way to get it to work again? I have used the restore discs to return to factory settings and that just does not fix it either. Is there a site to find out what Linux will work for my laptop?

This is a response to my post regarding HP and their support.
I went to the Hp site and connected to the live support chat and they offered to repair my whole pc free of charge. They replaced the whole mother board, screen and hinges. Now it works great. They had my pc back to me super fast, I was amazed.
hp laptops do not suck (don't dis hp) without proving your statement properly. I love hp b/c of the price vs speed ratio (fits my budget perfectly)
A bad experience on one computer does not mean that the rest are like that I'm on my third hp computer and will probably get a 4th hp in 2010
the zt3000 is old technology (i remember back when pentium 3 mobile cpu laptops cost $2500) now they are dirt cheap ~$400
plus hp does have a gfx driver update out- version 7.86.3
and hp laptops are still faster in overall performance when compared to dells with equivalent specs
take the compaq v2000z laptop (ati radeon express 200m) it can play call of duty with excellent frame rates
bf2142, the system is taxed a lil more- cpu & gpu running at full speed, but game play is quite smooth and responsive ~40 fps.
idk where you're coming from but hp + amd + ati are an amazing 3d performance combo
good luck on a better hp purchase (how much did you pay?)
the dv5z laptop is a great computer btw.
THEY SHOULD OF REFUNDED MONEY------------THEY CLAIM 2 BE CUSTOMER SERVICE EXCELLENCE #1
