I resent my favorite Mystery Meat being tarnished and associated with the scurge of unsolicited and or unwanted email.I recommend a name change for those evil missives.Lets call them "fish sticks " or perhaps beef jerkies? lol

I like my unsolicited email with eggs. I also like fish sticks and beef jerky. Lets call them "chopped liver" or maybe "pickled pigs brains" lol

Spam

by gothceltgirl - 11/30/08 7:22 PM In reply to: I resent by Fish

LOL! Sadly I never go to try the ubiquitous spam before becoming a vegetarian. I am so glad however that there are folders especially for this useless thing we call "spam" e-mail.

spam

The poll doesn't have the right answers.

"spam" (lower case "s") is unsolicited commercial email. An email from someone you know asking to help them move might be unwanted and unsolicited but it's not spam.

"Spam" (upper case "S") is a Hormel spiced ham and pork shoulder product that can be quite tasty fried with eggs or baked with a brown sugar and orange juice glaze.

Definition and common usage are different

by john3347 - 10/4/08 7:18 AM In reply to: What does the word "spam" mean to you? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I define Spam as mail that is sent to a large number of recipients to either defraud them or to sell them something (usually a worthless item). I often use the term to also include any email that comes from an unknown sender that is not specifically and legitimately intended for me personally.

What does the word "spam" mean to you?

by shifra10 - 10/4/08 10:20 AM In reply to: What does the word "spam" mean to you? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Spam was given as a supplement to basic rations in England during WW11. Food was rationed in general, but the Ministry of Food desired to give extra rations to physical workers in agriculture and armaments factories. Spam may have been supplied the Americans, and like all rations, found its way to the general public. It was a processed mixture of unidentified meat and unidentified filling, packed in tins from which it came out as a slab. It could be fried, baked or mixed with other foods. I suspect that the connection to the term used on the internet is the unidentified and unidentifiable element.

Spam

by JeffDeWitt - 10/4/08 2:47 PM In reply to: What does the word "spam" mean to you? by shifra10

Spam is now and has always been (even during WWII) pork shoulder and ham with some spices and some potato starch as a binder.

While spam (being unsolicited commerical email) does ultimatly trace its name to the canned pork and ham product it really gets its name from a Monty Python skit.
