Trouble applying themes in vista.

by askj113 - 11/26/08 12:19 AM

Okay. I installed vista glazz, patched the files needed, downloaded some sweet deviantart themes, unzipped them to the themes folder, and tried to apply them. They don't show up in the themes dialogue through the control panel, when I just click on the file through explorer it says .theme is an incorrect file extension. Likewise when I go through browse in the theme window in the control panel. When I just try to apply the .msstyles it opens up the old style control panel window but it shows just windows basic on a black background and I have to reset to aero. I followed this guide to doing all this (http://lifehacker.com/5056544/how-to-use-custom-windows-visual-styles)
Additionally I just tried luna element which even has an installer. When I go into the theme window now it shows luna in the drop down list but it still says incorrect file format when I try to apply it. This is on a vista home premium laptop that has a tendency to be screwed up. Is this a problem with the patching job or something?

I used Vista Glazz, which is one of the best known and most popular patching programs. So I doubt if it was that. also I used the new version that works with sp1, so its not that

And sp1 is installed, and it is the 32 bit version of vista. I used the new version

I've encountered issues with Vista Glazz and SP1...

Vista Glazz is one of the applications I mention in the forum sticky, but unfortunately it seems a bit sporadic in successfully patching the system files on a Vista SP1 system, at least in my experience. What I usually do:

1.) Use System File Checker to undo the changes and repair all other system files as needed.
2.) Reboot.
3.) Run Vista Glazz again, using both patching options.
4.) Reboot.
5.) Place the msstyles file, along with the other needed theme files, in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes
5.) Double-click the msstyle file.
6.) When the Theme window appears with the (incorrect) preview, click OK.

In most cases it will then work correctly, but if you're placed into Windows Classic mode you'll need to refer to this article on the issue.
