I am also having a problem with the Magic Focus on my Hitachi. We only purchased it Sept. 2003. I noticed the other day that one side (left) was all blurry and when I put the menu up I can see the words only on one side were blurry and the screen looked warped. reading all of your inquiries, I didnt see anyone say anything about only one side being out of focus or a warped screen. It was like my TV had a stroke and it affected the left side only. We had a repair man out and he was determined it was just the chips, he replaced the chips and realized it wasnt the problem. So he did something else but was vague on what he found. Hmmmmm. My husband noticed he was fooling around with the Manual Focus. So later that night when I had got home, I checked the TV myself and still noticed the warped screen. I called the repair man, unfortunately he will be on vacation for a week and wont be able to come back out til he returns. He didnt say much when I told him about the warped screen and why he didnt notice it was still having a problem. I told him from the beginning it was warped and blurry. So do these repair men (Hitachi) really know what they are doing?????? I also said to my husband maybe it was still out of focus, so we did our Magic Focus on Auto and it screwed up again. We were able to Manual focus it and got it back in focus, but realized we can't use our Auto Focus anymore (or until we figure out what is goin on) 'cause it scews up and makes it blurry. Anyways, if anyone else has a simliar problem, please let me know. Also, I am wondering if I will need a whole new Convergence kit. I was told they go for like $500-$600, plus labor of around $250-$300 to install.
the green on our tv appears to project a rounded image and we can't get to the manual on the set up on the magic focus. any suggestions?
I think that what he means when he says:
"pressing the service mode button on the main board"
is this
open it up and find the main electronics board then expect to find a svc mode button (hopefully labeled ;~)
I don't have a svc manual either but will try this to get to manual convergence and then look for manual
There is a knows product defect with the light engine component for certain rear projection LCD TV's made by Hitachi.
From other forums, those who have encountered this have been able to contact Hitachi directly and receive a replacement light engine, even if your Hitachi TV is past it's manufacturer or retailer warranty; however, per these other forum messages they have not been covering the installation cost.
We wrote about this situation which happened to us with our Hitachi rear projection 50 inch TV that was / is 3 years old. If you want to see pictures of our TV before we had the light engine replaced (yes, free of cost) you can see it here on this article we wrote on our home blog:

Dan
I was able to access the manual mode by pressing the magic focus button on the front panel a couple of times. Not sure how many but, was able to get to the 2nd line up and manual converge the lines. Mine is an older 60 inch rear projection. Have to reset the convergence on occassion but, better than spending several hundred.
Hope this helps.
Hi we just replaced both convergence chips and I was going throught the manual MF when the red curved and went all over the place while I was trying to get it back the tv started clicking and immediately turned off... ANY Ideas?? Or where I need to look for them... THANKS
I have the same problem with my 51s700
