Try Reseating the Memory Cards

by mbixby - 11/22/08 8:58 AM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have a Dell Inspriron 8200 and used to have the same problem with random freezing - especially after travelling with the notebook to a different climate. To resolve the problem I opened the memory access door on the bottom of the computer and reseated the memory chips. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE DELL WEB SITE TO MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS SAFELY, ESPECIALLY IN DRY CLIMATES PRONE TO STATIC DISCHARGES.

I was having to do this almost every time I travelled. A couple of years ago I upgraded to larger capacity memory chips and since installing those I haven't had any freezes, even after travelling.

Same problem

by Gladiator13 - 11/22/08 9:26 AM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have the exact same problem with my desktop and I have a lot more space on the HD and more ram; so far my laptop hasn't had the problem though.

WP SP3 Desktop w/2 gigs Ram, 250 gig harddrive, AVG virus,

by Rick1217 - 11/22/08 10:45 AM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I downloaded the upgrades from MS Thursday (all except the Betas). I run virus and adware twice daily. Since then during email at least for now, the screen will go blue and the computer will either restart or like just now, turned off completely.
Everything says no problem yet obviously there is.
Now who is the wizard that can give me a happy Thanksgiving knowing that my Christmas shopping is done.

Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this

by nobbie1_au - 11/22/08 10:56 AM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi,

After reading yr post may i suguest a couple of things u may want to look at

1. have u installed internet Explorer 8 BETA i was running this software and suffered the same problems u are talking about, i would be using my laptop and bang it would freeze and hang there until i shut it down and rebooted. if you have in stalled it UN-install through windows control panel add removed programs and re-install IE 7

2. look for a known restore point when yr laptop function correctly and restore it to that time whenit was working fine. click start accessories tools restore, when did this start to happen, did you install recent windows updates to yr laptop, as i have found that after certain updates it can cause driver conflicts as windows sometime wrong identifies programs and attempts to update it causing *********** in yr system which in turn can cause system freezes.

well these are wat i have found to cause my toshiba sattlelite p100 to freeze so i hope this can help u to repair yr problem

agree with previous comments: Blame it on Explorer Beta 8

by kristin bennett - 1/31/09 5:48 PM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this by nobbie1_au

I installed INTERNET EXPLORER 8 (BETA) and my DELL Dimension 9100 with 4BG RAM etc started freezing all the time. After talking to some techies at my college, I uninstalled beta 8 and reinstalled Explorer 7 and the freezing stopped!!!
What did I learn? if you are asked to update to EXPLORER 8(Beta) or any other beta edition of software say NO!!!!

Did you check for spyware?

by Darrelray777 - 11/22/08 11:01 AM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

If you havent checked for spyware/malware, I highly adivise using Malwarebyte's anti malware first. Its free here on download.com. Then download spybot (also free) and scan. My dads computer was locking up, I installed said programs, and it found 44 infections. After having removing them we ran chkdisk and its been fine ever since.

my pc has a tendency of freezing

by royhla - 11/22/08 11:03 AM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have a question: Why does my laptop suddenly stop? I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 running vista with 2GB ram memory and 80GB hard disc and 40 percent free space. Without notice, while running programs or simply surfing the Internet, it sometimes just stops, it doesn't turn off, it just freezes and becomes motionless, and there is no way I can do any thing until I manually turn it off. I have uniblue, trend micro, windows washer virus scan installed and PC Tools, and they both tell me the computer is free of viruses. What can I do? Is my hard drive too small? Should I buy an external hard drive? What could it be? Please help me with down to earth English. Thank you in advance!

Del laptop Freezing

by antonyz - 11/22/08 12:59 PM In reply to: my pc has a tendency of freezing by royhla

I have a Latitude C610 and has the same intermitent problem. It also freezes during post/start. I swaped video cards, memory, processor, mice without result. The next step is to try changing the motherboard and screen. One thing that I noticed is that the hinges are a bit loose.

XP freezing

by ramjet3 - 11/22/08 12:15 PM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

It seems to me that there could be any number of answers without any further information. However, if Jose A. knows when it began locking up he could go into Control Panel and pull up Add and Remove Programs and click the box to show all updates. Check to see what was added just prior to the time it began locking. Try uninstalling the program/programs. This has worked for me in the past.

Freezes

by deags1 - 11/22/08 1:05 PM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Could be a memory problem, download a free memory test file so you can create a boot disk to check memory.
Could also be a overheating problem with the processor, the heatsink might not be refitted to the processor.

XP Freezing up on laptop

by tomjones1 - 11/22/08 1:07 PM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have a similar configuration except I have the DUO and 2 gig ram (533). My experience is that the Explorer Browser is usually to blame. You could try running Firefox (newest Windows version) but you must leave the add-on's off on one of them.

Xp Freeze?

by Alchemist1000 - 11/22/08 1:32 PM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

XP is freezing? One possible answer could be that it is overheating. Take the back off of your laptop and vacuum it out on the inside. Put it back together aqnd get yourself a laptop cooler. A really good one is by Belkin. Use it. If it still freezes, maybe it's bad memory in a certain location. Try a new memory chip. If all else fails, get it to a repair shop or put in all new parts by yourself, if you know how. Last possible solution - buy a new laptop, lol. Good luck.
