viewing Windows video on OS X

by chesshaus - 11/14/08 1:11 PM

I recently purchased a MAC PowerBook G4. Previously, I was using an HP laptop. My problem is that, more often than not, I am unable to open an E-mail attachment sent to me. I get a message that "The Movie could not be opened. This file is not a movie file."

I suspect that the attachment is something that requires a Windows Media viewer. Where do I download the software so that I may open these attachment? I have looked, and have not bee successful in locating the software that I know will do what I want.

See if VLC PLAYER handles that.

But given how long the G4 has been out of production, can I ask why you picked this one?

PowerBook G4

Did some reading about Macs, talked to a few people, and ended up purchasing this on E-bay.. It has a 15" screen and is a superDrive. So far, I'm quite happy with it. Have read since that the PowerbookG4 is one of the best that Apple has produced.

Those attachments

Try downloading a piece of software called Flip4Mac.

It adds the necessary codecs to QuickTime to enable you to view .wmv files, normally only playable with Windows Media Player (no longer produced for the Mac) just by double clicking on it.
You want the FREE version which is provided by Microsoft, not written by them, just provided, from
Here

VLC, as Bob recommended, is also a good app which usually opens all the stuff that others cannot.

If, in the future, you find that there are attachments that you cannot open, just post here and there will be plenty of suggestions on how to open them.

I like the PB G4 too, I have one and it is doing very nicely thank you.

VLC Player

VLC Player will work fine with your G4 PowerBook, I use it on 2 that are sitting next to me. Download the latest version from VersionTracker.com

Flip4Mac will work too, but not with as many videos/video formats/codecs.

Thank you! (really)

I wasn't sure on the G4. I knew it was fine on G5, now if I hear from the G3 owners the picture would be complete.

Thanks for filling in the gaps in my mind.

VLC (http://videolan.org) or MPlayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu) will play most formats.

Yes, the 'Flip4Mac' works well. Also, try 'right clicking' on the attachment, then 'left click' on 'open attachment'. This way you can view Microsoft PowerPoint attachments. Good choice, the Powerbook G4. I've had mine for 6 years with no problems. Using Leopard.

Or try right clicking on the attachment logo, then left click on "quick look attachment". Then you can see the Microsoft pps files that are attached.

Viewing PowerPoint

by chesshaus - 12/1/08 7:37 PM In reply to: Windows attachments on Mac by blurrier

Well, I guess it's time to get a mouse. I have been using the little pad that is standard on laptops. Have gotten used to it. Hope I don't have too much trouble finding a mouse for a Mac.

No problem

Any USB mouse will do.

However, you did know that you can right click by holding down the Control key and pressing the trackpad button.
