Logs off immediatly after logging on

by Oracla - 11/21/08 10:49 AM

Hi all, i'm using a Dell inspiron 6400 laptop, windows XP.

Can anyone help me out?

The Problem:

-I turn my laptop on
-I get to the screen where you choose a user
-Whatever user i choose, it goes to log on and then immediatly logs off and goes back to the user screen.

How can i fix this?

Sorry if i've missed off any info needed to help on this

Thanks in advance for any pointers :)

Then you have a problem.

Get your XP CD and try a repair install. Success not guaranteed at all, but worth a try.

The next step is a clean install, erasing the full contents of the hard disk. I think the chances for having to do that exceed 50%.

No CD

Ok. My laptop came with no CD, just XP already installed. Do do a system restore, i'd have to log on, bummer!

Maybe if i take it to a PC store they could do something?

Good news!

Dell is still shipping out restore CDs for many of those machines. It's much cheaper to order that than take it to a store.

Dig just a little deeper.

I offered a link to some advice I sent out a few years ago. It seems you didn't follow the link or you might have asked a new question.

If you can't use that advice I strongly suggest you remove the hard disk and put in a new hard disk to reload the machine. The old hard disk is then fitted into some external USB case and you copy your files back later.

Hope this helps,
Bob

I've just managed to get my laptop to start up in diagnostic mode, by pressing and holding the 'function' key before i turn the pc on. It's still testing as i write this but so far it's highlighted a problem with the hard drive. Hopefully it'll give details of the problem, which might be able to be resolved.

Thanks for your help
:)

Just had a similar problem, only mine stayed on for 30 minutes before shutting down. All that was needed was to clean out the cooling fan and filter and hey presto back to normal,my laptop is only 3 months old.
