Same!

by chezno - 11/21/08 10:28 PM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The same thing happens to me, only it freezes for about 10 seconds, then the screen gets all messed up and I have to restart the computer manually. I'm running a comp I built, with XP Pro SP3, 2gb RAM, 500gb harddrive with 367gb left, and AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ dual-core processor. Odd...

Windows XP freezing

by digish777 - 11/21/08 10:41 PM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi,

YOu have two protection tools. Once of which is PC Tools which is not a standard software. I kindly recommend you to uninstall that one. Mcaffee has this habit of giving freezing habit on windows. I have not found this to be harmful or something. It is just the habit of it.

In my case the free wont lat for long. Normally 3 Second may be. I am not much sure about this option. Best would be Switch to Kaspersky or Norton. Kaspersky is going to kill you processor speed. It is going to give load. Norton claims to be giving less load. Norton is costlier in my place. So I could not play around and test. But once I had used for trial. I dont remember it giving any freeze.

Hope this opinion helps you.

hi,
the problem in this situation 75% to 85% cause the DDR memories if they r 2 pcs. maybe NOT compatible together, so u have to remove 1gb and try only 1 ,,, and try the other DDR .
if the computer works perfect, that mean u have to buy new DDR compatible with the other .

Freezing XP

by Kevin Foot - 11/21/08 10:55 PM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Same problem with a brand new notebook.
The supplier swopped HDD, did Bios upgrades and replaced a mother board. No luck!
Then decided to look at my ram...got 2x1gig modules.
They were from different manufacturers!
Replaced one with a a mododule from the same manufacturer...hey presto. No more problems.
If the ram modules are not compatible, you have a problem.
Hope this helps.

When XP Randomly Freezes

by giaimo13 - 11/21/08 11:06 PM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi There!

I am a Dell-certified technician with 20 years experience in all facets of IT. In my experience, particularly where Dell laptops are concerned, the most important first step you must take in troubleshooting an issue, be it with XP, Windows 2000, or even Linux, is to run Dell System Diagnostics. These invaluable utilities can be accessed in one of two ways: When you see the Dell logo on your machine after a hard shutdown and a power-up, press the F12 key, and choose "Dell System Diagnostics" from the resulting menu that pops up - and don't worry, your data is safe as all the Dell tests are non-destructive. Run the "quick" test first - which should complete in under 10 minutes time, unless a problem is found, in which case you can get the unit serviced or, if you are the kind that is more IT-curious, run the "Expanded" tests, which generally will give you more information than you could ever want about a failed component.

Should the diagnotics run to completion, you may be reasonably assured that the hardware that shipped with your system is all in working order, so further detective work is in order. First, check the Dell website and search for and download any updated hardware drivers that apply to your system - often that will include drivers for power management and many of the Windows Ghosts that haunt these laptops are rooted in power problems. After applying hardware updates, ALWAYS reboot your laptop to give the system a chance to go through POST (power-on self-test) before tryiing to induce new code into an older device. Once the system boots up, launch WIndows XP by logging in and see if the system behaves. If so - good on you! If not, back to the web, but this time, to Microsoft's Windows Update website, where you need to SKIP the Standard or Automatic Update and go straight to the A La Carte side of the menu. Check the boxes that allow you to search for and choose updates on your own, and then seek out those that apply to your working habits (i.e., if you're an Excel junkie and usually are running Excel with trouble brews and then boils over, select an Excel update). Select as many of these updates as you feel comfortable with - your Dell will not let you install any that do not apply to your system. Then, kick the whole thing off, mic yourself a limincello over ice in a nice cocktail glass, and let the internet do it's stuff. Reboot when prompted, fetch another cocktail, and then check to see if your newfound IT mojo has solved your problem. If yes, you're done! If no, well, better mix up a pitcher of those limoncellos, because your next step is to call Dell Telephone Support. The bad news is that you WILL wait on hold some, the GOOD news is that you already have a cocktail, and you've already DONE 99% of the pre-tests they would have stepped you through ANYWAY, so you are still ahead of the game.

Good luck - and congratulations for your perserverence where lesser mortals would have long ago called it quits and called in those noodleheads in the Volkswagens!

Wow/...

As an LPIC level II guy I find wht you're saying to be extremely well indoctrinated and well, an adequate, trained response. Most software based lockups are easier to fix with a cold boot, should that fail, than we attempt to boot to run level 1 in a real OS, or System Restore in XP...should that fail we go to the hardware mattresses, unplug the thing and pull the battery for a few seconds (10). XP (an NT based OS) can lock up with too many messages in the queue (clicking too much stuff) as Windoze apps although getting better at garbage collection thanks to .NET, they still ain't quite there.

I actually own a Dell machine E521 (AMD X2), which for over 1 year has served me faithfully as a home entertainment center, it has a Hauppauge PVR-150, SoundBlaster Xtreme and an Nvidia 8500 GT graphics card, so along with a Creative digital IO module, it drives everything. At not one time have I let Dell do anything to it, which may be a reason for it's continued functioning.

I do run Ubuntu on it, as I am really fascinated by this Linux distro, which more than many other distros, seems to be at home for home applications, with some really great repositories. As a long time Redhat person, I was really suprised at how well it works.

A thorough clean-up for a freezing laptop.

by alfonsdebruyn - 11/21/08 11:06 PM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Most probably your laptop needs a thorough clean-up. Run CCleaner, available on the site below. It's free and it does the job it promises.
They also have a free "Defraggler". Run it when the clean-up is completed.

check your cooling fan

by kiwatule_wed - 11/21/08 11:36 PM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I think you should check out your cooling fan. It may not be moving thus the machines heats up and the processor heats up, it therefore freezes.

It sounds like you are running two AV programmes, these will fight each other as happened on my PC. I just shut one down and uninstelled same, recommend you keep the McAfee and ditch the other.

CPU Overheating

by Phoenix System - 11/22/08 12:35 AM In reply to: Windows XP system just randomly freezes, what’s causing this? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This Problem is very common among both desktops and laptops when they get a little old or when they're in an unsuitable environment, but usually the solution isn't hard

When the CPU heats up to a dangerous level it freezes processing to avoid damage to the CPU or the motherboard, this usually happen because of dust piling up on the fans, but in laptops it's more usual for the problem to happen because of bad cooling, make sure the laptop isn't in a tightly closed area and check to see if the fans are being blocked by any objects, like when you use the laptop on a mellow surface, like a bed or a mattress, if you find none of that you can be sure that the problem is internal, but still cooling-related, the laptop will probably need cleaning from the inside, which you might want to send the laptop to it's vendor to do, or you can call them for instructions, that depends on your confidence in dealing with such devices .

Laptop freezing up

I would go with only one virus tool. The one you feel gives you the best protection. Personally I use AVG.
