Firefox 3, with all the addon's is the best browser yet. Awesome is the verdict.

Blecch!

by kaetheone - 11/14/08 4:50 PM In reply to: What's The Verdict on Firefox 3.0? by Syrinx77

I must say, I absolutely hate firefox 3.

Not only doesn't it seem any faster, at least on my computer, which is relatively new, but--hellooooo!- if I want to see my bookmarks, I go to the little button that says "bookmarks." Having to read my way through them every time I want to use my address bar is a major pain.

Enough so that, since my firefox 2.0 versions are suddenly incompatible with half the websites I want to get into (I can't even get it to open my gmail account anymore, for god's sake!), I am looking for a different browser to play with.

I've appreciated firefox immensely in the past--but they changed some things that really didn't need "fixing", and they lost me as a result.

Anyone got some suggestions for a good, secure browser that isn't IE? Or has IE improved enough that it's now more or less safe to use and won't drive you crazy with waiting for your chosen site to come up?

Two things...

1.) You can block the bookmark results from being returned in the Awesomebar by using the extension Hide Unvisited (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7429).

2.) There is no sudden incompatibility between Firefox 2.x and most websites. Firefox 2.x will not be supported much longer, placing you at risk due to the lack of security updates, but it is still fully functional. The issue you're describing is likely caused by a malfunctioning extension or a corrupt Firefox profile. Try running Firefox Safe Mode (Start->Run and type firefox.exe -safe-mode) and see the sticky at the top of the forum regarding corrupt profiles.

P.S. If you still want an alternative, both Opera and Safari are viable, while Google's Chrome is working through the early beta growing period.

I'll give it a try...

Hi, John,

Thanks for the suggestions. I looked around for a way to get rid of the bookmark thing both times I downloaded 3, but, not being any kind of expert (though I can mumble around with the thing well enough, given a bit of time), I got irritated enough where I finally just said "the heck with it."

I've been deleting and re-downloading firefox 2.0.0.14 for the last week or two because it lets me into my email, etc., without the eternal wait. But, in addition to periodically and suddenly kicking me off the net--or saying that firefox closed unexpectedly when I intentionally closed it--it keeps updating to 2.0.018, which promptly freezes me out. I guess the malfunctioning extension you mentioned is causing that, huh?

At the moment, I'm giving Safari a go. It seems to download desired pages substantially faster than firefox, but I haven't heard a lot about its security, good or bad, so it's definitely a "wait and see" process.

Again, thanks for the suggestions. I'll try firefox 3 out again, then make a decision about whether it or Safari will ultimately be our main browser.

Safari's not bad...

But it doesn't have the extensive extension support that Firefox does. As to security, it is generally considered better than Internet Explorer, but Apple has had its share of public criticism for saying some security related decisions were features rather than bugs while attempting to hide the existence of others. Statistically, Opera has had the fewest security flaws, but if you're careful about which sites you visit and keep your security software updated, with regular scans, it is not an overwhelming concern.

Gmail issues using Firefox

by UKposter - 11/16/08 9:27 AM In reply to: Blecch! by kaetheone

I too have had issues with trying to get Gmail, as well as chat within it, to open fully while using FF. Reading other forums we're far from being alone in finding this type of problem. If I click on the basic HTML view link at the bottom of the fully loaded Gmail page, or whilst Gmail is loading immeadiately after signing in, most of what I want to do with Gmail is accessable and works OK while using it in HTML form.

There is some help with Gmail issues of this nature and more here

If there are any conspiracy fans here, have you heard anything about the idea that the real source of these issues has more to do with the launch of Chrome coinciding with these issues kicking off?

No Conspiracies

by timwerx - 11/17/08 1:54 AM In reply to: Gmail issues using Firefox by UKposter

I've used (and use every day) Gmail in Firefox with no problems. I even tried Chrome, then uninstalled it, and continue using Firefox for Gmail and everything else. No problems.

I hope you can find a fix.

The fix may have been delivered by google.

by UKposter - 11/21/08 1:25 AM In reply to: No Conspiracies by timwerx

Thanks, I think the solution may well have turned up.

Gmail has had a redesign and there are new options regarding themes and labels amongst others.

Opening Gmail in Firefox 3.04 today it all worked as it used to for me earlier this year. I can alter settings, delete spam and so on that I'd had issues with recently, both before and since I updated to FF 3.04 from FF 3.03, all without having to resort to the HTML version of Gmail. I hope it's not just a temporary improvement for me and that the issues are now resolved for all. Apart from the obvious cosmetic and settings changes there may well have been tinkering behind the scenes too, it seems.

I tried it,...

by Paul C - 11/16/08 2:46 AM In reply to: What's The Verdict on Firefox 3.0? by Syrinx77

...but couldn't get my bookmarks transferred to FF3 (and yes, I tried the workaround that was on the FF website).

Has this issue been fixed?

Post 25 of 25

To my knowledge there is no known issue...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 11/16/08 8:22 AM In reply to: I tried it,... by Paul C

There can be a glitch now and then with any feature, but automatic recognition of the bookmarks.html file in the Firefox Profile directory as well as import through the Organize Bookmarks menu are not, to my knowledge, known to be faulty, and no 'fix' has been issued for such.
