Last Hard Drive Fate

by rosie82 - 11/15/08 3:20 PM In reply to: Poll: What did you do with your last old hard drive? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I took it out of the computer, and proceeded to disfigure it with a heavy hammer. Then put it in the trash.

Destroyed it

by Travis Ernst - 11/15/08 11:07 PM In reply to: Poll: What did you do with your last old hard drive? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Target shooting on the farm did great damage with the handgun. No way in heck the platters would ever be recovered.

I'm a RE-user!

by TrackStar1682 - 11/15/08 11:35 PM In reply to: Poll: What did you do with your last old hard drive? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

When my old HP's hard drive was upgraded, it sat idle until I popped it into a friend's PC. It was an upgrade from 3 GB to 30, so it worked out very well.

When the HP finally kicked the bucket, I took out the new(er) 120 GB drive and put it into a drive enclosure and used it externally. The drive is still good, the enclosure, shot. So now it's just sitting around until I get another enclosure.

Cloned my new drive to it . . .

The ultimate backup. Re-clone about once a month.

Submerged

by blurrier - 11/16/08 2:57 PM In reply to: Poll: What did you do with your last old hard drive? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I pitched my old hard drive into a recycling dumpster behind a restaurant that contained hundreds of gallons of old vegetable oil, grease and whatnot!

Wipe or destroy

by pllam - 11/17/08 5:24 AM In reply to: Poll: What did you do with your last old hard drive? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I use a wiping util (that really works) or physically destroy the platters one by one. Never give someone, sell or otherwise transfer a HD to anyone without wiping it. I use PDWipe myself.

Extracting the cool stuff

by winsleuth - 11/17/08 11:06 AM In reply to: Poll: What did you do with your last old hard drive? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I take them all apart and recover the awesomely powerful magnets of course. Put them to all kinds of uses, good uses of course. Otherwise they charge good money for these at several sites on the net.

lying idle

by Bipin Desai - 11/18/08 5:46 PM In reply to: Poll: What did you do with your last old hard drive? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have five hard drives which are lying idle. One of the reasons is i cannot use them. My system is not able to recognize them. In fact I want to use them , my old data is valuable, how to retrive it?

I can't throw anything away

by boris010666 - 11/19/08 7:31 AM In reply to: Poll: What did you do with your last old hard drive? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I keep almost everything, including old HHD's. I use them for extra storage, and building 'refurbished' dinosaur pc's(win98, etc.). About the only thing I do toss is chassis and motherboards(after I've stripped them).

(NT) Just reformatting my HD. It's getting too slow.
