SHOULD I DISABLE...UAC: "USER ACCOUNT CONTROL" ???

by dew drinker - 11/14/08 5:23 PM

this problem arose from my transfer of files from XP-->Vista. I now have two of the document folders..."MY DOCUMENTS" and
just "DOCUMENTS", (also two of "Pictures" and so on...) It won't let me in to one of the doc. folders, and I draged and droped or deleted the others. It's the doc.'s stuff that gives me heartburn...I get the window that says "you don't have permisson" and trying to tweak the UAC to "Allow Everyone" (I am the ONLY user of this PC) It still won't let me in. My main concern is...if I disable the UAC, are there any security risks? or any other concerns I should loose patience over? thanks for reading

There are

There are a few additional security concerns with UAC off. For one, it disables IE's protected mode operation, but you shouldn't be using IE in the first place from a security standpoint, so that's pretty much moot.

But the whole point of UAC is to make you stop and think, "Do I really want to do this?" OF course it ends up just desensitizing most people into just hitting the "Yes" button to anything that pops up without even reading it. If used correctly however, it is an additional protection layer. It may be a rather thin one, but it's an additional layer none the less.

Most likely will not resolve the issue...

Rather, you will need to take ownership of all files in the folder and all subfolders. This is because the true owner is the account on the old XP machine, not the account on the Vista machine, even if you gave both the same name.

Hope this helps,
John

if you do alot of administrative work, yes it would be better to turn off UAC.

I personally find no need for it

Don't just disable - uninstall !!!!

There is absolutely no improved security provided by UAC. UAC does not send a "scout" to your requested website and come back and tell you that the site you have requested to go might be a bad place, or anything like that. It only reads a series of keystrokes and throws up a message box asking if you want to go where you just said you want to go, ..... two and sometimes three times. If you hadn't wanted to go there to start with, you would not have selected to do so -- DUH! UAC is nothing but a totally useless frustration placed into a very frustrating operating system for reasons unknown and never adequately explained by the people who hatched this monster that became Vista.

1. i don't think UAC can be uninstalled from vista (unless it has been cracked and modified)
2. Microsoft said that UAC was designed to be annoying
