Western Digital: The Easiest Way To Erase Drives!

by Henry Michael Karshis - 11/15/08 6:36 AM In reply to: Donating hard drives, how do I get rid of all my personal data? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

If you want to make sure that no one (not even you!) will ever see your data again, just use a Western Digital Drive! I've lost all my music and info from 2, that's right, 2 500GB Drives from Western Digital My Book Pro Drives by simply following the daisy-chain directions on their web site - in no time at all, all my data was gone forever!

Read about the other 430+ people that effortlessly wiped their drives: http://www.tomrafteryit.net/western-digital-my-book-pro-edition-ii-sucks

If you really want to preserve your stuff, forget the cheap drives, spend 10 % and go to Other World Computing - it's worked for me.

donating hard drives and getting rid of personal data.

by Fuller42 - 11/15/08 7:34 AM In reply to: Donating hard drives, how do I get rid of all my personal data? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have donated old computers to schools and friends. They have been all happy to received them. Before I pass them on, I have reformated the hard drives and reinstalled a fresh operating system and fresh programs on it. Hope this helps.

hard drives

by angler2--2008 - 11/15/08 11:53 AM In reply to: Donating hard drives, how do I get rid of all my personal data? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi ...I assume you are referring to smaller drives. I build and repair computers,so I end up with many smaller hard drives. Rather than going through with what was mentioned,I hit them with a hammer and sell for scrap. Just another alternative. Although if your hard drives are the 200/300 gig variety,I would gladly accept.

www.dban.org DBAN Is As Safe As You Need!

by FNEWKIR - 11/15/08 5:57 PM In reply to: Donating hard drives, how do I get rid of all my personal data? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

www.dban.org has DBAN or a.k.a. Darik's Boot And Nuke | Hard Drive Disk Wipe. As an I.T. Administrator in a global automotive enterprise I worry about proprietary data leaving the company walls at any time, I have tested this product, and it passes all my test. One of the downsides is that it wipes it so fast and so clean there is 0.00% chance of any data recovery UNLESS you are a government agency. I have ran the software, and then used a suite of products to attempt recovery and have never been able to get even so much as a 1kb of data back. This is the best free disk wipe utility I have ever used, and I have tested plenty.

Thank You To All Of You

by The Queen B - 11/16/08 5:03 PM In reply to: Donating hard drives, how do I get rid of all my personal data? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Wow, I never expected so many options and so many responses! I cannot thank everyone enough! I am still reading the responses and take in all this great information, then when I finish absorbing it all...well, I'm going to have to make some decisions! At least now when I donate the drives I'll feel secure that my personal info is gone, and it will be great to know that others can use them instead of them being heaped into some landfill! Thanks again everybody!!!

WIPE A DRIVE CLEAN

by STEVERI - 11/18/08 1:52 PM In reply to: Donating hard drives, how do I get rid of all my personal data? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I think I would plug the drive into my computer using cable select as a master, unplug any other drives, then insert the windows cdrom, set computer to boot from the Windows cdrom, then when Windows asks me what to do, select quick reformat the drive, takes a couple of minutes. The same thing I usually do if I reinstall Windows on a new hard drive, I have a 1982 computer I keep alive by installing a new C: drive every year or 2.

Data Erasure

by crusa27 - 11/19/08 5:35 PM In reply to: Donating hard drives, how do I get rid of all my personal data? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

One way to erase these disks is with a Dept. of Defense Spec 3 Equivalent software package. Simple applications you can download for free are not sufficient. Eban and Blancco are two companies that offer sufficient packages. In addition to erasing the hard drives, make sure you check for any floppys or CD's that might have been left in the systems. If you need any further information on this you can email me at Brian@ComputerRecyclingUSA.com and I can put you in touch with the person at our company that actually performs these activities.

Best of luck,

donating Hard drives?

by YeYe55 - 11/24/08 7:05 AM In reply to: Donating hard drives, how do I get rid of all my personal data? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Donating Hard Drives???? hmmmmm
The best way to donate a hard drive(s) is by simply getting a copy of killDisk. What killdisk does is it erases the hard drive completely where it would be totally impossible for anyone to access it.
If you don't trust no one, I strongly recommend or suggest, destroying it altogether.

Different way

by ArnobGupta - 12/20/08 12:40 AM In reply to: Donating hard drives, how do I get rid of all my personal data? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

1) Format
2) Load the most boring movie you can find onto it several times until it gets filled.
3) Repeat
